Sammie, a budding naturalist, knows of a secret and wonderful place: Winghaven, an abandoned lot in the middle of the suburbs where wildlife flourishes. She spends hours making notes and drawings in her meticulous field journal. When Bram, a new boy, turns up with his camera, Sammie worries he’ll give away her hidden haven—after all, the other boys at school bully her. But Bram is a scientist like Sammie, and together they observe tiny pond creatures, a pileated woodpecker with a red crest like a pirate’s bandana, and thriving monarch butterflies whose habitats are becoming scarce. When Sammie and Bram discover bright flagging tape encircling the trees, they learn Winghaven is in danger from a local developer—and it’s going to take courage, spirit, and science to save it. This beautifully written story, full of details about the natural world, includes Sammie’s field illustrations as well as real-life notes on keeping a nature journal, studying monarchs, and bird-watching.

During the Civil War, armies took many soldiers captive, but they also captured some civilians as well, such as sutlers, nurses, teamsters, and other service personnel. In addition, both the Union and the Confederacy imprisoned deserters, sympathizers with the enemy, traitors, and draft dodgers. The numbers cited vary somewhat, and often, precise numbers should be regarded with caution because the official numbers do not account for everyone. One somewhat authoritative total is that Confederates confined 7,092 Union officers and 179,091 enlisted men in prison camps, along with 1,962 civilians, for a total of 188,145 (Stack 3). By comparison, the Union captured 35,782 officers, 426,852 enlisted men, and 13,535 Confederate civilians, but this total is misleading because it includes the troops that surrendered when the war ended, including the commands of Robert E. Lee, Joseph E. Johnston, Richard Taylor, and Edmund Kirby Smith. Almost all the troops who surrendered at the end of the war were immediately paroled and allowed to go home. A commonly cited estimate is that 215,000 Confederate and 195,000 Union soldiers were prisoners of war in one of the various prison camp facilities. There were 32 sizable Confederate camps during the war, half of them in South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama.
Of the Union prisoners, 2,696 escaped from prison, and 3,170 others joined the Confederate armies. Of the Confederates, 2,098 escaped, and 5,432 joined the Union forces. 94,000 Union troops were paroled, and 248,599 Confederates were also released on parole (Stack 4).That said, the number of escapees cited are best regarded as estimates rather than exact totals - record-keeping was accurate in some places and inaccurate in others, and as the Confederacy was in its last months, chaotic conditions prevailed.

Wherever there is injustice, nefarious plots, or threats to society, the Sheep, the Rooster, and the Duck are there to stop them!
A sly villain with a plan to cause havoc across the globe is no match for three extraordinary animals—and their two young human friends. From acclaimed author and artist Matt Phelan, The Sheep, the Rooster, and the Duck is a hilarious and action-packed middle grade adventure perfect for fans of Skunk and Badger and Flora & Ulysses.
The very first passengers to ride in a hot-air balloon were a sheep, a rooster, and a duck in 1783. And while hot-air balloons are indeed wondrous, ten-year-old Emile is too busy being the fastidious caretaker of ambassador Benjamin Franklin’s château in Paris to think much about them.
But soon, young Emile finds himself right in the middle of a sinister plot. And right in the middle of the secret headquarters for France’s undercover guardians—the very same sheep, rooster, and duck that piloted the first hot-air balloon. If Emile can muster his courage and be bold, he may be the key to helping the heroes save both Benjamin Franklin and the world.
Award-winning author Matt Phelan’s The Sheep, the Rooster, and the Duck is an adventure full of secrets, hijinks, and reimagined historical events. This rip-roaring and surprising story is ideal for reluctant readers, aspiring heroes, and fans of Peter Brown’s The Wild Robot.
