Through a richly detailed narrative, Fitzgerald delves into Forster's profound impact on literature, particularly through his celebrated biography of Charles Dickens. The book adopts a biographical and critical style, intertwining personal anecdotes with historical context, illustrating Forster's place within the literary canon of the 19th century. Fitzgerald's prose captures the intricate complexities of Forster's character, illustrating how his own experiences shaped his critical perspective and approach to biographical work. Percy Fitzgerald, a contemporary of Forster, was himself a writer, critic, and an astute observer of Victorian social mores. His deep interest in literature and biography, coupled with his engagement in the literary circles of his time, enabled him to present a discerning portrayal of Forster. Fitzgerald's familiarity with Forster's milieu, enhanced by his expansive knowledge of literary culture, provides readers with invaluable insights into the pressures and inspirations that defined Forster's life and oeuvre. "For years my life had been a string of temporary work in factories and call centres or unemployed. Approaching 30 and disillusioned with life in Glasgow, I sold everything I had and left for a new life in a remote fishing village in Japan. I knew nothing of the language or the strange new land that I would call home for the next seven years. Fish Town is an eye-opening true story that paints the reality of living in Japan as an outsider."
John's debut memoir, written entirely on his phone, reads like a book of poetry or perhaps a long text message. This gifted writer captures the experience of a Scottish man living in Japan – with humour, wit, honesty, and by all means without an ounce of political correctness.
"Periods of hopelessness and despair are perfectly blended with hilarity and hope, instantly giving off vibes of Post Office by Charles Bukowski. Fagan's delivery is poignant and purposeful, with writing so crisp it's easy to fly through the pages. Truly a book I will never forget." – Aidan Martin, author of Euphoric Recall

Carthage was one of the great ancient civilizations, and at its peak, the wealthy Carthaginian empire dominated the Mediterranean against the likes of Greece and Rome, with commercial enterprises and influence stretching from Spain to Turkey. In fact, at several points in history it had a very real chance of replacing the fledgling Roman empire or the failing Greek poleis (city-states) altogether as master of the Mediterranean. Although Carthage by far preferred to exert economic pressure and influence before resorting to direct military power (and even went so far as to rely primarily on mercenary armies paid with its vast wealth for much of its history, it nonetheless produced a number of outstanding generals, from the likes of Hanno Magnus to, of course, the great bogeyman of Roman nightmares himself: Hannibal.
Certain foreign policy decisions led to continuing enmity between Carthage and the burgeoning power of Rome, and what followed was a series of wars which turned from a battle for Mediterranean hegemony into an all-out struggle for survival. Although the Romans gained the upper hand in the wake of the First Punic War, the Carthaginians brought the Romans to their knees for over a decade during the Second Punic War. Of course, they were led in Italy by the legendary Hannibal Barca, who maintained his army near Rome for nearly 15 years, but never attempted to march on Rome.
One overlooked figure in the Punic Wars is Hamilcar Barca, who is now best remembered for being Hannibal’s father. However, before Hannibal marched out of Spain, it was Hamilcar who had positioned forces there, and he was already a significant historical figure in his own right. Indeed, had it not been for his death, his legacy likely would have been more important than that of his illustrious son, who is now remembered as one of history’s greatest generals.

In less than six hours in August 1942, nearly 1,000 British, Canadian, and American commandos died in the French port of Dieppe in an operation that, for decades, seemed to have no real purpose. Was it a dry-run for D-Day, or perhaps a gesture by the Allies to placate Stalin’s impatience for a second front in the west? Canadian historian David O’Keefe uses hitherto classified intelligence archives to prove that this catastrophic and apparently futile raid was, in fact, a mission set up by Ian Fleming of British Naval Intelligence as part of a “pinch” policy designed to capture material relating to the four-rotor Enigma Machine that would permit codebreakers like Alan Turing at Bletchley Park to turn the tide of the Second World War.
