Synopsis

"Life is a Dream" (La vida es sueño) by Pedro Calderón de la Barca is a masterpiece of Spanish Golden Age theater. Written in the 17th century, it's a philosophical and allegorical play that delves into themes of fate, free will, and the nature of reality. The story revolves around Segismundo, a prince who has been imprisoned since birth due to a prophecy. The prophecy predicts that Segismundo will become a tyrant if he is ever given power. Throughout the play, the audience is taken on a journey that questions the true nature of life and whether our experiences are real or merely fleeting dreams.

Calderón de la Barca weaves a rich tapestry of existential questions, blurring the lines between the conscious and unconscious, reality and illusion. Segismundo's journey, from captivity to power and back, is a metaphor for the human experience — a dream that we grapple with, often uncertain if what we perceive is genuine or a construct of our minds. The philosophical undertones of the play challenge us to contemplate the complexities of life and the human psyche.

In 'Life is a Dream,' Calderón de la Barca provides a thought-provoking exploration of the human condition, leaving the audience pondering the duality of existence and the enigmatic realms of dreams and reality. The play remains a timeless work, compelling us to reflect on the fundamental questions that have intrigued humanity for centuries.

A Gateway Has Opened is a poetry collection by Hong Kong-based poet, LIAM BLACKFORD, containing 36 missives on truth and reality, anger and rage, complexity and change, and power as manifested in people, corporations, governments, borders and cultures. The poems inhabit a chaotic and psychedelic world where water flows into the sky, nightclubs have hundreds of floors and where banks and malls publish theories on knowledge and personhood. Therein, human society is fraught with harm and violence but also euphoric with the widening horizons of possibility. The collection is notable for its strict adherence to a unique poetic form (each poem has six stanzas, each stanza with six lines, and each line with six syllables), which in its red-eyed absoluteness suggests that the poems are giving voice to an alien, an angel or a machine. Though avant-garde and philosophical, the collection is highly reflective of the poet’s place and time, in which Hong Kong is at the epicentre of epochal political and cultural change.
“The poems ... ‘quiver with tension’ as the speaker straddles the liminal space between dreams and the mundane.” —Ryan Fenton. “In Blackford’s verse, one is in our world, with its political and environmental anxieties, with its affluence and parallel unease.”―Andrew S. Guthrie, Proverse Prize Finalist 2013. “... what bubbles beneath the surface is the courage to find astounding beauty and inspiration amidst confounding and cruelty, and hold them both.” —Jack Mayer, Winner of the Proverse Prize 2019. “...unique explorations of poetic form.”—Philip Mead, Emeritus Professor, University of Western Australia.  “Blackford’s worlds are jarring and harsh; psychedelic yet pungent with our reality. His strict form is muscular and fascinating. Gateway seethes with energy – I loved it.”―David West, Western Australia.

I am 27 and have never killed a man
but I know the face of death as if heirloom
my country memorizes murder as lullaby
    from "For Fahd"

Textured with the sights and sounds of growing up in East New York in the nineties, to school on the South Side of Chicago, all the way to the olive groves of Palestine, My Mother Is a Freedom Fighter is Aja Monet's ode to mothers, daughters, and sisters—the tiny gods who fight to change the world. Complemented by striking cover art from Carrie Mae Weems, these stunning poems tackle racism, sexism, genocide, displacement, heartbreak, and grief, but also love, motherhood, spirituality, and Black joy.

At the first utterance I heard that rare something that said this is special and knew immediately that Aja Monet was one of the Ones who will mark the sound of the ages. She brings depth of voice to the voiceless, and through her we sing a powerful song." —Carrie Mae Weems

Of Cuban-Jamaican descent, Aja Monet is an internationally established poet, performer, singer, songwriter, educator, and human rights advocate. Monet is also the youngest person to win the legendary Nuyorican Poet’s Café Grand Slam title.

This audio edition includes FLORIDA WATER: POEMS

Florida Water is a collection of poems that, like the cleansing waters of spiritual baths, rinse, reflect, and reveal the raw truths that lie within. In this vulnerable meditation, aja monet reflects on her migration to South Florida in search of love, connection, and belonging, unearthing the delicate balance between the poet, lover, and community organizer. These poems lay bare the tender dance of relationships, entwining the personal with the political, as they confront the state's fractured history of racial prejudice, marooned peoples, and the unruly forces of nature. In Florida Water, each poem is an artifact and offering from her time spent wading through the rising tides of climate change, heartbreak, and systemic violence. With each line, monet immerses us deeper into the water, where the currents of memory, struggle, and survival pull us toward both despair and hope.

Move from a transactional experience with God to a transformational friendship with Him through prayer. How can time with God be a source of peace in a loud and distracting world? In Beholding, spiritual director and poet Strahan Coleman invites readers to discover the joy of being with God, not just working for Him. As they inhabit the art of resting in God’s presence, prayer becomes not only a place of seeking, but becoming. Beholding calls Christians to understand how:  Prayer is so much more than spoken conversation between us and God; it’s a way of existing together. Beholding God in prayer is profoundly connected to beholding and dignifying others.Embracing prayer practices from different Christian traditions digs a deep well of peace in the soul. Our everyday ordinary lives can become the meeting place for God through silence, solitude, community, creation, and hospitality.
