Beschreibung

When St. Dominic founded the Order of Preachers in the thirteenth century, it was to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. Today, given the ever-widening gap between Christian tradition and secular culture, this task remains as relevant as ever—not only for the Dominicans but for every baptized Christian. Who will have the courage to go out into this gap and witness to the power of God’s love?   In Preachers at Prayer: Soundings in the Dominican Spiritual Tradition, priest and scholar Paul Murray presents four talks on the subjects of prayer, study, and preaching, highlighting the deep interconnectedness of all three aspects in the life of the preacher. Drawing on the timeless wisdom of the masters of the Dominican tradition, he demonstrates how conversion begins first in the soul of the evangelist, spreading outward from a heart on fire.

“Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.” (Mark 5:19)Original title: Miracles and Parables of Our Lord.Volume 6A deep, inspiring, and often challenging study of the Lord Jesus Christ's miracles and parables.Men who were led by the hand or groped their way along the wall to reach Jesus were touched by his finger and went home without a guide, rejoicing that Jesus Christ had opened their eyes. Jesus is still able to perform such miracles. And, with the power of the Holy Spirit, his Word will be expounded and we’ll watch for the signs to follow, expecting to see them at once. Why shouldn’t those who read this be blessed with the light of heaven? This is my heart's inmost desire.I can’t put fine words together. I’ve never studied speech. In fact, my heart loathes the very thought of intentionally speaking with fine words when souls are in danger of eternal punishment. No, I work to speak straight to your hearts and consciences, and if there is anyone with faith to receive, God will bless them with fresh revelation.– Charles H. SpurgeonIn this sixth volume, Charles H. Spurgeon expounds on the deliverance of the demon-possessed man from the region of the Gerasenes, the forgiveness and healing of the paralytic man let down through the roof by his friends, and the woman with an issue of blood healed by touching the hem of Jesus' garment.

Despite the fact some Neolithic communities grew to considerable sizes, they’re typically not considered when people think of the first ancient civilizations or the first major cities, so when German archaeologists discovered the archaeological site of Göbekli Tepe in southeastern Turkey in the 1990s, it created an academic firestorm that is still raging. Far from being just another settlement, Göbekli Tepe has been described as the world’s first temple and perhaps one of the locations where human civilization began. Subsequent archaeological work at Göbekli Tepe has revealed that the site was a spiritual center for the local population during a time when humans were undergoing a transition as hunter-gatherers in the Paleolithic Period to a more sedentary lifestyle in the Neolithic Period, more than 10,000 years ago. Further research in the disciplines of anthropology, religion, and history indicate that the activity at Göbekli Tepe subsequently set the tone for elements of Neolithic and Bronze Age religion and ideology in the Near East, especially in Anatolia (roughly equivalent with modern Turkey).
Likewise, archaeologists have been able to determine when Karahan Tepe was built, possibly how long it was occupied, and that it was probably related to the larger, better-known site of Göbekli Tepe, but several important questions remain. What was the purpose of Karahan Tepe? Was Karahan Tepe a permanent or semi-permanent settlement? What was the background of the people who built the site, and how long did it take them to build it?
Karahan Tepe was just one of many sites in ancient modern Turkey, and as part of a greater complex, Karahan Tepe represents one of the earliest known attempts to build a complex society, so understanding more about the site can tell historians about how the process worked.

Greg Lanier Presents a Simple Method for Studying Old Testament Citations in the New Testament
Many Bible readers have difficulty understanding the Old Testament's connection to the New Testament, and some even believe it's obsolete in light of God's new covenant. In reality, New Testament writers alluded to earlier books of the Bible roughly 300–400 times. The Old Testament isn't outdated; it's critical to understanding the rest of Scripture.
In Old Made New, Greg Lanier explains how New Testament authors used the Old Testament to communicate the gospel and present the person and work of Jesus. He also explains what the Old Testament teaches Christians today about the church's identity and ethics. Writing for a broad range of readers, Lanier distills thorough research into simple, descriptive examples and tips. His 3-step method explains how to identify and explore an Old Testament passage and see how it's "remixed" in the New Testament to thoughtfully engage with Scripture.
