Synopsis

In "The Heart of Happy Hollow," Paul Laurence Dunbar masterfully weaves a tapestry of African American life in the early 20th century. Through a series of interlinked character sketches and vivid narratives, Dunbar captures the joys, struggles, and community spirit of his fictional town. The work is imbued with a blend of dialect and standard English, creating a unique literary style that highlights the authenticity of his characters while reflecting the broader social context of post-Reconstruction America. This duality reveals Dunbar's poignant exploration of identity, resilience, and cultural heritage, addressing the complexities of African American existence during a time of societal transition. Paul Laurence Dunbar was a prolific poet and novelist, acclaimed as one of the first African American writers to gain national recognition. His own experiences as the son of former slaves greatly influenced his writing, inspiring a deep empathy for the characters he created. Dunbar's intimate understanding of both the joys and challenges of black life prompted him to provide readers with a multifaceted representation of his community that transcends mere stereotype. Readers seeking a profound and authentic portrayal of African American experiences will find "The Heart of Happy Hollow" to be an enriching and enlightening read. Dunbar invites us to reflect on the essence of happiness, love, and community, making it a timeless exploration of human emotion and cultural identity.

Arnold Bennett was born in 1867 in Hanley one of the six towns that formed the Potteries that later joined together to become Stoke on Trent; the area in which most of his works are located. For a short time he worked for his solicitor father before realising that to advance his life he would need to become his own man. Moving to London at twenty-one he obtained work as a solicitor’s clerk and gradually moved into a career of journalism. At the turn of the century he turned full time to writing and shortly thereafter in 1903 he moved to Paris and in 1908 published to great acclaim The Old Wives Tale. With this his reputation was set. Clayhanger and The Old Wives Tale are perhaps his greatest and most lauded novels.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
This novel is a humble tribute to the sublime and heartbreaking love between the Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani and his last muse, Jeanne Hébuterne. It traces the tender arc of their brief yet incandescent love story, beginning in 1917 when they first met, and ending in 1920 with their tragic and untimely deaths.
Modigliani, already frail from illness and weighed by poverty and artistic struggle, found in Jeanne not only a muse but a soul mirror—an echo of his pain, passion, and longing. Jeanne, young and gentle, was drawn to the fire and depth of the man whose eyes rarely painted pupils but always saw souls.
Their love—fraught with hardships, shadowed by illness, and sealed by death—was not of this world. And yet, it was in death that they were finally reunited: ten years after Jeanne’s suicide, her family allowed her to be buried beside Amedeo, completing the love story they began in life.
This story is not only about tragedy. It is about transcendence. It is about love so radiant, so all-consuming, it becomes eternal.
To all who have ever loved deeply, and lost deeply—this story is for you.

There is something about the number 3.

The Ancient Greeks believed 3 was the perfect number, and in China 3 has always been a lucky number, and they know a thing or two.

Most religions also have 3 this and 3 that and, of course, in these more modern times, three’s a crowd may be too many, except when it’s a ménage à trois. It seems good things usually come in threes.

Whatever history and culture says WE think 3, a hat-trick of stories, is a great number to explore themes and literary avenues that classic authors were so adept at creating.
