Sinopse

"[I'm] as broke as the ten commandments."
P. G. "Plum" Wodehouse knew a thing or two about the money-go-round; in 1938 he was the world's highest paid writer. At times, his financial affairs read like one of his own comic plots, as British and American tax inspectors chased him from pillar to post across two continents. Many of his characters are similarly afflicted: but whether they have too much or too little splosh in the old sock, they always seem to learn – in the funniest ways possible – that money is an excellent servant and a terrible master.
The fifth of Paul Kent's occasional essays on matters Wodehousean is packed with paupers and plutocrats, meritocrats and misers all mooching with Mammon. It most certainly is funny in this rich man's world!

If you’re a woman juggling work, family, and the daily chaos with a smile (or at least a solid cup of coffee), this book was written for YOU.
You know the drill—wake up to the alarm that sounds more like a battle cry, race through morning routines like you're training for a decathlon, and try to be everything to everyone before noon. Whether you're doing it in heels, sneakers, or fuzzy slippers, we’re all in the same whirlwind of motherhood, marriage, and meetings. It’s messy, it’s exhausting, and yes—sometimes magical.
This isn’t another book telling you how to “balance it all perfectly.” Newsflash: perfect doesn’t exist. This is a book about how to keep showing up with purpose, reclaim your sanity, and rediscover the powerful woman underneath the to-do lists. You may have misplaced your Superwoman hat somewhere between school drop-off and deadline #3, but trust me—it’s still there. And we’re about to find it.
Inside these pages, you’ll:Learn how intention is the ultimate superpower—one you already have, you just need to remember to use it.Reconnect with the part of you that’s more than just a calendar manager and carpool queen.Get real strategies (not fluff) for managing the chaos while still pursuing your dreams.Laugh, nod in agreement, and maybe even cry a little—because this journey isn’t easy, but it’s ours.
This book is a love letter to women who do the hard, holy, and often invisible work of holding it all together. It’s not just what worked for me—it’s a celebration of us. Of the women who rise, stumble, keep going, and shine anyway.
So if you’ve ever wondered, Can I have it all without losing myself?—the answer is YES. And this book is your reminder.
Sis, I got you. Now let’s go find your sunny side UP.

We Tell Ourselves Stories - Joan...

In this riveting cultural biography, New York Times film critic Alissa Wilkinson examines Joan Didion's influence through the lens of American mythmaking. As a young girl, Didion was infatuated with John Wayne and his on-screen bravado, and was fascinated by her California pioneer ancestry and the infamous Donner Party. The mythos that preoccupied her early years continued to influence her work as a magazine writer and film critic in New York, offering glimmers of the many stories Didion told herself that would come to unravel over the course of her career. But out west, show business beckoned.

We Tell Ourselves Stories eloquently traces Didion's journey from New York to her arrival in Hollywood as a screenwriter at the twilight of the old studio system. She spent much of her adult life deeply embroiled in the glitz and glamour of the Los Angeles elite, where she acutely observed—and denounced—how the nation's fears and dreams were sensationalized on screen. Meanwhile, she paid the bills writing movie scripts like A Star Is Born, while her books propelled her to celestial heights of fame.

Peering through a scrim of celluloid, Wilkinson incisively dissects the cinematic motifs and machinations that informed Didion's writing—and how her writing, ultimately, demonstrated Hollywood's addictive grasp on the American imagination.

The Grammar of Self - Collected...

In THE GRAMMAR OF SELF, George Watt presents a lifetime of memories, which seemingly move at random from decade to decade, from continent to continent, from cosmos to microcosm. It does have one central goal: to look at poetry as an attempt towards objectification of aspects of personal identity, as a means through which the self may be confronted, challenged and celebrated. But the volume of verse does more than that as it subscribes to a notion from Thomas Szasz about the self: it is “not something that one finds. It is something that one creates.” (T.S. Szasz, The Second Sin (New York: Anchor Press, 1973, p. 49.) This volume accepts that the poetic text, or multiples thereof, is one means through which a self finds articulation. This articulation is open-ended, chaotic, composed of innumerable experiential fragments that come from deed, time, place and person. The self in this volume is composed of psychic jigsaw pieces (single poems) each of which assert their right to placement, but which will never collate into a perfect picture. This volume of poetry is a collection of many of these pieces, which together present an incomplete movement towards Szaszian self-creation.

From the “Trail of Tears” to Wounded Knee and Little Bighorn, the narrative of American history is incomplete without the inclusion of the Native Americans that lived on the continent before European settlers arrived in the 16th and 17th centuries. Since the first contact between natives and settlers, tribes like the Sioux, Cherokee, and Navajo have both fascinated and perplexed outsiders with their history, language, and culture.
Though they are not as well known as tribes like the Sioux or Cherokee, the Creek are one of the oldest and most important Native American tribes in North America. With roots that tie them to the Ancient Moundbuilders, the Natchez were one of the most established groups in the Southeastern United States, and came to be known as one of the Five Civilized Tribes. It’s also believed that they were among the first natives encountered by Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto’s historic expedition in the mid-16th century.
Like various other indigenous groups, the Natchez quickly found themselves in conflict with European powers, most notably the French, who they engaged in a series of battles with during the early 18th century. The French decimated the tribe and led to the dispersal of their dwindling numbers, but the Natchez continue to occupy popular imaginations because of several unique features that make them stand out from other groups.
The ongoing fighting between white settlers, militias, Army units, and Native Americans not only bled into the War of 1812 but was one of the main causes of it. Many Americans chaffed at the fact that along the Northwestern frontier, the British in Canada were supporting Indian resistance to American settlement.

This is a rare recording of Dr. Peter Marshall (1902 – 1949), a Scottish-American preacher, and former pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, who twice served as Chaplain of the United States Senate. He is remembered most popularly from the biography, A Man Called Peter, and the film made from it.
