Synopsis

A man avenges his own murder in this award-winning, “dark and genuinely funny novel” of the bittersweet hereafter (Jacquelyn Mitchard, author of The Deep End of the Ocean).   College dropout, aspiring writer, and smalltime marijuana grower, Thumb Rivera is in a bind. Confined to his rural ranch house in the desolate Maine countryside, he can only watch as his former friends and housemates scheme behind his back, conspire to steal his girlfriend, and make inroads with a dangerous biker gang. It’s really no fun being dead.   Thumb is a stoner ghost forced to haunt his survivors and reflect on the circumstances that led to his unsolved murder. Luckily, he discovers a channel through which he can communicate with the living world: Ben, an amateur ghost hunter who’s convinced Fred Muttkowski, a failed novelist turned pig farmer, to fashion Thumb’s Ouija board conversations into an actual book.   Thumb wants two things: To solve and avenge the mystery of his own death, and to tell his story. That story, as told to Ben, then fictionalized by Fred, is American Ghost, a “clever, quirky, puzzling, disturbing, and truly original” tale of the afterlife, the ephemeral nature of this life, and a paean to lost souls—both living and dead (John Nichols, author of The Milagro Beanfield War).   Winner of the 2018 Maine Literary Award for Speculative Fiction, “American Ghost will haunt you long after you’ve turned the last page” (Paul Doiron, author of The Poacher’s Son).

This is the unabridged audio recording of M.R. James' excellent ghost story 'There Was a Man Dwelt by a Churchyard'. The author's stories were written with the purpose of being read aloud in the long tradition of spooky Christmas Eve tales. This highly-praised version, narrated by David Collings, is sure to scare and delight in equal measure.

Shortlisted for the International Booker Prize, Cursed Bunny is a genre-defying collection of short stories by Korean author Bora Chung. Blurring the lines between magical realism, horror, and science-fiction, Chung uses elements of the fantastic and surreal to address the very real horrors and cruelties of patriarchy and capitalism in modern society. Anton Hur's translation skilfully captures the way Chung's prose effortlessly glides from being terrifying to wryly humorous.
