Synopsis

We’re all lying in the gutter, but some of us are staring at the spaces between the stars.

Seatown may not have a lot going for it – apart from the Roy Orbison lookalikes and Super Seventies Special every Thursday night, of course – but it's the place Mark Hammonds calls home. And after a decade away, it's the place he returns to when he has nowhere else to go.

From dead bikers to dodgy drug deals, from one downbeat bar to another, from strippers to gangsters and back again: the luckless former musician bounces from one misdeed to the next along with a litany of old acquaintances, almost as though he never left.

And if only he can shake off everybody who wants to kill, maim or otherwise hurt him, maybe he could even think about staying. After all, there’s no place like home...

Charlotte feels shell-shocked as she takes in the scene before her. To the left is her (ex?) fiancé’s retreating figure as he hotfoots it back to civilization; in front, the crumbling Greek island farmhouse she thought was their shared dream; and just below, a goat munching merrily on her sunhat… One year ago, as they drowned their post-holiday blues, Jamie had leaped at Charlotte’s idea to permanently swap drizzly Chester for sun-drenched Crete. Now it looks like she’ll be living this dream alone. Devastated, she rolls up her sleeves and gets to work, pouring her misery–and her anger–into turning this derelict house into her forever home. At least the local community welcomes her into their lemon-scented bosom, along with sexy, provoking restaurant-owner-slash-handyman Darius. Taking a sledgehammer to her old life and snacking on homemade honey cake on her breaks, Charlotte begins to see the promise of a future without Jamie. But on a trip back to Chester, he suddenly appears, wanting her back. Faced with a choice between the first love who broke her heart and the gorgeous Greek man, err scenery, that has been putting it back together, how will Charlotte decide where she truly belongs?

High on a snow-swept mountain sits Baldpate Inn, a glamorous summer resort now locked tight against the freezing winds of December. It is here that novelist William Magee seeks the ultimate solitude to write his masterpiece, armed with the only key to the grand front doors.
    Or so he thinks.
His dreams of absolute peace are quickly shattered as a bizarre cast of characters begins to arrive—each possessing their own key, and each spinning a wildly improbable tale to explain their presence. From a lovelorn haberdasher to an eccentric professor, a professional hermit, and a dazzling young woman claiming to be an actress pulling a publicity stunt, Magee suddenly finds himself trapped in a madcap house of lies. With a mysterious safe, rumors of political corruption, and gunshots ringing out in the dark, the snowbound retreat transforms into a high-stakes puzzle where no one is who they claim to be.
Seven Keys to Baldpate is a timeless blend of classic mystery, sharp wit, and unexpected romance that will keep you guessing until the final key is turned.

Jack Keefe is a talented, brash, and conceited young bush-league pitcher. Impervious to both advice and sarcasm, Keefe rises to the heights, but his inability to learn from his mistakes might just be his undoing. Told through a series of letters written from Keefe to his friend, Al, this baseball classic maintains a balance between the funny and the moving, the pathetic and the glorious.
Nostalgic in its view of pre–World War I America, a time before the "live" ball, a time filled with names like Ty Cobb, Charles Comiskey, Walter Johnson, and Eddie Cicotte, this is not a simple period piece. It is about competition, about the ability to reason, and, most of all, it is about being human. First published in 1914, You Know Me Al tells us as much about ourselves today as it did nearly a hundred years ago.
