Synopsis

260 AD. - After a long and luminous military career, which led him from a simple recruit to becoming governor of Germania Inferior, Marcus Cassianus Latinus Postumus finds himself at a crossroads. Fraternally bound to the legionnaires but bound to obey the orders of the august Gallienus and his despotic son Saloninus, he is forced to make a choice from which he has long fled: listen to his heart and dare
leveraging the support of the troops, or continue to live as a servant.
His decision will radically change the Roman empire of the third century. In an era marked by barbarian invasions, infighting, and especially secessionist uprisings, Postumus will emerge imposing himself as the best alternative to the legitimate emperor, giving rise to a kingdom that will hold Rome in check for years.
And which, like the latter, will experience harsh battles, betrayals, and fatal conspiracies.

During the last two decades, there has been much scholarly and popular interest in the financialization of the American economy—why the turn to finance has taken place, what constituted it, and what has come out of it. In Disembedded, Basak Kus draws from the theories of Karl Polanyi—one of the greatest and most influential political economists of the twentieth century—to answer these questions. Focused primarily on the state's regulatory role in a dominantly financialized economy, Kus examines how neoliberal principles influenced the evolution of American regulatory policies, shaping the financial sector's operations and practices. Her narrative traces the trajectory of these interactions, highlighting critical junctures, policy decisions, and market outcomes that culminated in the financial crisis. Offering historical insights into the financial crisis spanning 2007-2010 and its ensuing influence on American politics and democracy, Disembedded provides a broad-ranging and systemic explanation of the American political economy, especially the regulatory landscape that shaped the patterns of financialization.

The Book of Esther, also known in Hebrew as "the Scroll" ("the Megillah"), is a book in the third section of the Jewish Tanakh (the Hebrew Bible). It is one of the five Scrolls (Megillot) in the Hebrew Bible and later became part of the Christian Old Testament.
The book relates the story of a Hebrew woman in Persia, born as Hadassah but known as Esther, who becomes queen of Persia and thwarts a genocide of her people. The story forms the core of the Jewish festival of Purim, during which it is read aloud twice: once in the evening and again the following morning. The books of Esther and Song of Songs are the only books in the Hebrew Bible that do not mention God.

For two hundred years, British slave ships plied in the Middle Passage, taking African men, women, and children to their doom. Together with a community of dynamic reformers, Wilberforce struggled to rid his nation of evil and to give dignity and freedom to all people - slave and slave trader, poor and powerful. His example continues to inspire others to use their gifts and influence to do good against the odds.

Living in a dysfunctional family isn't easy. But while you can't choose where you come from, you can choose the lessons you take away.

Bestselling recovery author Karen Casey looks at stories of people who grew up in dysfunctional families and "the good stuff" that can, ironically, come from the experience. She interviews survivors who emerged from the fires of turbulent households affected by abuse, addiction, or other problems, and reveals how they came to process their often-harrowing personal trials and, against the odds, triumph over their difficulties—using skills they honed in response to their childhoods. In The Good Stuff from Growing Up in a Dysfunctional Family, Casey reveals the stories and the skills they developed to live more creative and fulfilling lives, and not just survive but thrive.

"Using her interviews as groundwork, she explores the benefits that result from surviving in a dysfunctional family, including resiliency, perseverance, a sense of humor, forgiveness, kindness, and the ability to discern real love." —Publishers Weekly
