“Some say it was the apocalypse, but if that's true, then why are we still here?” 
Mia Thomas is still alive. One of the few left to brave an inhospitable new world. Haunted by a secret guilt and the threat of extinction she finds safety in the company of orphaned companions. Survivors like herself who lost everything that fateful day; now forced to scavenge for resources in what remains of San Francisco. 
But they’re not the only ones searching. There are dangerous men in the city. The scavengers call them Takers. Lawless cutthroats driven by greed, ready to kill anyone who gets in their way. 
Retreating to a hidden base in the woods is the only chance they have to evade discovery. A most unusual place where laundry days are cause for excitement and the trees are full of secrets. There, the sweet simplicity of life almost makes up for the world they lost, until need forces them back to the city. What begins as a routine scavenging trip will threaten to destroy everything they've created and thought they knew. After all, it's one thing to steer clear of Takers in the city, it’s another to bring one home...
