    Early Persecution of Christians...

In the early 1st century A.D., the Romans were bewildered about how to handle Judea, where the Jews were absolutely, adamantly opposed to worshiping any deity above God (in the universal form of Yahweh), or even alongside or beneath God. At this point in their theological history, the Jews had become strict monotheists, and they believed worshiping the emperor as a deity would imperil their immortal souls. Therefore, they absolutely refused to do this and were willing to die for their faith. The Jewish refusal to tolerate the Cult of the Emperor in their main place of worship was a direct challenge to Roman political power, whereas the Roman refusal to recognize Jewish monotheism was a direct challenge to Jewish theology. It would bring about incredibly deadly conflicts in Judea in the last half of the century.
Given that backdrop, it might not be surprising that the Romans had little tolerance for a nascent monotheistic offshoot of Judaism: Christianity. Early Christianity’s most famous and effective missionary, Paul the Apostle, was martyred during the reign of Nero, and oppression as an official state policy would take hold under Nero in the wake of the Great Fire of Rome. Nero ranks among the very worst of the emperors, alongside the likes of mad Caligula, slothful Commodus, and paranoid Domitian, a figure so hated that, in many ancient Christian traditions, he is literally considered the Antichrist. According to a notable Biblical scholar, the coming of the Beast and the number 666 in the Book of Revelation are references to Nero.
The extent of the oppression would continue to ebb and flow for centuries, often depending on the personal whims of emperors, before reaching a fevered pitch in the 3rd century as Rome was wracked by civil wars and constant unrest. In the wake of Diocletian’s murderous policies, Constantine would finally reverse the discrimination before ultimately converting the entire empire.

Touching true stories from the heyday of the Butlin’s holiday camps.
‘When I got to the camp I felt as if I’d suddenly walked into Utopia – it was so colourful, so warm, so friendly. There were lights across the roads, there were banners fluttering in the breeze… There seemed to be laughter coming from every building.’
With grey post-WWII skies hanging low over Britain, factories lining the streets and smoke stacks dotting the horizon, there was one way that ordinary families could escape: the ever-cheerful holiday camps of Butlin’s.
When Billy Butlin founded his holiday camps in 1936, they were bastions of community spirit and havens of luxury. Here, for one week, wives and mothers were freed from the toil and drudgery of housework, children ran free through the grounds, fathers and husbands hung up their work clothes. Ever-helpful redcoats were on hand all hours of the day, dinner halls ready with plentiful food for old and young alike, bars stocked to quench any level of thirst, ballrooms waiting to be flooded with shiny shoes, rustling dresses and peals of laughter. And, as the sun went down on another exhausting, happy day, a chorus line was ready to sing holidaymakers back to their beds.
Rich in period detail and highly evocative, Wish You Were Here! follows the lives of seven of the camps’ key figures through the highs and lows of the holiday season: from redcoats searching for stardom to young families who returned year after year, to pensioners who rediscovered an inner youth.
The laughter and tears, the loves and losses, and the fun and friendships that have lasted a lifetime – it's all here.
Funny, moving and heartwarming, they are tales of swimming pools and sing-a-longs, Glamorous Grannies and bicycle rides, and of a community spirit that burned brightly in a much-loved British institution.
In Wish You Were Here!, Lynn Russell takes us on a journey through the best of British history, right into the heart of Butlin's holiday camps. It's a slice of Europe's past, filled with laughter, love, and a community spirit that's truly inspiring.

That morning, like every other day, he woke up, had his breakfast, got dressed up for work and left. But that evening, instead of returning home, he boarded a train to take him away from all his daily certainties—the people he loved and from the wealth he owned.

Leaving behind a million-dollar business, his favourite Porsche, this chess champion, and sought-after motivational speaker, with no warning and no intimation to his family, simply walked away from it all at the age of 21. Did he know that he was probably walking through the door of no-return, leaving behind a loving and supportive family? Perhaps. It's not that he didn't care about their feelings. Rather it was because he no longer could turn a deaf ear to his inner calling.

"The millions of dollars in my bank account, my cars, my properties are all material wealth and at the end of the day, lifeless. I wasn't born with these possessions and won't take it away with me when I die. So, is it worth the struggle? What is life all about then?"

With one stroke he cast away the labels—son, brother, CEO, MBA-holder—that he felt defined him. He called this new life nakedness, not in physical terms but in being nothing, having nothing, not even an identity or a name, a life of a monk, Om Swami.
