Synopsis

In the annals of American history, the Ninth Texas Cavalry stands as a beacon of courage and resilience, a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who fought for their beliefs during the Civil War. This book chronicles their remarkable journey, from their humble beginnings in the rolling hills of Texas to their epic battles across the war-torn Confederacy.

Drawing from a wealth of primary sources, including letters, diaries, and official records, this book paints a vivid picture of the Ninth Texas Cavalry's odyssey. It follows them as they cross the Red River into Indian Territory, eager to prove their mettle. It recounts their trials and triumphs, their sacrifices and their unwavering spirit.

Theirs is a story of courage and resilience, of camaraderie and loss. They faced starvation and disease, endured scorching heat and bitter cold, and witnessed unspeakable horrors. They fought in some of the most brutal battles of the Civil War, from Shiloh to Jenkins' Ferry, from Yellow Bayou to Poison Spring. They charged into the fray with unwavering courage, their hearts filled with a fierce determination to defend their homeland.

Yet, even in the darkest of times, they found solace in the bonds of camaraderie. They shared their hopes and fears, their joys and sorrows, their dreams for the future. They relied on each other for support and strength, forming an unbreakable brotherhood that would last long after the war had ended.

The Ninth Texas Cavalry's story is a microcosm of the Civil War itself, a conflict that tore the nation apart and left an indelible scar on the American psyche. It is a story of sacrifice and suffering, of heroism and heartbreak. But it is also a story of hope and resilience, a testament to the indomitable spirit of the American people.

This book is a tribute to the brave men of the Ninth Texas Cavalry. It is a reminder of the sacrifices they made and the legacy they left behind. It is a story that will inspire and captivate readers for generations to come.

An account of the emergence and development of white consciousness throughout American history.

In The Making of White American Identity, Ron Eyerman provides an explanation for how whiteness has become a basis for collective identification and collective action in the United States. Drawing upon his previous work on the formation of African American identity, as well as cultural trauma theory, collective memory, and social movements, he reveals how and under what conditions such a collective identification emerges, as well as how the mobilization of collective action around an ideology of whiteness and white superiority. Eyerman explores how the American identity was, and is still being established, through both historical and more recent events, including the Civil War, the Civil Rights movement, the election of a Black president, the Charlottesville confrontation, and the violent conflict at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. He further shows how each event revitalized the trauma narratives stemming from the nation's founding tensions, mobilizing social forces around the idea of white superiority and white consciousness. Tracing the historical contexts and social conditions under which individuals and groups move through this process, the author also looks forward at the prospects of the ideology of white supremacy as a political force in the United States.

World War II was fought on a scale unlike anything before or since in human history, and the unfathomable casualty counts are attributable in large measure to the carnage inflicted between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union during Hitler’s invasion of Russia and Stalin’s desperate defense. The invasion came in 1941 following a nonaggression pact signed between the two in 1939, which allowed Hitler to focus his attention on the west without having to worry about an attack from the eastern front. While Germany was focusing on the west, the Soviet Union sent large contingents of troops to the border region between the two countries, and Stalin’s plan to take territory in Poland and the Baltic States angered Hitler. By 1940, Hitler viewed Stalin as a major threat and had made the decision to invade Russia: “In the course of this contest, Russia must be disposed of...Spring 1941. The quicker we smash Russia the better.”
Stalin knew that if he could delay an invasion through the summer of 1941, he would be safe for another year, but Hitler began to plan to invade Russia by May of 1941. Since military secrets are typically the hardest to keep, Stalin soon began to hear rumors of the invasion, but even when Winston Churchill contacted him in April of 1941 warning him that German troops seemed to be massing on Russia’s border, Stalin remained dubious. Stalin felt even more secure in his position when the Germans failed to invade the following May.
The Soviets were so caught by surprise at the start of the attack that the Germans were able to push several hundred miles into Russia across a front that stretched dozens of miles long, reaching the major cities of Leningrad and Sevastopol in just three months. In order to make clear his determination to win at all costs, Stalin had the three men in charge of the troops defending Minsk executed for their failure to hold their position.

    Anarchism and Society - How...

Anarchism, as a political philosophy, is fundamentally concerned with the question of authority and its rightful place in society. The central tenet of anarchism is the belief that no individual or institution should have absolute power over others. This idea rejects hierarchical structures and the idea of the state as a necessary or legitimate institution. Anarchism calls for a society where individuals govern themselves through voluntary cooperation and mutual aid, without the need for a coercive state apparatus.
Historically, anarchism has evolved from a series of intellectual traditions and movements that have sought to challenge the dominant power structures in society. It draws heavily on the ideas of early political thinkers such as Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, who famously declared, "Property is theft!" and Mikhail Bakunin, who argued for the abolition of the state and the establishment of a society based on collective freedom and self-management. These thinkers were critical of the state, capitalism, and other forms of social hierarchy that limit human freedom.
Anarchism is often misunderstood or misrepresented as a chaotic or violent ideology. However, at its core, anarchism advocates for a peaceful and just society where individuals are free to govern themselves without external control. Anarchists argue that true freedom can only be achieved when people are no longer subject to the oppressive structures of the state, capitalism, or other forms of authoritarian control. They advocate for the dismantling of oppressive institutions and the creation of a more equitable and cooperative society.
