  Historians describe Cambodia as the Khmer State or the Angkorian Empire (Khmer:) from the 9th century to the 15th century, when it was a Hindu/Buddhist empire in Southeast Asia. The empire, which developed from the old societies of Funan and Chenla, governed and/or "vassalized" the majority of mainland Southeast Asia and parts of Southern China, covering from the suggestion of the Indochinese Peninsula northward to modern-day Yunnan province in China, and from Vietnam westward to Myanmar. The Khmer Empire was greater at its peak than the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire) that existed at the exact same period. 
  The site of Angkor, in modern-day Cambodia, which worked as the Khmer capital throughout the empire's prime time, is maybe its most long-lasting tradition. The stunning Angkor structures, like Angkor Wat and Bayon, attest to the Khmer Empire's incredible strength and wealth, remarkable art and culture, architectural strategy, visual accomplishments, and the series of belief systems that it bought from in time. Angkor was the world's biggest pre-industrial cosmopolitan center between the 11th and 13th centuries, according to satellite photography.

Later, the discovery of gold in the 18th century led to a gold rush that contributed significantly to Brazil's wealth, though it also exacerbated regional disparities and social inequalities. 
  As the 19th century unfolded, Brazil transitioned into an empire, and its economic structure shifted once again. Coffee became the dominant export, driving the expansion of the country’s agricultural economy. The development of railways and the establishment of coffee plantations in the southeastern regions played a critical role in consolidating Brazil’s position as a major global supplier. However, this period of growth was also marked by profound social and economic inequalities, particularly in the form of slavery, which continued until its abolition in 1888.

  The period before the rise of the Sui Dynasty was marked by fragmentation and instability, as China remained divided between the Northern and Southern Dynasties. This era, which lasted from the late 4th century to the late 6th century, was characterized by constant warfare, shifting alliances, and a deep cultural divide between the north and south. The fall of this system set the stage for the reunification of China under the Sui Dynasty. 
  The north was ruled by a succession of non-Han Chinese states, often founded by nomadic groups that had migrated into China during the decline of the Western Jin Dynasty. The Northern Wei, established by the Tuoba clan of the Xianbei people, was the most powerful of these states. Over time, the rulers of the Northern Wei adopted Chinese customs, Confucian governance, and Buddhism, which helped stabilize their rule. However, internal struggles, court intrigue, and opposition from powerful aristocratic families led to the dynasty’s division into the Eastern and Western Wei, eventually giving rise to the Northern Qi and Northern Zhou dynasties. 
  In contrast, the Southern Dynasties were ruled by Han Chinese elites who maintained a more traditional Chinese way of life. The Eastern Jin, followed by the Liu Song, Southern Qi, Liang, and Chen dynasties, governed the southern regions, centered around the lower Yangtze River. These dynasties often suffered from weak central control, as powerful noble families exerted significant influence over the government. While the south was culturally rich and economically prosperous, political instability and frequent coups weakened its ability to resist northern invasions.
