  Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was born in Salem, Massachusetts. His ancestors include John Hathorne, the only judge involved in the Salem witch trials who never repented of his actions. Nathaniel later added W to make his name Hawthorne in order to hide his relation. 
  The Scarlet Letter, his most famous novel, was published in 1850, followed by a succession of other novels, including The House of the Seven Gables, and various short stories. 
  The British Matron is a satirical essay. 
  Narrator Alfred C. Martino is a graduate of Duke University and The Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. He currently lives in Jersey City.

  Gautam Sachdeva first visited the Advaita sage Ramesh Balsekar in February 2000, and has been attending his talks ever since. Over a period of eight years, he also found himself taking on the role of a publisher, working intimately with Ramesh in the process of publishing some of his books. In May 2007, Gautam wrote an article in Life Positive, India’s leading spiritual magazine, as a tribute to Ramesh on his 90th birthday. With the heartwarming response from readers to this article, and Ramesh’s suggestion to make it into a booklet, he then put down what he considered the core of the teaching as presented by Ramesh – to seekers from all over the world – in his morning talks. Most of Ramesh’s books have been published from his original hand-written notes, or are transcripts of dialogues with seekers.   The Seminole tribe is one of the best known Native American tribes, and one of the most feared among 19th century Americans and Spaniards. In fact, the origin of the term Seminole comes from a Spanish description of them as “wild”, which belies the fact that the Seminole had friendly relations with the British and Spanish during the colonial era.  
  	To appreciate Seminole Native American mythology, their history and origins must be understood. Their forebears, the Muscogee, first migrated into what is now the Southeastern United States from various points in the north and west, which they accomplished by overpowering the indigenous inhabitants. The region was already occupied by several groups, including the Yuchi and Hitchiti, tribes that were likely descendants of the Moundbuilders. These tribes were subdued and then integrated into the Muscogee system. Thus, the traditions, beliefs, rituals, and mythologies of these various groups became the communal belief system of the Muscogee collective.  	 
  	According to the Muscogee, humans emerged “somewhere in the west,” a location described as the “foundation of all things” or the “backbone” of the Earth. Most scholars associate this location with the Rocky Mountains, and they credit the Four Corners area of the United States as being the location for the creation myths of Native American groups like the Pueblo. Though still not commonly understood, Breathmaker became the creator god of the Seminole peoples (the name is also written as Breath Maker and Maker of Breath), and he became the center of a cycle of creation stories.

  Thales of Miletus, often hailed as the first philosopher in Western history, was born in the ancient Greek city of Miletus, around 624 BCE. As a figure whose contributions have shaped the course of philosophy, science, and mathematics, Thales stands as a foundational figure in intellectual history. Although much of his life remains shrouded in mystery due to the passage of time, the few details that have survived reveal a thinker whose ideas and insights went beyond the conventional beliefs of his era. 
  Thales is traditionally considered the first to break away from mythological explanations of the world. Prior to Thales, the Greek understanding of nature was largely dominated by myth and religious explanations, where gods and divine forces were invoked to explain the natural phenomena. Thales, however, proposed a radical shift by seeking rational, natural explanations. He is best known for his theory that water is the fundamental substance from which everything originates. This insight marks a profound moment in intellectual history because it moved away from mythological thinking and introduced the idea of a unifying principle underlying all things. 
  In addition to his contributions to philosophy, Thales was also a mathematician and astronomer, and his influence in these fields is considerable. He is credited with being the first to predict a solar eclipse, using his understanding of the stars and celestial movements. His work in geometry is equally important—he is famously known for Thales’ Theorem, which laid the groundwork for the development of geometry. This theorem states that if two points are on a circle, and a line is drawn through them, then the center of that line will always lie on a straight line through the center of the circle. This geometric insight shows his ability to understand and systematize mathematical concepts that were previously unexamined.
