Synopsis

In the heart of Southeast Asia lies a nation with a captivating history marked by struggles, triumphs, and a relentless pursuit of democracy: the Philippines. "The Unending Struggle: The Marcoses, the Aquinos, and the Unfinished Revolution" delves into the intricate tapestry of this nation's journey, shedding light on the pivotal moments and extraordinary individuals who shaped its destiny.

At the center of this narrative are two prominent families: the Marcoses and the Aquinos. Ferdinand Marcos, a charismatic and ambitious leader, rose to power in the 1960s, promising a golden age of progress. However, his rule soon descended into authoritarianism, marred by corruption, human rights abuses, and the suppression of dissent.

On the other side of the political spectrum, the Aquino family emerged as beacons of hope, representing the aspirations of a nation yearning for change. Benigno Aquino Jr., a staunch advocate of democracy and justice, challenged Marcos's iron-fisted rule, ultimately paying the ultimate price with his life. His assassination in 1983 ignited a wave of outrage and defiance, culminating in the People Power Revolution that toppled Marcos from power and ushered in a new era of democracy.

Cory Aquino, Benigno's widow, assumed the presidency in the aftermath of the revolution, becoming a symbol of unity and reconciliation. Her administration grappled with the daunting task of rebuilding a nation shattered by years of dictatorship, confronting economic challenges, political instability, and lingering social divisions.

The Marcoses and the Aquinos, polarizing figures in Philippine history, left an indelible mark on the nation's political landscape. Their legacies continue to be debated and dissected, shaping the country's ongoing struggle for justice, equality, and lasting peace.

"The Unending Struggle" is an exploration of the Marcoses, the Aquinos, and the unfinished revolution that has shaped the Philippines. Through a comprehensive examination of historical events, political intrigue, and the lives of key individuals, it sheds light on the complexities of Philippine history and the enduring quest for a better future.

Remember to Forget, a gripping and thought-provoking memoir that inspires as it teaches with all the skillful pacing of a psychological suspense novel.
The author asks then suggests: What weapons do we have to defend ourselves against deeply hidden assaults from the past? Without the fragments of memory linked together into a full picture of our personal history, we may remain helpless victims.
Sex permeates Vernetta’s traumatic young life while living with her single mother and older sister. The chaos of life with Mother and her alcohol-fueled anger emerges in Vernetta’s adult years as a suicidal-depression that propels her into therapy where conflicted personality fragments introduce themselves. Within months, dissociated-forgotten memories of sexual trauma are manifested by severe, incapacitating physical experiences.
Throughout her life, Vernetta manages to continue the relationship with her mother. Then after Mother’s death, Vernetta is motivated to search for answers to lingering-mystifying questions, her final pathway to wellness. Why did Mother deliberately burn down her family home at age fifteen? she asks herself. What is the truth of why baby brother Buddy was suddenly gone? And the last relentless question, Why was Mother so angry? Although the search plunges Vernetta into Mother’s murky past, the difficult answers bring restorative healing.

Long before their country officially joined the war, American aid workers were active in rescue efforts across Europe. Two such Americans were Martha and Waitstill Sharp, who were originally sent to Prague as part of a relief effort but turned immediately to helping Jews and dissidents after the 1939 invasion by Germany.

They were not the only ones. Renowned historian Debórah Dwork follows the story of rescue workers in five major cities as the refugee crisis expanded to Vilna, Shanghai, Marseille, and Lisbon. Followed by Nazi agents, spiriting people across borders, they learned secrecy.

Others negotiated with government representatives, like Laura Margolis, who worked with the Japanese, to get enough food and warm shelter for the refugees in Shanghai. Yet, the women also often faced lack of support from their agencies; if part of a couple, they fought to get paid even at a low salary despite working as long and hard as their husbands.

Moving and revelatory, Saints and Liars illuminates the unpredictable circumstances with which these aid workers contended, while revealing the moral questions they encountered and the devastating decisions they had to make.
