Synopsis

In this thought-provoking and timely book, we embark on a journey through the twilight of thought, a world where grand narratives have crumbled and familiar certainties have dissolved. We explore the major themes and issues that define our current moment, from the crisis of democracy and the rise of populism to the ecological crisis and the future of work.

Through a series of thought-provoking essays, we delve into the ways in which technology is transforming our lives, both for better and for worse. We examine the changing nature of identity and the search for meaning in a world where traditional belief systems are no longer tenable. And we consider the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead as we navigate the uncharted waters of the 21st century.

As we journey through the twilight of thought, we may find ourselves questioning our most basic assumptions about the world and our place in it. But it is in this questioning, in this willingness to let go of what we thought we knew, that we can find the seeds of a new understanding, a new way of being in the world.

This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the complex and rapidly changing world we live in. It is a call to action, a challenge to question the status quo and to imagine a better future.

The Night Has Its Own Darkness is a chorus of women’s voices - remembered, imagined, and reborn. Across generations and continents, they rise from silence to speak their truths: of love and loss, of resistance and longing, of faith, exile, and survival.
Among them are the iconic and the forgotten, women we thought we knew, now revealing who they truly were, and others whose names were never spoken aloud.
Each voice burns like a candle in the dark, passing its flame to the next, forming a fragile, luminous chain of remembrance that refuses to fade.
Written by J. M. Niv and narrated with the extraordinary presence by Erika Calvert, this audiobook becomes more than a reading, it is an act of listening, a haunting dialogue between past and present.
Every voice carries the breath of those who came before, every pause holds the weight of what was never said.Moving between history and memory, between the living and the lost, The Night Has Its Own Darkness invites the listener to bear witness, to stand in the quiet and hear the light.

What does it mean to be Malay in the 21st century? Especially in a country like Malaysia where identity politics is questioned on an almost daily basis, and policed by the state. 16 years later after the publication of I Am Muslim, Dina Zaman returns to write a memoir, writing about what it means to be Malay, and Muslim in the 21st century.

The writer embarked on Malayland during the Covid pandemic, to understand the anger and frustrations of her fellow ethnic Malays who were fighting against (imagined) enemies and a new world order impacted by a virus that killed over seven million people globally. She grew up in a Malaysia that was seething with anger, bubbling underneath the many nightclubs Malaysia was famed for in the 1980s, that witnessed how secularism killed its Malay Muslim heritage. The 1998 Reformasi movement changed Malaysia and whether for the better, is left up to Malaysians to decide.

Today race and faith are discussed and embraced frenetically, where hateful extremism is hidden under the guise of nationalism. Young Malaysians are asserting their political and birth identities through social media. And along the way, the sense of irony and humour that Malaysia is known for, has lost its way. Malayland is a reflective book: memories and flashbacks of a childhood filled with earthquakes, spooks and a sense of wonderment and curiosity about a country that is fighting for a desired identity.

Six has always been a number we group things around – Six of the best, six of one half a dozen of another, six feet under, six pack, six degrees of separation and a sixth sense are but a few of the ways we use this number.

Such is its popularity that we thought it is also a very good way of challenging and investigating an author’s work to give width, brevity, humour and depth across six of their very best.

In this series we gather together authors whose short stories both rivet the attention and inspire the imagination to visit their gems in a series of six, to roam across an author’s legacy in a few short hours and gain a greater understanding of their writing and, of course, to be lavishly entertained by their ideas, their narrative and their way with words.

These stories can be surprising and sometimes at a tangent to what we expected, but each is fully formed and a marvellous adventure into the world and words of a literary master.

A new collection of pieces on literature and life by the author of Am I Alone Here?, a finalist for the NBCC Award for Criticism

From the acclaimed fiction writer about whom Dwight Garner of the New York Times wrote, "You know from the second you pick him up that he's the real deal," comes Still No Word from You, a unique chain of essays and intimate stories that meld the lived life and the reading life. For Orner, there is no separation. Covering such well-known writers as Lorraine Hansberry, Primo Levi, and Marilynne Robinson, as well as other greats like Maeve Brennan and James Alan McPherson, Orner's highly personal take on literature alternates with his own true stories of loss and love, hope and despair. In his mother's copy of A Coney Island of the Mind, he's stopped short by a single word in the margin, "YES!"—which leads him to conjure his mother at twenty-three. He stops reading Penelope Fitzgerald's The Beginning of Spring three quarters of the way through because he knows that finishing the novel will leave him bereft. Orner's solution is to start again from the beginning to slow the inevitable heartache.

Still No Word from You is a book for anyone for whom reading is as essential as breathing.
