Synopsis

In the heart of the North Caucasus, where towering mountains meet vast plains, lies Chechnya, a land steeped in history, conflict, and resilience. This book delves into the complex tapestry of Chechnya's past and present, offering a comprehensive examination of its history, politics, and society.

Through extensive research, interviews with key figures, and firsthand accounts, this book provides a nuanced understanding of Chechnya's struggles for independence, the impact of war and violence, and the indomitable spirit of its people. It explores the roots of Chechnya's conflict, tracing the legacy of imperial rule and the collapse of the Soviet Union, and delving into the descent into violence, examining the causes and consequences of the two Chechen wars.

The book also sheds light on the devastating impact of the conflict on Grozny, Chechnya's capital, and the challenges of post-conflict reconstruction. It analyzes the rise of Ramzan Kadyrov and his consolidation of power, investigating the implications of his rule and the role of the Chechen diaspora and the international community in addressing the ongoing challenges in the region.

Furthermore, the book explores Chechnya's cultural heritage and identity, the efforts to revive and promote its traditions amidst the devastation of war, and the economic development and reconstruction efforts underway. It examines the struggle for human rights and reconciliation, the need for accountability and justice, and the challenges of addressing past human rights violations.

Finally, the book concludes by examining the future of Chechnya, considering the long-term implications of conflict and displacement, the need for political reforms and good governance, and the role of education and youth empowerment in building a just and sustainable future.

This book is an essential resource for anyone seeking to understand the complex history, politics, and society of Chechnya. It provides a balanced and comprehensive account of the region's challenges and opportunities, amplifying the voices of its people and contributing to a deeper understanding of the path towards lasting peace and reconciliation.

Peacefulness is often viewed as a state of being calm and free from disturbance, but its true nature goes much deeper. It is not just the absence of noise, chaos, or stress; it is a profound inner state that arises from balance and harmony within oneself. To understand peacefulness, it is essential to recognize that it is not a passive experience. It requires conscious effort, self-awareness, and intentional practice.
At its core, peacefulness is a state of mind. It is about finding tranquility within oneself, irrespective of external circumstances. While external factors such as a quiet environment or a peaceful community may contribute to our sense of peace, the ultimate source of serenity lies within. True peacefulness is not fleeting or dependent on situations. It is a lasting quality that can remain even in the face of challenges.
A peaceful person is someone who has cultivated the ability to remain centered in the midst of life’s inevitable ups and downs. This kind of peace is not about escaping from the world or disengaging from responsibilities. Instead, it is about responding to life’s demands with grace, clarity, and composure. A person at peace is able to accept the present moment, without clinging to the past or fearing the future.

A provocative and eye-opening book on the science and history of bisexuality

Significant strides have been made in recent years in the movement for LGBTQ+ rights, visibility, and empowerment, but the conversation is far from over. After years of feeling the crushing dearth of information on bisexuality, psychological
scientist and bestselling author Dr. Julia Shaw has dug deep and found a colorful and fascinating world that she is bringing out of the shadows. It is a personal journey that starts with her own openly bisexual identity and celebrates the
resilience and beautiful diversity of the bi community.

In Bi: The Hidden Culture, History, and Science of Bisexuality, Shaw explores all that we know about the world’s largest sexual minority. From the hunt for a bi gene to the relationship between bisexuality and consensual nonmonogamy to
asylum seekers who need to prove their bisexuality in a court of law, there is more to explore than most have ever realized. This rigorous and entertaining book will challenge us to think deeper about who we are and how we love.

What is the cost of an education?
Is education an additive process or a reductive one?
How does one weigh the benefits of tradition against the threat of being at odds with the future?
How does one refuse the offer of a better life for their children?
What if the offer is compulsory?
What happens when the tree of knowledge bares rotten fruit?
While the history of Canada's Residential School program is only just beginning
to be unearthed, there are already enough first hand accounts to begin asking
some of these questions. The words of the individuals included in this book
offer just a glimpse of the results of the effort of one group of people to
educate people who were in many cases not seeking the knowledge being
offered. These are tales of lessons learned, languages lost, traditions
    replaced, & charity corrupted.

A fascinating mix of Christian, Buddhist, and Daoist thought presented by the original self-help guru in 1910. As Lily L Allen put it, "all his works [are] eminently practical. He never wrote theories, or for the sake of writing; but he wrote when he had a message, and it became a message only when he had lived it out in his own life, and knew that it was good. Thus he wrote facts, which he had proven by practice. "Born in Leicester, UK, to an illiterate mother in 1864, Allen's father left when he was 15 to find work in America, and was promptly murdered on arrival. After leaving school and finding work as a clerk, Allen's writing career lasted for only a decade, from 1902-1912. In that time he wrote nineteen books about how to recognise and live the divine and virtuous life, deeply informed by both Jesus and Buddha. As he puts it in this book,"To have transcendent virtue is to enjoy transcendent felicity. The beatific blessedness which Jesus holds out is promised to those having the beatific virtues—to the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, and so on. The higher virtue does not merely and only lead to happiness, it is happiness. It is impossible for a man of transcendent virtue to be unhappy. The cause of unhappiness must be sought and found in the self-loving elements, and not in the self-sacrificing qualities. A man may have virtue, and be unhappy, but not so if he have divine virtue. Human virtue is mingled with self, and therefore with sorrow; but from divine virtue every taint of self has been purged away, and with it every vestige of misery. "
