Sinopse

In a world yearning for justice and equity, "The Scale of Fairness" emerges as a clarion call, inviting us to explore the intricate tapestry of fairness and its profound impact on our lives. This book embarks on an intellectual journey, delving into the multifaceted nature of fairness, its challenges, and its enduring importance in shaping a more just and equitable society.

Fairness, as an ethical principle, recognizes the inherent worth and dignity of every individual, demanding that we treat others with respect, compassion, and equity. Yet, achieving fairness remains an elusive goal, as societal structures, biases, and inequalities often create formidable barriers. This book unveils the complexities of fairness, examining its role in diverse contexts, from the workplace and criminal justice system to education and politics.

Furthermore, the book explores the intricate relationship between fairness and other societal goals, such as economic prosperity and social justice. It analyzes how these concepts are intertwined and the challenges of balancing them in a fair and equitable manner. The role of government in ensuring fairness is also examined, as the book evaluates the effectiveness of government policies and programs in addressing inequalities and promoting fairness.

Recognizing the importance of individual responsibility, the book emphasizes the role each of us plays in creating a fairer society. It encourages readers to reflect on their own actions, advocacy efforts, and support for policies that promote fairness. By working together, we can build a world where fairness prevails, where every person has the opportunity to reach their full potential, and where justice and equity are the cornerstones of our society.

"The Scale of Fairness" is a thought-provoking exploration of a fundamental principle that shapes our world. It is a call to action, inspiring us to strive for a society where fairness is the guiding force, where every individual is valued and respected, and where justice and equity reign supreme.

A prize-winning memoirist and nature writer turns to the lives of plants entangled in our human world to explore belonging, displacement, identity, and the truths of our shared future

A seed slips beyond a garden wall. A tree is planted on a precarious border. A shrub is stolen from its culture and its land. What happens when these plants leave their original homes and put down roots elsewhere?

In fourteen essays, Dispersals explores the entanglements of the plant and human worlds: from species considered invasive, like giant hogweed; to those vilified but intimate, like soy; and those like kelp, on which our futures depend. Each of the plants considered in this collection are somehow perceived as being "out of place"—weeds, samples collected through imperial science, crops introduced and transformed by our hand. Combining memoir, history, and scientific research in poetic prose, Jessica J. Lee meditates on the question of how both plants and people come to belong, why both cross borders, and how our futures are more entwined than we might imagine.

You've read White Fragility and How to Be an Antiracist, but what comes next? The answer lies in this clear, actionable guide providing an invaluable four-week program for becoming an ally who makes a real difference in the racial justice fight.

Black women have always been the driving force behind real change in this country—especially when it comes to racial justice work. But they shouldn't have to do it alone. If you're ready to stop standing on the sidelines and become anti-racist instead of passively "not racist," then this book is what you need. You'll discover: how to have difficult conversations about white supremacy, racism, and white privilege; how to listen to criticism without defensiveness; why it's harmful to ignore race or claim to be colorblind; and how to expand your racial justice circle by joining groups led by Black women and cultivating a group of like-minded allies.

Racism can only be defeated if white people educate themselves and actively engage in antiracism work, especially in their inner circles. With this book, you'll learn how to change from someone who defends and protects racism to someone who fights against it. And you'll become an example to others that true allies are made, not born.

Muslim relics have become sought after relatively recently, since in the tradition of Islam it is customary to bury the deceased together with his belongings. However, many religious relics have rather controversial origins. Sometimes the faithful sincerely worship artful forgeries masquerading as holy relics and things that supposedly belonged to saints. The real sanctuaries are carefully guarded and are not always accessible to believers. They are brought out for public viewing on especially festive days. It is often represented as creating a special ritual.
It is curious that the attitude towards such relics gradually changed over the centuries. If, at first, they were considered amulets used by private individuals, then over time their purpose and comprehension took on a different character. Most notably, the possession of the relics of the prophet began to be considered one of the arguments in favor of the appointment of the Caliph. The concentration of several relics in one mosque immediately sharply increased, in the eyes of the believers, the piety of such a mosque; this, in turn, immediately affected the growth of its wealth and political influence. Thus, in the published catalog of relics stored in the former Badshahi mosque of the Mughal state in Lahore (now Pakistan), there are 28 items: seven belonged to the prophet himself, three to the son-in-law of the prophet Ali, two to the daughter of the prophet Fatima, five to the grandson of the prophet Hussein, etc. It is believed that some of these items were taken out by Timur after the capture of Damascus, and some were donated by Sultan Bayazid to Timur's descendant, Babur. After the fall of the Mughal dynasty in India, they were first in private possession in the second half of the 19th century. In different ways, they came to the Lahore Mosque.
