Beschreibung

In a world dominated by dominant narratives and marginalized voices, feminist epistemologies offer a revolutionary lens through which to understand the production and dissemination of knowledge. This book invites readers to embark on a journey of epistemic transformation, challenging traditional notions of objectivity and truth.

With thought-provoking chapters written by leading scholars in the field, this book delves into the depths of feminist epistemologies, exploring their implications for knowledge production, research methodologies, and social change. Readers will gain a comprehensive understanding of the power of perspective, the intricate relationship between identity and standpoint, and the urgent need for epistemic justice.

Through engaging discussions and case studies, this book unveils the ways in which feminist epistemologies disrupt and reconstruct traditional paradigms of knowledge. It examines the marginalization of certain forms of knowledge, particularly those rooted in the experiences of marginalized communities, and advocates for the inclusion of diverse perspectives in knowledge creation.

Furthermore, the book explores the transformative potential of feminist research methodologies, highlighting the value of qualitative approaches, participatory methods, and storytelling. It demonstrates how these methods can empower marginalized communities to tell their own stories and challenge dominant narratives.

Recognizing the importance of praxis, this book also investigates the role of feminist epistemologies in social change. It showcases how feminist activists, educators, and policymakers are using these theories to transform institutions, policies, and practices, creating a more just and equitable society.

Ultimately, this book envisions a future where knowledge is not a tool of oppression but a force for liberation. It calls for a transformation of our educational systems, fostering critical thinking, reflexivity, and a commitment to epistemic justice. By embracing the insights of feminist epistemologies, we can create a world where knowledge is diverse, inclusive, and empowers all.

This book is an essential resource for students, scholars, and activists interested in feminist theory, epistemology, and social change. It is also a valuable resource for anyone seeking a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of the world we live in.

In his own words, the war of the doubly pioneering Lt Col Gerhard L. Bolland—82nd Airborne paratrooper on D-Day and senior OSS field operative on Operation Rype.Unconventional warfare tactics can have a considerable effect on the outcome of any war. During World War II, the United States government developed and employed two new methods of fighting. The first was the development of "paratroop" units, as they were first called. The second was the formation of a covert and sabotage operations branch called the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Lt. Colonel Bolland was involved in both of these "firsts." During the D-Day invasion he parachuted behind enemy lines, jumping out of the 82nd Airborne lead aircraft with General James Gavin. After fighting with the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment for thirty-three days straight, he returned to England and became involved with the OSS Scandinavian Section. He served as Field Commander for their Operation, code named Rype. This was the only American military undertaking, albeit covert, in Norway during the entire course of the war. As a young boy growing up in rural western Minnesota, Bolland got his military start with the Minnesota National Guard, before being accepted to West Point, solely on merit. His military career lasted seventeen years. Lt. Colonel Bolland ended up with numerous decorations including the Norwegian Liberation Medal and Citation, the Bronze Star for valor, the French Fouragerre of Croix de Guerre with Palms and posthumously the Congressional Gold medal awarded to the OSS Society on behalf of all former OSS members that served during the war. His story reveals the struggles, successes, failures and ultimate victories, detailing what went right and what went wrong with these new unconventional methods of fighting.

A searing portrait of a country in disarray and of the man at its helm, from "the bravest of Russian journalists" (The New York Times)Hailed as "a lone voice crying out in a moral wilderness" (New Statesman), Anna Politkovskaya made her name with her fearless reporting on the war in Chechnya. Here, she turned her steely gaze on the multiple threats to Russian stability, among them Vladimir Putin himself.Rich with characters and poignant accounts, Putin's Russia depicts a far-reaching state of decay. Politkovskaya describes an army in which soldiers die from malnutrition, parents must pay bribes to recover their dead sons' bodies, and conscripts are even hired out as slaves. She exposes rampant corruption in business, government, and the judiciary, where everything from store permits to bus routes to court appointments is for sale. And she offers a scathing condemnation of the war in Chechnya, where kidnappings, extra-judicial killings, rape, and torture beget terrorism rather than fighting it. Finally, Politkovskaya denounces both Putin, for stifling civil liberties as he pushes the country back to a Soviet-style dictatorship, and the West, for its unqualified embrace of the Russian leader.Sounding an urgent alarm, Putin's Russia is a gripping portrayal of a country in crisis and the testament of a great and intrepid reporter, who received death threats and survived assassination attempts for her scathing criticism of the Kremlin. Tragically, on October 7, 2006, Politkovskaya was shot and found dead in an elevator in her Moscow apartment building. After several years of investigations, five men were imprisoned for her murder.

Otto Kretschmer was only in combat from September 1939 until March 1941 but was Germany's highest-scoring U-boat commander, sinking forty-seven ships. This definitive work details his personal story and the political backdrop from his earliest days.

After completing his officer training and time on the training ship Niobe, he served aboard the light cruiser Emden. In December 1934, he was transferred to the light cruiser Köln, then in January 1936 made the move to the fledgling U-boat service. During the Spanish Civil War, Kretschmer was involved in several patrols as part of the international non-intervention force.

He demonstrated a cool approach to combat: his mantra "one torpedo for one ship" proved that the best way for his boat to succeed against a convoy was to remain surfaced as much as possible, penetrating the convoy and using the boat's high speed and small silhouette to avoid retaliation.

His nickname "Silent Otto" referred to his ability to remain undetected and his reluctance to provide the regular radio reports required by Dönitz. Alongside his military skill was a character that remained rooted in the traditions of the Prussian military.
