Beschreibung

In the annals of American history, the story of the Wentworth Gardens public housing residents' activism stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of a community united against adversity. This book chronicles their inspiring four-decade-long fight against government disinvestment and the threat of demolition, a fight that transformed them from passive victims into active agents of change.

Wentworth Gardens, a public housing development on Chicago's South Side, was once a vibrant community, a place where families thrived despite the challenges of poverty. But as government funding dwindled and the buildings fell into disrepair, Wentworth Gardens became a symbol of urban decay, a place where hope seemed lost.

Yet, a group of determined African-American women refused to succumb to despair. Led by charismatic leaders like Roberta Feldman and Susan Stall, they rose up in resistance, determined to preserve their homes and their community. They organized protests, lobbied elected officials, and advocated for their rights, turning Wentworth Gardens into a hub of activism and a beacon of hope.

Their struggle was not without hardship. They faced poverty, discrimination, and the constant threat of displacement. But they remained steadfast, their resilience and determination unwavering. They formed alliances with other community groups, built a network of support, and created a sense of unity that empowered them to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

The Wentworth Gardens story is a microcosm of the larger struggle for housing justice in America. It is a story of systemic inequality, of the failure of government to provide adequate housing for its citizens. But it is also a story of resilience, of the power of ordinary people to effect change.

This book is a tribute to the women of Wentworth Gardens, whose unwavering resolve and creative resistance tactics inspired a movement. It is a call to action, a reminder that the fight for affordable housing and social justice is far from over. Their story serves as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path towards a more just and equitable society.

Following his election, President Obama's supporters and detractors anticipated radical reform. As the first African American to serve as president, he reached the White House on a campaign promise of change. But, as Burton Kaufman explores in this insightful biography, Obama showed clear patterns of classical conservativism of an ideological sort and basic policy-making pragmatism. His commitment to usher in a multiracial, multiethnic, and multicultural society was fundamentally connected to opening up, but not radically altering, the existing free enterprise system.

The Affordable Care Act was a distillation of President Obama's complex motivations for policy. More conservative than radical, the ACA fitted the expansion of health insurance into the existing system. Similarly, in foreign policy, Obama eschewed the use of force to affect regime change. Yet he kept boots on the ground in the Middle East and supported ballot-box revolts geared toward achieving in foreign countries the same principles of liberalism, free enterprise, and competition that existed in the United States.

In estimating the course and impact of Obama's full political life, Kaufman makes clear that both the desire for and fear of change in the American polity affected the popular perception but not the course of action of the forty-fourth US president.

Self-reliance is often rooted in the idea that no matter the circumstances that you were born into, you can still make something of yourself and your life and leave a mark on this world. One of Louisa´s favourite writers was the German poet, Goethe. Goethe was born into great wealth, which eventually led him to challenge himself. Being born as a rich man caused emptiness. Some readers might notice that this is down to tee Laurie´s character. Goethe eventually found writing to be his calling, and he recommended work as the best remedy for a broken heart. In Little Women, when Laurie is in Vienna after he has been rejected by Jo and has been lectured by Amy, he's writing an opera which would quote "harrow Jo´s soul and melt her heart" But he just keeps seeing Jo in the most unflattering ways and soon Jo is replaced by a beautiful ghost who looks a lot like Amy, and Laurie sees himself as a romantic prince. I have seen about 14 Little Women adaptations, and this part of Laurie in Vienna has never been adapted, which is a problem. Laurie is flirting with this ghost for a while, and then he stops and for the first time in his life, Laurie realizes that what he's doing is silly and he remembers Amy's words. She took his hands and said that they were soft and white as a woman's and they had never done a day's work. Only picked flowers for girls and wore Jouvin´s best gloves. As a result of this, Laurie goes to work for his grandfather. Laurie's character arc in Little Women is not about Amy or Jo. It is the story of how Laurie becomes a man. In Louisa May Alcott´s world, the only acceptable wealthy people are philanthropists. With Laurie´s character, Louisa May Alcott criticised the people who are on the top of the class system.

Welcome to exploring this extraordinary audiobook in which you will learn about the use of cannabis as a therapy for patients with autism spectrum disorders.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurological dysfunction of neurobiological origin with developmental initiation in childhood. ASD affects the development of social communication and behavior, with repetitive and restricted behaviors and interests. It is characterized by a chronic evolution, with different degrees of affectation, functional adaptation, and affecting language and intellectual development, depending on the case and evolutionary moment.
According to the WHO statistical rate, one in 160 children has an autism spectrum disorder globally. This estimate represents an average figure, as the observed predominance varies considerably between studies. However, some controlled studies have reported much higher figures. The prevalence of ASD in many low- and middle-income countries is so far unknown. Therefore, there is a greater need to address new therapeutic alternatives such as medical cannabis to manage and control this disorder to improve the quality of life for sufferers and their families.
In this audiobook, you will understand how cannabinoids could effectively treat patients diagnosed with this disorder. You will learn about the history, epidemiology, causes, characteristics, how it is classified, what signs patients will have, and how it is diagnosed. You will also learn about the incredible endocannabinoid system, its receptors, its homeostatic-physiological functions, dosage of cannabis-derived medicine, its beneficial and adverse effects. Some clinical studies show that cannabis phytocannabinoids, especially CBD; can work as a therapy to reduce or improve some symptoms of autism spectrum disorder.
We invite you to learn more about the use of medical cannabis in this disorder. Enjoy this audiobook that Pharmacology University brings to you.

In Electrify, Saul Griffith lays out a detailed blueprint—optimistic but feasible—for fighting climate change while creating millions of new jobs and a healthier environment. Griffith's plan can be summed up simply: electrify everything. He explains exactly what it would take to transform our infrastructure, update our grid, and adapt our households to make this possible. Billionaires may contemplate escaping our worn-out planet on a private rocket ship to Mars, but the rest of us, Griffith says, will stay and fight for the future.

Griffith, an engineer and inventor, calls for grid neutrality, ensuring that households, businesses, and utilities operate as equals; we will have to rewrite regulations that were created for a fossil-fueled world, mobilize industry as we did in World War II, and offer low-interest "climate loans." Griffith's plan doesn't rely on big, not-yet-invented innovations, but on thousands of little inventions and cost reductions. We can still have our cars and our houses—but the cars will be electric and solar panels will cover our roofs. For a world trying to bounce back from a pandemic and economic crisis, there is no other project that would create as many jobs—up to twenty-five million, according to one economic analysis. Is this politically possible? We can change politics along with everything else.

National Ballot Measures 2024 - Living Democracy is my gift to the country that I love dearly and have always wanted to see it survive, thrive and improve.
Whenever I am forced to listen to a speech made by any of our Congressmen or women, I will often count the number of times they will refer to America as a 'Democracy'. They use that word an average of 15 to 20 times per speech.
They'll say things like - "Democracy is not pretty." Or they'll say, "Democracy is messy and people don't want to see how the sausage is made." Or they will say that people are trying to "end the 'American experiment in Democracy."
Or they'll quote one of the greatest of the founding fathers - Benjamin Franklin who was asked as the signers of of the Constitution were leaving: "Mr. Franklin, what kind of government have you given us?"
And Franklin replied: "A Republic, Madam, if you can keep it."
And so, we can take from this very portentous comment from Ben Franklin that the founding fathers were well aware that there would be forces someday who would try to take even this very modest amount of democracy - a Representative form of Democracy away from us.
It would take almost 250 years for this prediction to come true, but here we are under the threat of a dictatorship that could be forced upon us any minute will certainly spell the end of the American Experiment in Democracy, or it will cause a huge upheaval, perhaps even another Civil War, as many are predicting.
Not if we make a MAJOR IMPROVEMENT in our form of Government. .
Every election more than half of our registered voters sit it out and the reason is that every election we find ourselves voting for the same old same old. With the modern technology we have gained, there is no reason why we cannot vote on National Ballot Measures instead of two men in suits.
