Synopsis

The medieval world was a time of great change and upheaval. It was a time of both great darkness and great light. The Middle Ages saw the rise and fall of empires, the spread of new religions, and the birth of new nations. It was a time of great artistic and intellectual achievement, but also a time of great violence and bloodshed.

**In this book, we take a journey through the medieval world, exploring its many facets.**

We visit castles and cathedrals, towns and villages. We meet kings and queens, knights and peasants. We learn about the art and music of the Middle Ages, and we hear the stories of the people who lived during this time.

We also explore the darker side of the medieval world. We learn about the wars that were fought, the diseases that ravaged the population, and the famines that caused widespread suffering. We learn about the persecution of Jews and Muslims, and we hear the stories of the people who were burned at the stake for heresy.

**The medieval world was a complex and fascinating place. It was a time of great contrasts, a time of both great beauty and great ugliness. It was a time of great hope and great despair. But it was also a time of great change, a time when the foundations of the modern world were being laid.**

This book is an invitation to join us on this journey through the medieval world. We hope that you will find it to be a fascinating and rewarding experience.

War has always led to prisoners. In ancient times, many were turned into slaves by the victorious armies, while in medieval Europe, they were often returned to their families in return for a ransom, leading to fortune or poverty depending upon which side one was on. By the Napoleonic era, as armies grew in size and professionalism, many were kept in camps for the duration of the fighting, their captors not wanting to restore their enemies' manpower while the fate of nations hung in the balance.
Prisoners were taken across the world, and prisoners of war were typically comprised of two classes: officers and other ranks. Officers were often treated well, as there was still a sort of aristocratic courtesy among officers, particularly among the Germans, British, French, and somewhat less so for the Russians, Italians, and Turks. Concepts such as honor still held considerable currency, and bravery was greatly admired. Enemy officers as a class often had more in common with each other than with the millions of draftees in their armies, so enlisted men as POWs generally were not as well treated.
Regardless of rank though, throughout the war, many of these men did not sit idle. Many spent their time preparing elaborate escape plans in the hopes of returning to their home nations and back to the fight.
The Second World War was full of escape stories, some bold, some tragic, and most filled with courage and ingenuity. The greatest number of successful escapes was made by Allied troops in Europe, including soldiers left behind after the fall of France and airmen shot down in bombing raids, but escapes happened across the world, from Canadian trains to German castles, and from the mountains of Italy to the wilds of Australia. Axis as well as Allied troops made their bids for freedom, keeping both sides on their toes. Everybody was looking to make the next great escape.

Brought to you by Altrusian Grace Media and narrated by Matthew Schmitz.
In more than 400 verses the Buddha clearly expounds his noble path of virtue for everyman. This foundation scripture teaches the supreme doctrine of nirvana and the way to the highest possible happiness for mankind.
Translated by Oxford professor Dr. Max Muller, a great scholar and Orientalist with an introduction by Kevin Trainor, Associate Professor of Religion at the University of Vermont. The Dhammapada - the Path of Truth - is a beautiful anthology of proverbs and aphorisms which are considered to be as close to the Buddha's own words as we can ever reach.
The work outlines the Buddha's Four Noble Truths: that life is full of suffering, which all of us must accept, that the cause of suffering is desirer, that the removal of desire removes suffering; and finally that deliverance might be obtained by following the Noble Eightfold Path.
The Dhammapada is arranged in chapters which cover themes and topics such as Choices, Wakefulness, the World, the Awakened, Joy, Pleasure, Anger, Impurity, Justice, the Way, Desire, the Seeker and The True Master.

The American way of life is imbued with an evident culture of consumerism and overconsumption. The American Dream has been linked to worldly attitudes and the belief that riches equals happiness. Growing trends in minimalism and the pursuit of happiness, on the other hand, are gaining traction and bringing to light issues such as overconsumption, the physical and mental impacts of clutter, and what actually brings joy.Increasing distractions in everyday life detract from our ability to pay attention and divert our attention from the events that genuinely count. Mindfulness has been shown in the past to be a helpful approach for reducing the deluge of worthless or damaging information. Individuals seeking increased well-being may also benefit from decluttering, according to anecdotal evidence. Is it possible that decluttering, like mindfulness, might increase overall happiness, tranquillity, and mental clarity? Is it true that decluttering boosts confidence, productivity, and relationship happiness? Is it true that decluttering lessens the value of material belongings and feelings of being overwhelmed by "stuff"? In this book, you will find all the answers you are looking for

A tragic death, a murder trial and a 170-year-old mystery – but what really happened?
Shortly after Maria Kirwan died in a lonely inlet on Ireland's Eye, it was decided that she had drowned accidentally during a day spent with her husband on the picturesque island. This inquest verdict appeared to conclude the melancholy events that consumed the fishing village of Howth, Co Dublin, in September 1852.
But not long afterwards, suspicion fell upon Maria's husband, William Burke Kirwan, as whispers of unspeakable cruelty, an evil character and a secret life rattled through the streets of Dublin. Investigations led to William's arrest and trial for murder.
The story swelled into one of the most bitterly divisive chapters in the dark annals of Irish criminal history. Yet questions remain: Does the evidence stand up? What role did the heavy hand of Victorian moral outrage play? Was William really guilty of murder, or did the ever-present 'moral facts' fill in gaps where hard proof was absent?
Now, this compelling modern analysis revisits the key evidence, asking sober questions about the facts, half-facts and fantasies buried within the yellowed pages of the Ireland's Eye case files.
