Synopsis

In the annals of American history, the Polk family stands tall, their story a testament to the resilience, courage, and unwavering belief in the American dream that has shaped this nation. From their humble beginnings in a remote corner of the New World to their rise to prominence on the national stage, the Polks have played a pivotal role in shaping the destiny of the United States.

This captivating book takes readers on a journey through the lives of the Polk family, from their arrival in America in the 17th century to their contributions to the nation's political, social, and cultural landscape. We meet William Polk, a young boy enthralled by his grandmother's tales of family lore, stories that spark in him a passion for history and a deep appreciation for the legacy of his ancestors.

As William grows up, he witnesses firsthand the Polk family's unwavering commitment to their country. He sees them fight for justice and equality during the Civil Rights Movement, and he learns about their contributions to American history, from the presidency of James K. Polk to the fight for workers' rights during the Industrial Revolution.

Through the Polk family's triumphs and tragedies, joys and sorrows, readers gain a deeper understanding of the American experience. They learn about the struggles and sacrifices that have shaped this great nation, and they are inspired by the courage and resilience of those who dared to dream big and never gave up.

The Polk family saga is a powerful reminder of the values that have made America great: family, community, and the pursuit of happiness. It is a story that will resonate with readers of all ages, leaving them with a renewed appreciation for the nation's rich history and the indomitable spirit of its people.

This book is a must-read for anyone interested in American history, family sagas, or stories of courage and resilience. It is a powerful reminder of the values that have made America great and the importance of fighting for what you believe in, no matter the odds.

The Vietnam War could have been called a comedy of errors if the consequences weren’t so deadly and tragic. In 1951, while war was raging in Korea, the United States began signing defense pacts with nations in the Pacific, intending to create alliances that would contain the spread of Communism. As the Korean War was winding down, America joined the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization, pledging to defend several nations in the region from Communist aggression. One of those nations was South Vietnam.
Before the Vietnam War, most Americans would have been hard pressed to locate Vietnam on a map. South Vietnamese President Diem’s regime was extremely unpopular, and war broke out between Communist North Vietnam and South Vietnam around the end of the 1950s. Kennedy’s administration tried to prop up the South Vietnamese with training and assistance, but the South Vietnamese military was feeble. A month before his death, Kennedy signed a presidential directive withdrawing 1,000 American personnel, and shortly after Kennedy’s assassination, new President Lyndon B. Johnson reversed course, instead opting to expand American assistance to South Vietnam.
Over the next few years, the American military commitment to South Vietnam grew dramatically, and the war effort became both deeper and more complex. The strategy included parallel efforts to strengthen the economic and political foundations of the South Vietnamese regime, to root out the Viet Cong guerrilla insurgency in the south, combat the more conventional North Vietnamese Army (NVA) near the Demilitarized Zone between north and south, and bomb military and industrial targets in North Vietnam itself. In public, American military officials and members of the Johnson administration stressed their tactical successes and offered rosy predictions.

    Louisa May Alcott's Love For...

Louisa May Alcott´s Little Women is the author´s love song for German culture and literature. In the novel, there are many moments when the characters make references to German literature, and Jo's love interest professor Bhaer is also based on Alcott's favourite writer, the German poet Goethe. When Friedrich helps Jo when she struggles writing to Weekly Volcano, we can see her influences from Goethe, Friedrich recommends Jo read Shakespeare and study characters like Goethe would have done. It is also remarkable that Alcott gives Jo a German love interest because German immigrants were widely discriminated in 19th century America, but in Concord where Alcott's resided there was a full-blown German epidemic with people rushing to buy German books and anything that came from Germany.
In the very first chapter of Little Women Jo wishes for a copy of Undine and Sintram as a Christmas present. Undine and Sintram is a collection of Scandinavian and Germanic fables written by French-German author Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué. This book appears again in the last Little Women book, Jo´s boys. Marches help the poor Hummel family who has immigrated from Germany. Beth and Marmee are especially close to them. Beth catches terrible scarlet fever, but the Marches never blame the Hummels. Epidemic diseases were rather common back then and Louisa always writes about the Hummels with great sympathy. In the chapter "Camp Lawrence" John Brooke translates a German song for Meg and reads her parts from "Mary Stuart", a play that was written by German poet and philosopher Friedrich Schiller. At Meg´s and John´s wedding, Laurie suggests that they dance as the Germans do.

God gave Us a Special Needs...

    Lloyd C. Darby Ph.D

I wrote this book because I wanted the world to know the story of my special needs son Lloyd C. Darby lll. Affectionately known as DJ, which stands for Darby Junior. When people triumph over their circumstances as my wife and I have, there are usually hidden lessons others can benefit from contained within the events. However, if we don’t share our stories with the world, no one will ever hear about them. That’s why it is so important to share our successes, and failures, to let others know they are not alone. Rather, a part of a bigger picture that is so significant, their message alone has the power to set people free. Whether through books, video, television, or the radio, we must communicate our thoughts and promote ideas and principles that produce a better society for all people. Due to the painful memories, and recreating various parts of my true story, I needed to make this book simple to understand. It is my sincere effort that this information can be absorbed quickly and to the point.
This is the story of a child who was born against the odds, raised against the odds, and lives against the odds. Although he is my son, he is also my hero and role model. It is on his behalf that I write his story and for all the parents in the world with so-called “special needs” children. I have truly learned the powers who labeled these children “special needs” focus more on their inabilities rather than their abilities. More importantly, life is about victories, achievements, successes, opportunities, pride, honor, shortcomings, and never-ending loving hearts. When it comes to these qualities, special needs children possess them naturally.
