Synopsis

The Habsburg Imperium was a major power in Europe for centuries, ruling over a vast and diverse realm that included Austria, Hungary, Bohemia, and parts of Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the Habsburg Imperium, from its origins in the thirteenth century to its collapse in 1918.

The book explores the Habsburgs' rise to power, their complex relationship with the Holy Roman Empire, and their role in the religious wars that ravaged Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It also examines the Habsburg Imperium's cultural and intellectual contributions, including its role in the development of the Renaissance and the Baroque.

However, the Habsburg Imperium was not without its problems. Its vast size and diversity made it difficult to govern, and it was often plagued by financial difficulties. The empire was also constantly threatened by its powerful neighbors, including France, Prussia, and the Ottoman Empire. In the eighteenth century, the Habsburg Imperium began to decline, as it lost territory to its rivals and was weakened by a series of wars.

Finally, in 1918, the Habsburg Imperium collapsed in the wake of World War I. The empire was divided into a number of smaller states, and the Habsburg dynasty was forced to abdicate. Despite its demise, the Habsburg Imperium left a lasting legacy on Europe, both in terms of its political and cultural contributions.

This book is essential reading for anyone interested in European history. It provides a comprehensive and accessible overview of the Habsburg Imperium, from its origins to its fall. The book is written in a clear and engaging style, and it is packed with fascinating details and insights.

The great fire of London is lodged in the collective consciousness, and like other notorious disasters in history, continues to captivate the imaginations of people today. When preparing to write this astounding book, acclaimed author Neil Hanson discovered that there were many facets of the tragedy that remained unexplored. This enthralling, often horrifying narrative is the unforgettable culmination of his studies.

In 1666, London is still recovering from its latest bouts with the bubonic plague, and memories of the Black Death are still fresh. When a small fire breaks out in a downtown bakery, it spreads with alarming speed through the crowded city streets, from one desiccated wooden structure to the next. Becoming a conflagration of epic proportions, the firestorm rages like a dragon and ultimately razes half the city.

Though the fire itself may have been hell on earth, the smoldering aftermath plumbs the depths of depravity like few moments in human history.

Welcome to the world of Buddhism!

Americans and others in the West have certain expectations and images that come to mind when the word "Buddhist" comes up. Most people have seen the Dalai Lama on the news or in magazines, and he has almost become synonymous with Buddhism in general. The truth is that by far, the majority of the world's Buddhists are not bald Asian men in orange robes. Buddhists look like you or me— just normal people who try to fit the ideas developed by Buddha into a normal modern life.

What follows is a compilation of the very foundations of Buddhism. There are many sects or denominations of Buddhism, and they are all very distinctive, but the material included here is common to all of them. Whether you want to practice Buddhism as a religion or as a philosophy, whether you want to experience Zen or Tibetan, whether you want to pray or meditate, you'll need to understand the basics.

    There are five short chapters:

    What is Buddhism?
    Who was the Buddha?
    The Four Noble Truths
    The Eightfold Path
    The Five Precepts

    What is not included?

You will not find any religious doctrine, prayers, or rituals beyond some very basic ideas. The Buddha set down some very clear philosophical ideas, and those ideas were later expanded into may varied religious traditions. You will also find very little jargon and only a few foreign words.

Note: This short introductory booklet is made of excerpts from “The Five-Minute Buddhist.”
