Synopsis

In the captivating pages of this book, we embark on a journey into the shadowy realm of pathological gambling, where the allure of chance and the pursuit of fortune can lead to devastating consequences. Through the eyes of individuals whose lives have been indelibly marked by gambling addiction, we witness the insidious progression from innocent pastime to uncontrollable obsession.

With compelling storytelling and unwavering honesty, this book delves into the psychological, social, and economic factors that contribute to gambling addiction. We explore the thrill-seeking tendencies and impulsive behaviors that often underlie compulsive gambling, as well as the neurochemical mechanisms that reinforce addictive patterns. We also examine the role of genetics, trauma, and cultural influences in the development of gambling problems.

Furthermore, this book sheds light on the devastating impact that gambling addiction can have on individuals, families, and communities. We witness the erosion of relationships, the accumulation of debt, and the erosion of mental and physical health. We also explore the economic costs of gambling addiction, both for individuals and for society as a whole.

Beyond its unflinching portrayal of the challenges faced by those struggling with gambling addiction, this book also offers a beacon of hope. We examine the various treatment options available, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and support groups. We also discuss the importance of relapse prevention and the role of family and friends in the recovery process.

Ultimately, this book serves as an urgent call to action, urging policymakers, healthcare professionals, and society at large to recognize the devastating impact of gambling addiction and to take concerted steps to address this growing public health concern. Through a combination of education, prevention, and treatment, we can illuminate the path towards recovery and empower individuals to break free from the shackles of gambling addiction.

This book is an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of gambling addiction, its far-reaching consequences, and the available paths to recovery. It is a powerful resource for individuals struggling with gambling problems, their loved ones, healthcare professionals, and policymakers alike.

If I asked you how many Robin Hoods you could name, what would the list be like?

I’m sure you’d reel off a whole host of famous actors, like Errol Flynn, Douglas Fairbanks, Kevin Costner, Michael Praed, Sean Connery, and John Cleese, to name but six. All of these men have played the role of Robin Hood in various television and movie adaptations of the famous story.

But that’s not what I meant.

I’m talking about Robin Hood himself; the ever popular and ever noble outlaw hero who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor, with his trusty bow and arrow as his weapon of choice. The leader of a band of like-minded outlaws, christened the Merry Men (‘merry’ – in this instance – derives from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning ‘illustrious, famous, great, mighty’, etc. In the same sense, Hood means ‘hoodlum, thief, thug, criminal’). Robin Hood was a champion for justice, fighting against the oppression of the evil Sheriff of Nottingham and his right-hand man Guy of Gisbourne, all under the watchful eye of the wicked Prince John (who had been placed on the throne as a substitute monarch whilst his brother, King Richard The Lionheart, fought in the Crusades).

Of course, that was only one Robin Hood. Very much like the various incarnations that have appeared in classic novels, Hollywood movies, television series, radio serials and theatrical plays, Robin Hood was more than one man.

In today’s hyper-connected world, privacy is often taken for granted—or worse, dismissed as an outdated concern. We live in an era where our personal data is treated as currency, constantly collected, analyzed, and monetized by corporations, governments, and cybercriminals alike. Every search query, online purchase, and social media interaction contributes to a vast digital profile that shapes how businesses market to us, how financial institutions assess us, and even how law enforcement monitors us. But how much do we really understand about who is collecting our data and for what purpose?

Most people assume that their digital activities are relatively private—secured by passwords, encryption, and privacy settings. Yet, the reality is far more unsettling. Companies track our browsing habits even when we’re in “incognito” mode, apps request permissions far beyond what’s necessary, and smart devices listen in on conversations, all in the name of “improving user experience.” Governments worldwide deploy mass surveillance programs under the justification of national security, while hackers exploit weak security measures to access personal and financial information. Even when we willingly share details about our lives, such as through social media, we rarely consider the long-term consequences of this exposure.

Perhaps the most alarming aspect of digital privacy erosion is how seamlessly it has integrated into our daily lives. From social media giants like Facebook and TikTok to search engines like Google, nearly every digital service we rely on operates under a business model that thrives on harvesting user data. The more these companies know about us—our habits, preferences, and even emotions—the better they can predict and manipulate our behavior. This is the foundation of surveillance capitalism, an industry built on turning our personal lives into profit.

This intimate and unflinching memoir explores Wen's struggle to survive, and confronts the belief that people don't change. Through appalling abuse and neglect, Wen finds a way to a very different kind of life, embodying resilience, healing and transformation.
The story is woven through with the intriguing themes of Wen's life. With humility, understanding and beauty, she delves into the plight of a stammerer, the unbreakable bonds of twinship, and her body's need to dissociate.
Wen's evocative imagery transports the reader from the red dirt of Broome, to the streets of India and the mists of Scotland. She crosses the continents, often by bicycle, committing to radical political action and spiritual exploration. These pursuits help forge her growing character.
After settling in Scotland, she uncovers buried memories of a terrifying Queensland childhood shrouded in threats and lies, and of her father's links to a Brisbane paedophile gang.
'To the outside world, we were the picture-perfect family. No one would have believed me, even if I could have found the words.'
She doesn't recoil from facing the truth of her childhood or the unconscionable harm her parents perpetuated.
Wen tells how she found her way to her heart and her true gender self. In doing so, she celebrates the power of kindness. Stammering Against Truth is a powerful and empowering book that proves past traumas need not define our futures.

In Nightmare Fuel, Nina Nesseth explores the strange and often unexpected science of fear through the lenses of psychology and physiology. How do horror films get under our skin? And why do we keep coming back for more?
