Beschreibung

In an era of increasing division and polarization, it is more important than ever to understand and strengthen our civic identity. Civic identity is the sense of belonging and connection that individuals feel to their community and nation. It is shaped by a variety of factors, including shared history, culture, values, and institutions.

A strong civic identity is essential for a healthy and vibrant democracy. It is the foundation of social cohesion and trust, and it is a bulwark against the forces of division and polarization. When individuals feel connected to their community and nation, they are more likely to be engaged in civic life, to vote, and to hold their leaders accountable.

However, civic identity is under threat in many parts of the world. The rise of populism and nationalism has led to a resurgence of divisive rhetoric and policies. This has contributed to a decline in trust in government and other institutions, and it has made it more difficult for people to come together and work towards common goals.

This book offers a comprehensive and accessible exploration of civic identity. It examines the historical and philosophical foundations of civic identity, the challenges facing civic identity in the 21st century, and the importance of civic identity for a healthy democracy. The book also provides a number of concrete recommendations for how to strengthen civic identity and build more cohesive and inclusive communities.

This book is essential reading for anyone who is interested in understanding the challenges facing our democracy and who wants to work towards building a more just and equitable society. It is a call to action for all of us to embrace our civic identity and to work together to create a better future for our communities and our nation.

Under President Xi Jinping, China's global ambitions have taken a dangerous new turn. Bullying and intimidation have replaced diplomacy. Trade and investment, even big-spending tourists and students, have been weaponised. Beijing has strengthened its alliance with Vladimir Putin, supporting Russia's aggression in Ukraine, and brooks no criticism of its own flagrant human rights violations against the Uyghur population in western China.
Leaders in the West say they don't want a cold war with China, but it's a little late for that. Beijing is already waging a more complex, broader and more dangerous cold war than the old one with the Soviet Union. And it is intensifying.
This thought-provoking and alarming book examines this new cold war's many fronts - from Taiwan and the South China Sea to the Indian frontier, the Arctic and cyberspace. In doing so it proclaims the clear and sobering message that we must open our eyes to the reality of China's rise and its ruthless bid for global dominance.

    Wild Democracy - Anarchy Courage...

Wild Democracy calls for a more anarchic, more courageous democracy. This is an ethic for people who know the rights they hold, and who struggle to rule themselves. This is an ethic for unfinished revolutions; an ethic for those who will not be mastered. This is an ethic for those who hold fast to the rights they have by nature.

Democracy is always a risky business; full of promise and danger. The promise is the freedom to rule ourselves. The danger is fear: fear of the unknown, fear of the unruly, fear of one another, fear of anarchy. The fearful look for a strong hand, a powerful leader, a protector, a gun. Anarchy leads to courage, to self-reliance, self-discipline, self-rule, and solidarity. Anarchy is the nursery of democracy. It is not anarchy we have to fear, it is authoritarianism.

We have been taught to see the people as a problem to be managed. Anne Norton sees them as a source of strength. Anarchic democracy grows wild: springing from the everyday actions of ordinary human beings.

Liberalism and conservatism alike have turned away from the democratic, to institutions, rules, and regulations. Anne Norton turns to anarchic people who practice democratic ethics.

    Economic Recovery Program

On February 18, 1981, Reagan laid out his economic recovery program before a Joint Session of Congress. Reagan had previously outlined his recovery program in an Oval Office address on February 5, 1981, in which he displayed a dollar bill and 36 cents to show how inflation had reduced the value of a dollar since 1960.
Reagan made a further plea for enactment of his recovery program on April 28, 1981, following the assassination attempt on his life. Many economists credit this recovery program for reducing the inflation rate and igniting one of the longest and most robust economic expansions in U.S. history.
Reagan paints a grim picture of inflation, the national debt, and lagging productivity plaguing the economy. $41.4 billion of reduced spending is proposed with no reduction for “the poverty stricken, the disabled, the elderly, [and] all those with true need”. Subsidies of the synthetic fuel program, the Export-Import Bank, and the Economic Development Administration are targeted.
Block grants to states are proposed, along with changes to Medicaid, the space program, the Postal Service, and the Department of Energy. To counter the Soviet Union’s military build-up, defense is the one department with an increased budget.
A 10-percent tax cut for individual taxpayers is proposed for each of the next 3 years, along with increased depreciation allowances to allow business the capital needed to modernize.
We “must come to grips with inefficient and burdensome regulations, eliminate those we can and reform the others.”
To reduce inflation and interest rates, we need to slow the growth of our money supply.
This is our proposal for America’s new beginning. “I'm here tonight to ask you to join me in making it our plan.” Government “must not be used to regulate the economy or bring about social change.”

Off Script - An Advance Man’s...

From a former White House presidential events production director comes an illuminating journey through the most catastrophic scenes of political stagecraft since the “Age of Optics” in 1988.
The responsibility of being a public figure is no walk in the park—the world highlights politicians’ every mistake. “Image collapse” can befall anyone whose carefully cultivated persona is analyzed by, and filtered through, intermediaries in the broadcast booths of cable news networks or behind the photo desks of newspapers, magazines, and today’s host of digital platforms.
As someone who orchestrates television- and photo-ready moments involving important political figures, Josh King has unique experience working with the reputations of public figures. In Off Script, King leads listeners through an entertaining behind-the-scenes journey through the most catastrophic scenes of political stagecraft since the dawn of the “Age of Optics” in 1988. Listeners might recall these moments as simple cases of bad luck, but King argues that they were actually symptomatic of something deeper in how we view our leaders.
We tour nearly thirty years of history to set the stage for the Age of Optics and then turn to the Obama administration and what King calls the “Vanilla Presidency.” King shows how Barack Obama began his term in office as more guarded and more protective of the presidential persona than anyone in history, and as we arrive at the election of 2016 and beyond, we have to wonder: Will our future president follow Obama’s example? If so, how will that influence the relationship between our nation’s citizens and their leader?
