The show explores themes of social class, relationships, and identity in the high-class world of Newport Beach. The O.C. was a pop cultural phenomenon during its first season. The show was known for its music, which featured indie rock and guest performances. Ratings declined after the first season leading to its cancellation in 2007. The series had a mix of melodrama and comedy and utilized meta-fictional humor.

  The show's title, "O.C.", is an initialism for Orange County, the Southern California location where the series is set. Despite the show being set in Newport Beach, California, much of the filming took place in the Manhattan Beach, Los Angeles County region due to financial penalties for filming outside the studio zone.
