Sinopse

Journey into the depths of space and time as we unravel the mysteries of Nemesis, a cosmic companion star that holds the key to Earth's past, present, and future. Prepare to be captivated by this enthralling exploration of celestial phenomena, mass extinctions, and the resilience of life on our planet.

In this comprehensive and thought-provoking book, we delve into the scientific evidence surrounding the Nemesis hypothesis, a theory that proposes a cyclical pattern of cometary bombardment triggered by the gravitational influence of a hidden companion star. Discover the compelling arguments in favor of this theory and the controversies that have swirled around it for decades.

Through vivid storytelling and accessible explanations, we transport you to the scenes of past cosmic impacts, revealing the devastating effects these events have had on Earth's ecosystems and the evolution of life. From the Chicxulub impact that wiped out the dinosaurs to the Tunguska event in Siberia, these cataclysmic collisions have shaped our planet's history in profound ways.

But the Nemesis hypothesis doesn't just focus on the past. It also raises unsettling questions about the future. Could a future encounter with Nemesis trigger another mass extinction event? And if so, what can we do to mitigate this cosmic threat? We explore these questions with rigor and clarity, examining potential strategies for planetary defense and the challenges we face in safeguarding our planet from celestial hazards.

Beyond the scientific exploration, we also explore the cultural, philosophical, and existential implications of the Nemesis hypothesis. What does it mean to live in a universe where cosmic forces can shape our destiny? How do we grapple with the fragility of life and the vastness of time and space? These are just some of the profound questions that this book tackles, inviting readers to contemplate their place in the cosmos and the interconnectedness of all life.

With its captivating narrative, thought-provoking insights, and stunning visuals, this book is a must-read for anyone fascinated by astronomy, Earth's history, and the future of our planet. Join us on this cosmic journey as we confront the celestial menace and uncover the secrets that lie hidden in the darkness beyond our world.

On February 4, 1974, members of the Symbionese Liberation Army kidnapped nineteen-year-old newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst from her Berkeley, California, apartment. Desperate to find her, the police called physicist Russell Targ and Pat Price, a psychic retired police commissioner. As Price turned the pages of the police mug book filled with hundreds of photos, suddenly he pointed to one of them and announced, “That’s the ringleader.” The man was Donald DeFreeze, who was indeed subsequently so identified. Price also described the type and location of the kidnap car, enabling the police to find it within minutes. That remarkable event is one reason Targ believes in ESP. Another occurred when his group made $120,000 by forecasting for nine weeks in a row the changes in the silver-commodity futures market.

As a scientist, Targ demands proof. His experience is based on two decades of investigations at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI), which he cofounded with physicist Harold Puthoff in 1972. This twenty-million-dollar program launched during the Cold War was supported by the CIA, NASA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and Army and Air Force Intelligence. The experiments they conducted routinely presented results that could have happened by chance less than once in a million. Targ describes four types of experiments: remote viewing, distant mental influence, whole-field isolation, and precognition and retrocausality. He also presents evidence for survival after death; explains how ESP works based on the Buddhist/Hindu view of ourselves as nonlocal, eternal awareness; discusses the ethics of exercising psychic abilities; and shows us how to explore ESP ourselves. “I am convinced,” Targ says, “that most people can learn to move from their ordinary mind to one not obstructed by conventional barriers of space and time. Who would not want to try that?”

    Off-Earth - Ethical Questions...

Can we do better in space than we've done here on Earth?

We've pinpointed the destination, refined the technology, designed the habitat. Are we forgetting something? A timely reminder that it's not just rocket science, this book explores the all-too-human issues raised by the prospect of settling in outer space. Accordingly, her work highlights the complex ethical challenges that accompany any other-worldly venture—questions about the environment, labor rights, and medical ethics, among others.

Any such venture, Nesvold contends, must be made on behalf of all humanity, with global input and collaboration. Off-Earth thus includes historical and contemporary examples from outside the dominant Western/US, abled, and privileged narrative of the space industry. Nesvold calls on experts in ethics, sociology, history, social justice, and law to launch a hopeful conversation about the potential ethical pitfalls of becoming a multi-planet species—and, ideally, to shed light on similar problems we presently face here on Earth.

Space settlement is rapidly becoming ever more likely. Will it look like the utopian vision of Star Trek? Or the dark future of Star Wars? Nesvold challenges us to decide.

The classic guide to living amid wild, unspoiled nature by a legendary outdoorsman and an experienced survivalist.     A longtime Army colonel, Townsend Whelen later became renowned for his passion for wilderness exploration and his skills as a rifleman. Bradford Angier, inspired by Henry David Thoreau and possessing the same adventurous spirit, advocated for back-to-the-land living and wrote extensively on outdoor survival skills. In this book, they collaborate to offer a guide to discovering the inexpressible thrill of primitive country, the workshop of nature, and the appreciation of wilderness technique.    Unspoiled regions possess a quiet beauty and peace—no artificiality, no crowds, all woods uncut. There is unbounded satisfaction and pleasure in successfully meeting the challenge of the wilderness. Colonel Townsend Whelen and Bradford Angier have combined their vast experiences camping and bivouacking to produce the perfect guide to peace and utter freedom. If the wilderness calls you, they invite you to join them and talk about how to live in it. They explain what from their experience they found to be the best ways of entering wild and unspoiled country, of finding their way through it with the right knowledge and equipment, and of living there in comfort and safety. On Your Own in the Wilderness is their explicit direction on how to escape to an earthly paradise.
