“A book about the highly strange San Franciscans Primus has been overdue for years, so Greg Prato’s excellent oral history of the band is welcome—doubly so, given that the key band members, Les Claypool, Larry Lalonde and Tim Alexander, are involved. . . . Great stuff.” —Record Collector MagazineUsually when the “alternative rock revolution” of the early 1990s is discussed, Nirvana’s Nevermind is credited as the recording that led the charge. Yet there were several earlier albums that helped pave the way, including the Pixies’s Doolittle, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’s Mother’s Milk, Jane’s Addiction’s Nothing’s Shocking, and especially Primus’s 1991 album Sailing the Seas of Cheese.

Compiled from nearly fifty all-original interviews—including Primus members past and present and many more fellow musicians—conducted by journalist/author Greg Prato. This book is sure to appeal to longtime fans of the band, as well as admirers of the musicians interviewed for the book.

With a career spanning over fifty years, Tom Waits remains one of rock’s great enigmas; a chameleon-like survivor who, like Bob Dylan and Neil Young, has achieved long-term success while retaining cult credibility and outsider mystique.  Lowside of the Road, by Barney Hoskyns, offers a unique, affectionate and penetrating portrait of Waits spanning from Closing Time to Orphans, and beyond.  Based on extensive research and deep critical insight, Hoskyns' definitive account of Waits' life and work is an outstanding exploration of this notoriously private artist and performer.

The shocking, tell-all memoir from '90s popstar and heart-throb formerly known as KavanaBorn in Manchester in 1977, Anthony Kavanagh's rise to fame was stratospheric, scoring a record deal at the age of just eighteen and winning the much-coveted Smash Hits Male Artist of the Year Award in 1997, all the while achieving top ten hits, appearing on countless magazine covers, performing on Top of the Pops and gigging alongside the Spice Girls. The Ancestral Puebloans, once known as the Anasazi, were among the earliest inhabitants of the American Southwest, establishing complex societies that thrived in the arid landscapes of present-day Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. Their origins trace back thousands of years to nomadic hunter-gatherers who gradually transitioned into settled agricultural communities. Archaeological evidence suggests that the ancestors of the Pueblo people descended from early groups who migrated into the region over 10,000 years ago, following game and adapting to the changing environment.
As these early populations settled, they developed strategies to cope with the harsh desert conditions. By around 2000 BCE, they had begun cultivating maize, a crop introduced from Mesoamerica, which allowed for more stable food sources and led to the formation of permanent villages. The adoption of agriculture marked a significant shift in their way of life, as they built storage pits for surplus grain and started domesticating turkeys for additional sustenance. Over time, these settlements expanded, and small familial clusters evolved into larger communities.
The Basketmaker period, beginning around 1200 BCE, represents a crucial stage in Ancestral Puebloan development. During this era, people lived in semi-subterranean pit houses, circular structures dug into the earth and covered with wooden frames and mud plaster. These early homes provided insulation against the region’s extreme temperatures. The Basketmakers were also known for their exceptional weaving and basketry skills, crafting intricate containers and sandals from yucca fibers and other natural materials. Pottery, which became a defining feature of Puebloan culture, gradually emerged during the later stages of this period, allowing for improved food storage and cooking techniques.
