Beschreibung

In the annals of history, few nations have experienced a rise and fall as dramatic as that of Spain in the 17th century. Once the foremost power in Europe, Spain's empire spanned the globe, its wealth was legendary, and its culture was envied. But by the century's end, Spain had fallen from grace, its empire in ruins, its economy in tatters, and its people disillusioned.

What caused this precipitous decline? Historians have debated this question for centuries, offering a multitude of explanations. Some point to the disastrous reign of Philip IV, whose policies led to economic collapse and military defeats. Others blame the rigid social hierarchy and the stifling influence of the Catholic Church. Still others argue that Spain's decline was inevitable, as newer, more dynamic nations rose to challenge its supremacy.

Whatever the cause, the story of Spain's decline in the 17th century is a fascinating and instructive one, offering valuable lessons about the fragility of power, the importance of innovation, and the resilience of the human spirit.

In this comprehensive and engaging book, we take a journey through the many factors that contributed to Spain's downfall. We examine the political, economic, social, and cultural forces that shaped this tumultuous period, and we consider the legacy of Spain's decline, tracing its impact on the nation's subsequent history.

Along the way, we meet a cast of colorful characters, from ambitious monarchs to scheming courtiers to ordinary people struggling to survive in a time of upheaval. We witness firsthand the events that led to Spain's downfall, from the Thirty Years' War to the War of the Spanish Succession. And we gain a deeper understanding of a pivotal period in Spanish history, and the complex interplay of forces that can lead to the rise and fall of empires.

Whether you are a history buff, a student of politics, or simply someone interested in the human drama of a nation in decline, this book is sure to captivate and inform. With its vivid storytelling and insightful analysis, it offers a fresh perspective on one of the most fascinating periods in European history.

"What Rama says once he carries out; there is no looking back.” Rama to Kaikeyi “Only the timid and the weak leave things to destiny but the strong never bank on destiny or luck.” Lakshmana to RamaThe epic poem, by Maharishi Valmiki Muni, narrates the life of Lord Rama, a legendary prince of Ayodhya city in the kingdom of Kosala. The epic follows his fourteen-year exile to the forest urged by his father King Dasharatha, on the request of Rama's stepmother Kaikeyi. He traveled across forests in the Indian subcontinent with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. Rama endured the kidnapping of Sita by Ravana – the demon king of Lanka, which resulted in a great war; and Rama's eventual return to Ayodhya to be crowned king amidst jubilation and celebration. The Ramayana is one of the ancient epics in world literature consisting of nearly 24,000 verses. It is considered to be the Adi-kavya (first poem) depicting the duties of relationships, portraying ideal characters like the ideal father, ideal servant, ideal brother, ideal husband and ideal king. The Ramayana was an important influence on later Sanskrit poetry and Vedic life and culture. There are many versions of Ramayana in Indian languages, besides Buddhist, Sikh, and Jain adaptations. There are also Cambodian (Reamker), Indonesian, Filipino, Thai (Ramakien), Lao, Burmese and Malay versions of the iconic tale.

I go with the wind, people of Orphalese, but not down into emptiness; And if this day is not a fulfilment of your needs and my love, then let it be a promise till another day.”

The beloved prophet Almustafa (meaning “The Chosen One”) has lived within the city walls of Orphalese for twelve years. He has walked among the people and formed a deep connection to the place, but he knows this is not where he ultimately belongs. On the seventh day of Ielool (“the month of reaping”), Almustafa climbs a hill beyond the boundaries of the city wall and gazes out across the misty sea. He is filled with joy as he catches sight of the ship that has come to free him from exile. As he bids farewell to the people of Orphalese, Almustafa speaks with them on the topics closest to their hearts. His series of sermons form the 28 prose poems of this book.

The Prophet is a work of fiction, written by Lebanese-American artist, poet, and philosopher Kahlil Gibran. Gibran was a key figure in Arabic literary modernist movement, which spanned the first half of the twentieth century. As a product of his culturally-rich upbringing, Gibran’s work beautifully blends religious traditions and philosophies from around the world.

Stand Watie’s life connects the traditional Cherokee homeland in Tennessee and Georgia, the fight within the tribe over leaving for the West or staying on their homeland and trying to resist, and the Trail of Tears. At the same time, his life also includes the ongoing split between mixed-blood and full-blood Cherokee in the Cherokee Nation, and the chaos of Indian Territory during the Civil War.
On the surface, Indian Territory was peaceful and fairly prosperous, but old resentments simmered under the surface. The most dangerous of these was in the Cherokee Nation. Following the Cherokee removal, the leaders of the faction of the tribe that had actually signed the Treaty of New Echota suffered violence. There had been a law that giving away Cherokee land was punishable by death, and several of the leaders who signed the treaty were murdered. Stand Watie was one of the signers, and he barely escaped, but one of his brothers was executed.
The Principal Chief was John Ross. He and his faction managed to retain political control of the Cherokee tribe, but there was lasting enmity between the Watie and Ross factions of the tribe. In a broad sense, the signers of the hated treaty were mixed-blood Cherokee, and the resistance had been led by full-bloods. Stand Watie headed the mixed-blood faction and John Ross the full-blood faction. Ironically, John Ross himself was mixed-blood and Watie was a full-blood, but regardless, this tribal split had important ramifications for the Cherokee in the coming war.
Like the country as a whole, the Cherokee Nation was split over the question of slavery, and with an estimated 100 slaves owned, Watie was the biggest native slaveholder in the region. At the start of the war, Watie was commissioned as a colonel in Confederate service and later as a brigadier general. His 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles Regiment fought more engagements than any other Confederate unit west of the Mississippi River.
