  The Middle East, a region at the crossroads of Africa, Asia, and Europe, has a complex and multifaceted history that has shaped its modern political and social dynamics. Understanding the historical background of this area is essential for grasping the causes of its current conflicts, including the Gulf Wars. The region’s significance goes beyond its geographical location; it is home to some of the world’s oldest civilizations, such as the Sumerians, Egyptians, and Persians, which laid the foundation for much of human civilization, particularly in terms of writing, law, and governance. 
  The historical trajectory of the Middle East has been deeply influenced by the rise and fall of empires. In ancient times, the region was dominated by powerful empires such as the Persian Empire and the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire, in particular, played a central role in shaping the political landscape of the Middle East for over 400 years. Its collapse after World War I marked the beginning of a new era, characterized by the creation of modern nation-states and the imposition of arbitrary borders by Western powers. The dismantling of the Ottoman Empire led to the carving up of its territories under the Sykes-Picot Agreement, a secret 1916 accord between Britain and France that laid the groundwork for many of the modern-day conflicts in the region. 
  The aftermath of World War I also saw the emergence of European mandates in the Middle East. The British and French took control of territories such as Iraq, Palestine, and Syria, which created tensions among various ethnic and religious groups. The artificial borders drawn by colonial powers failed to account for the region's complex social fabric, where multiple ethnicities, religions, and cultures coexisted. This imposition of external governance set the stage for future conflicts, as regional communities struggled for autonomy and independence.

The film highlighted the startling relevance of a riveting trial more than half a century ago when a black revolutionary, Black Panther Party co-founder Huey Newton, faced execution for the death of a white policeman -- with totally unexpected results. This audiobook was narrated by Rua, the same actor who voiced Huey Newton in the documentary. It allows listeners to take a ringside seat at the case that transformed the traditional all white male "jury of one's peers" to a jury truly drawn from a cross-section of the community, including women and minorities. The book also provides a rare look behind the scenes into life-or-death jury deliberations and features comments from key trial participants and observers. Pioneering television journalist Belva Davis vividly described the participants in that historic trial: "The Newton trial cast of characters would be hard to put together for a Hollywood film --- the defense attorney, the prosecutor, the jury foreman, the makeup of the jury, Newton himself." Huey's older brother Melvin Newton captured the essence of that historic trial, inspiring the book's title: "The prosecution represents the state -- the People of California vs. Huey Newton was putting Huey Newton on trial. As it turned out, [my brother] Huey put the United States on trial."

  The Heavy Water War - Beating...

  During the course of the Second World War, the Allies mounted a series of attempts to prevent Germany from manufacturing heavy water utilising hydroelectric plants in occupied Norway. These efforts comprised a mix of bomber and Commando raids. The overall aim was to stop Nazi Germany building a nuclear bomb. In fact, Hitler was never as close as the Allies thought, but the idea that his regime could construct and deploy such a device was the ultimate doomsday scenario, one that would have tilted the balance in favour of the Nazis. The mere threat might have been sufficient to force a negotiated peace with the perception of a Nazi bomb hanging over the world like a nuclear-powered sword of Damocles. 
   
  Production, and therefore the Allied target, centred on the Vemork Power Station standing by the Rjukan Waterfall at Telemark. A series of daring raids – Operations Grouse, Freshman and Gunnerside – neutralised the plant’s capacity. In Operation Freshman, every single glider-borne paratrooper was either captured or killed. In February 1943, a force of SOE-trained Norwegian Commandos succeeded in sabotaging the plant’s production capacity. Further manufacturing effort was abandoned, and the Nazis attempted to spirit away the heavy water they had on the ferry SF Hydro. The Norwegians managed to sink the vessel in the deep waters of Lake Tinn. Using primary source material and published on the 80th anniversary of the sinking of the Hydro, The Heavy Water War tells a story of extraordinary courage and endurance. The stakes in any special forces raid in history have never been higher.
