A deeply personal account of life as a carer and a call to support those who care for others
'Ed Davey wants to rewrite British politics – not with the language of crisis, but that of care. … He offers something rare – moral clarity rooted in lived experience.' Guardian
'Caring is how we know we’re alive.
The good in all of us has been shaped by care. Hold a mirror up to that, and we’ll realise our potential.'
Care is the thread that runs through Ed’s life. Aged only four, Ed lost his father. When his mother also became ill with cancer, Ed and his brothers nursed her at home until she died when Ed was just 15. That formative experience was one of the main inspirations in seeking election, and with it the opportunity to take action. Now, he and his wife care for their son John, who has severe physical and learning disabilities, as well as raising their younger daughter. So Ed has real knowledge of the emotional, physical and financial challenges faced by legions of carers in Britain today.
Why I Care is both a deeply personal story, drawing on Ed’s own experiences, and a book that reflects the stories of people everywhere to offer a vision of change. Shedding light on the often-invisible world of carers, he calls for society, our government and our institutions to recognise, support, and lift up the silent carers who form the backbone of our communities.
This isn’t just Ed’s story. It's the story of millions.
In Why I Care, Sir Ed Davey, a prominent political figure, delves into the pressing issues of health and welfare in our society. His autobiography is not just a personal narrative, but a call to action for policy changes and better public services.

The Irish Potato Famine, one of the most devastating events in Irish history, did not occur in a vacuum but was the result of a complex web of agricultural, social, and political factors that had been building for centuries. Understanding the roots of the famine requires a deep dive into the role of potatoes in Irish agriculture, the socio-economic conditions of 19th-century Ireland, and the historical context of British colonial policies that shaped the lives of the Irish people.
The potato had become the cornerstone of Irish agriculture by the early 19th century. Its ability to grow in Ireland's challenging soil and its high nutritional value made it the ideal crop for the majority of the population. Potatoes provided an inexpensive, calorie-dense food source that sustained not only the rural laborers but also their families. By the 1840s, the potato was so integrated into Irish life that it made up the bulk of the diet for the rural poor, with many families relying solely on it for sustenance. This dependency created a fragile agricultural system, highly vulnerable to disease or crop failure.
The socio-economic conditions in Ireland at the time were dire. Most of the population lived in poverty, working as tenant farmers for English or Anglo-Irish landlords. The vast majority of land was concentrated in the hands of a small elite, and the system of land tenure kept most Irish peasants in a state of near-perpetual debt. This imbalance exacerbated the poverty faced by the rural poor, many of whom were already struggling to make ends meet. As a result, when the potato crop began to fail, the majority of Irish farmers had little in reserve and were left with few options for survival.

Efficient and excellent writing relies on one crucial pillar: note-taking. This skill is often underdeveloped or totally missing in writers, whether they are professionals or students. In How to Take Smart Notes (2017), Sönke Ahrens details the slip-box note-taking method known as the Zettelkasten. This technique, adapted to both written and digital notes, shifts the focus from memorization and searching for notes to developing ideas through the note-taking and writing process, which becomes part of the thought process. The slip-box system allows writers to easily store and retrieve relevant notes while enhancing their creativity in finding topics to tackle.
