Synopsis

In the annals of American literature, the voices of women poets have long been overlooked and undervalued. This book seeks to rectify that oversight by shining a light on the remarkable contributions of 19th-century American women poets.

Within these pages, you'll encounter a diverse chorus of voices that defied convention and shattered societal norms. These women, pioneers in their own right, used their poetic gifts to challenge the status quo, advocate for social change, and celebrate the unique experiences of women.

Their poetry, a tapestry of emotions and insights, explored the complexities of love, loss, and longing. It painted vivid portraits of the American landscape, capturing the beauty of its vast wilderness and the bustling energy of its growing cities. It delved into the depths of identity, race, and class, giving voice to the marginalized and challenging prevailing social norms.

These women poets were not merely chroniclers of their time; they were agents of change. They used their words to champion the causes they held dear, from the abolition of slavery to the fight for women's suffrage. Their poetry was a powerful force for social justice, inspiring and mobilizing others to join their cause.

The legacy of these women poets is undeniable. Their words continue to resonate with readers today, offering solace, inspiration, and a deeper understanding of the human condition. This book is an invitation to rediscover these extraordinary voices and celebrate their enduring impact on American literature and culture.

With its rich collection of poems and insightful commentary, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in American history, literature, or women's studies. It is a celebration of the power of poetry to transform lives and shape history.

They would be better dead, they said, than set adrift upon the world. But set adrift they were - thousands of them, their communities destroyed, their homes demolished and burned.
Such were the Sutherland Clearances, an extraordinary episode, involving the deliberate depopulation of much of a Scottish county. What was done in the course of that episode was planned and carried out by a small group of men and one woman. Most of those involved wrote a great deal about their actions, intentions and feelings, and much of it has been preserved. There are no equivalent collections of material from those whose communities ceased to exist. Their feelings and fears are harder to access, but they are by no means irrecoverable.
In this book James Hunter tells the story of the Sutherland Clearances. His researches took him to archives in Scotland, England and Canada, to the now deserted straths of Sutherland, to the frozen shores of Hudson Bay. The result is a gripping, moving, definitive account of a people's struggle for survival in the face of tragedy and disaster which includes experiences which have not featured in any previous such account.

  • Pompey the Great: The Life and Legacy of the Legendary Roman General Who Lost the Civil War to Julius Caesar - cover

Thanks to Caesar’s victory in the civil war, Pompey is mostly remembered not for being one of Rome’s greatest generals, but for being defeated by Caesar and then ignominiously murdered after he fled to Egypt, where the boy pharaoh Ptolemy XIII decapitated Pompey and offered his head to Caesar as a gift. Although Caesar was there chasing Pompey’s men, he quickly became involved in Egypt’s own civil war. As a consequence of Ptolemy’s barbarity, Caesar impulsively decided to side with his sister Cleopatra in her bid for the throne of Egypt, escalating what was rapidly becoming an all-out civil war.
Of course, before the civil war, Pompey was one of the most powerful men in Rome. Gnaeus Pompeius was born on September 29, 106 BCE and went on to become regarded as one of the greatest statesmen and generals of the late Roman Republic. He was given the title “the Great” by his troops in Africa in 82 BCE and assumed the cognomen Magnus after 81 BCE. Pompey belonged to the senatorial nobility, the Pompeii, and the family had its first consul in 141 BCE. He loved all things Greek and spoke the language fluently. He gained much of his early military experience working on the staff of his father Pompeius Strabo, and the family base was in Picenum in eastern Italy. Strabo had significantly increased the family’s clients when he was consul in 88 BCE.
In time, Pompey played a role in defeating many of Rome’s enemies across the world, from Africa to Spain, and he even helped put down Spartacus’ uprising. He had built his military power and acumen by participating in Rome’s previous civil war between Gaius Marius and Sulla, sharpening both his political and military skills, and he used them to great effect for decades during one of ancient Rome’s most chaotic – and important – periods. Perhaps just as importantly, following his successes in Africa, he demanded a triumph and refused to disband his army.

**Wage-Labour and Capital & Value, Price, and Profit** by Karl Marx is a compelling introduction to Marxist economic theory, combining two of his most influential works. In *Wage-Labour and Capital*, Marx explores the relationship between labor and capital, illuminating how the commodification of labor under capitalism generates profit for capitalists at the expense of workers. In *Value, Price, and Profit*, Marx delves deeper into the mechanisms of capitalist economies, discussing the labor theory of value, the creation of surplus value, and the inherent exploitation of wage labor. Together, these texts offer a powerful critique of capitalism's structure and dynamics, providing readers with foundational insights into Marxist economics and the social implications of labor exploitation. This edition is an essential resource for anyone seeking to understand the theories that have shaped modern political and economic thought.
