Synopsis

In this provocative and thought-provoking book, Pasquale De Marco challenges the conventional wisdom about progress. Pasquale De Marco argues that the idea of progress is a myth, and that it is actually leading us down a dangerous path.

Pasquale De Marco traces the history of the idea of progress from its origins in the Enlightenment to its current crisis. Pasquale De Marco shows how the belief in progress has been used to justify everything from colonialism to environmental destruction. Pasquale De Marco also examines the costs of progress, both in terms of the environment and in terms of human well-being.

Pasquale De Marco argues that we need to rethink our understanding of progress. We need to move away from the idea that progress is inevitable and that it is always good. We need to develop a more sustainable and just vision of progress, one that is based on the values of equality, justice, and environmental sustainability.

This book is a wake-up call. It is a call to action. It is time for us to change our course and to create a better future for ourselves and for generations to come.

Pasquale De Marco is a leading scholar in the field of social and political thought. Pasquale De Marco has written extensively about the idea of progress and its impact on society. Pasquale De Marco is a passionate advocate for a more just and sustainable world.

This book is essential reading for anyone who is concerned about the future of our planet and the well-being of humanity. It is a book that will challenge your assumptions and change the way you think about progress.

The Mexican Revolution was a great revolution that included a series of army local battles instead of a single united struggle. It destroyed the Federal Force and changed it with an innovative army, changing Mexican civilization and governance at the same time It also culminated in the adoption of a new constitution that included the revolutionaries' ideal visions.
In spite of the fact that President Porfirio Daz's (from about 1880 to 1911) rule had grown progressively out of favor over the prior 31 years, there was no indicator that a transformation would break out in the year 1910.
Daz was not able to establish a regulated resolution to governmental succession, which led to a power struggle between opposing elites, and between elites and the middle classes, which sometimes included the "masses."
There were agrarian uprisings, most significantly in Morelos under Emiliano Zapata.
In this book, we will learn more about those.

For bell hooks, the best cultural criticism sees no need to separate politics from the pleasure of reading. Yearning collects together some of hooks's classic and early pieces of cultural criticism from the '80s. Addressing topics like pedagogy, postmodernism, and politics, hooks examines a variety of cultural artifacts, from Spike Lee's film Do the Right Thing and Wim Wenders's film Wings of Desire to the writings of Zora Neale Hurston and Toni Morrison. The result is a poignant collection of essays which, like all of hooks's work, is above all else concerned with transforming oppressive structures of domination.

The Eurasian Century - Hot Wars...

We often think of the modern era as the age of American power. In reality, we're living in a long, violent Eurasian century. That giant, resource-rich landmass possesses the bulk of the global population, industrial might, and potential military power. Eurasia is a strategic prize without equal—which is why the world has been roiled, reshaped, and nearly destroyed by clashes over the supercontinent.

Since the early twentieth century, autocratic powers have aspired for dominance by seizing commanding positions in the world's strategic heartland. Offshore sea powers, namely the United Kingdom and America, have sought to make the world safe for democracy by keeping Eurasia in balance. America's rivalries with China, Russia, and Iran are the next round in this geopolitical game. If this new authoritarian axis succeeds in enacting a radically revised international order, America and other democracies will be vulnerable and insecure.

Hal Brands argues that a better understanding of Eurasia's strategic geography can illuminate the contours of rivalry and conflict in today's world. The Eurasian Century explains how revolutions in technology and warfare, and the rise of toxic ideologies of conquest, made Eurasia the center of twentieth-century geopolitics—with pressing implications for the struggles that will define the twenty-first.

Before the arrival of Europeans, New Zealand, or Aotearoa, was inhabited solely by the Māori people, who had arrived from Polynesia over a thousand years earlier. Their ancestors navigated vast distances across the Pacific Ocean, using their advanced knowledge of stars, winds, and ocean currents. They eventually settled in Aotearoa, forming distinct tribal communities known as iwi, each with its own territory, social structures, and traditions.
The Māori society was organized around iwi (tribes), hapū (sub-tribes), and whānau (families). Each iwi had a paramount chief, or rangatira, who was responsible for making decisions that affected the entire tribe. The rangatira was supported by a council of elders, or kaumatua, who provided guidance based on wisdom and experience. The hapū, made up of extended families, was the primary unit of Māori society, with a strong emphasis on kinship and collective responsibility.
Māori were deeply connected to the land, or whenua, and believed that their ancestors, the atua, or gods, imbued the earth, sea, and sky with sacred energy. This connection formed the foundation of Māori spiritual beliefs, which revolved around whakapapa (genealogy), mana (spiritual power or authority), and tapu (sacredness). Their spiritual worldview tied their identity to the land and natural resources, and they saw themselves as stewards, responsible for the care and preservation of the environment.
