  Joan Didion (December 5, 1934 - December 23, 2021), born in Sacramento, California, was an American author, screenwriter, and journalist. Her writing during the 1960s through the late 1970s engaged audiences in the realities of the counterculture of the 1960s, the Hollywood lifestyle, and the history and culture of California. She is considered one of the pioneers of New Journalism, along with Gay Talese, Truman Capote, Norman Mailer, Hunter S. This auspicious beginning more than two centuries ago helps explain why the U.S. remains a magnet for opportunity seekers, students, entrepreneurs, dissidents, and persecuted believers.Yet for decades now, America’s federal government has been underperforming. Social Security and Medicare face looming insolvency. The federal government’s “war on poverty” has failed to “end poverty” and arguably made it worse. In 2012, the United States Postal Service lost more money than the nation spent on the State Department, and Amtrak has lost money every year since being created in 1971. How can an enduring institution, so thoughtfully crafted, now produce such poor results?The federal government has grown so much because it serves a new and different vision, American Progressivism. American Progressives believed that democratically elected, public-minded federal politicians and employees could use federal programs to solve the nation’s greatest problems in a way no other American institution could. This idea justified the federal government’s massive expansion: today, the federal government runs over 1,500 programs and employs over 5% of the U.S. workforce.Yet federal results do not match Progressive expectations. Three key problems – “windfall politics”, “the government surcharge”, and “complexity failure” – overlooked by American Progressives explain the federal government’s consistent failures. American Progressive’s rosy-eyed view of human nature and political institutions have not been borne out by the evidence.In an era of substantial political fermentation and debate, rediscovering and re-applying American Republicanism represents the best path forward for the United States. The federal government should retain many necessary responsibilities but turn over those where it has failed.

  Schizophrenia is a complex and often misunderstood mental health disorder that affects a person’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It is characterized by episodes of psychosis, which can include hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, and impaired social functioning. While schizophrenia is a chronic condition, with proper treatment and support, many individuals can manage their symptoms and lead fulfilling lives. 
  Schizophrenia does not manifest in the same way for everyone. Some individuals may experience severe and persistent symptoms, while others may have periods of stability with occasional relapses. The disorder typically emerges in late adolescence or early adulthood, although it can develop later in life. Early detection and intervention are crucial in improving long-term outcomes. 
  There are several subtypes of schizophrenia, each presenting with different symptom patterns. Paranoid schizophrenia, once considered a distinct type, involves intense delusions and auditory hallucinations, often revolving around themes of persecution. Disorganized schizophrenia is marked by disorganized speech, erratic behavior, and difficulty with daily activities. Catatonic schizophrenia presents with extreme motor disturbances, including periods of excessive movement or complete immobility. While these classifications have evolved in recent psychiatric frameworks, they still help in understanding the diverse ways schizophrenia can manifest.

  Slomo Venezia was born into a poor Jewish-Italian community living in Thessaloniki, Greece. At first, the occupying Italians protected his family; but when the Germans invaded, the Venezias were deported to Auschwitz. His mother and sisters disappeared on arrival, and he learned, at first with disbelief, that they had almost certainly been gassed. Given the chance to earn a little extra bread, he agreed to become a 'Sonderkommando', without realizing what this entailed. He soon found himself a member of the 'special unit' responsible for removing the corpses from the gas chambers and burning their bodies. 
   
   
   
  Dispassionately, he details the grim round of daily tasks, evokes the terror inspired by the man in charge of the crematoria, 'Angel of Death' Otto Moll, and recounts the attempts made by some of the prisoners to escape, including the revolt of October 1944. 
   
   
   
  It is usual to imagine that none of those who went into the gas chambers at Auschwitz ever emerged to tell their tale—but, as a member of a 'Sonderkommando', Shlomo Venezia was given this horrific privilege. He knew that, having witnessed the unspeakable, he in turn would probably be eliminated by the SS in case he ever told his tale. He survived: this is his story.
