Synopsis

In this poignant and thought-provoking book, we embark on a journey to explore the depths of love, friendship, and beauty, three fundamental aspects of human existence that shape our lives, inspire our actions, and leave an enduring legacy upon the world.

Love, in its myriad forms, is a force that binds us together, transcends boundaries, and has the power to transform lives. From the tender affection between parent and child to the passionate devotion of romantic love, love is a universal language that speaks to the heart. It is a source of joy, comfort, and strength, yet it can also be a source of pain and heartache. As we navigate the complexities of love, we learn about ourselves, others, and the true meaning of connection.

Friendship, a bond forged through shared experiences, laughter, and mutual support, is a precious gift. True friends are those who stand by our side through thick and thin, offering unwavering loyalty and understanding. They challenge us to grow, inspire us to be our best selves, and make life's journey richer and more meaningful. Friendship is a treasure to be cherished and nurtured, for it is in the company of those we hold dear that we truly feel alive.

Beauty, in its countless manifestations, captivates our senses, stirs our emotions, and elevates our souls. We find beauty in the grandeur of nature, the harmony of music, the eloquence of poetry, and the kindness of human spirit. Beauty has the power to inspire awe, wonder, and a profound sense of gratitude for the gift of life. As we seek beauty in all its forms, we open ourselves up to new perspectives, cultivate a deeper appreciation for the world around us, and discover hidden dimensions of our own being.

Through the exploration of love, friendship, and beauty, we come to a deeper understanding of ourselves, our place in the world, and the interconnectedness of all things. These fundamental aspects of human experience are not merely abstract concepts; they are the very essence of what it means to be alive. Embracing them fully, we unlock the potential for a life filled with meaning, purpose, and joy.

This book is an invitation to reflect on the profound significance of love, friendship, and beauty in our lives. With warmth, wisdom, and gentle guidance, it encourages us to cultivate these essential qualities, deepen our connections with others, and live lives of greater fulfillment and purpose.

There are countless examples of battles that take place in wars after a peace treaty is signed. The last battle of the Civil War was a skirmish in Texas that Confederate forces won, nearly a month after Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. As fate would have it, the last fighting of the Civil War took place two days after Confederate President Jefferson Davis had been captured in Georgia
It’s certainly rare for the most famous battle of a war to take place after the peace treaty is signed, but luckily for Andrew Jackson, the War of 1812 was that unique exception. Less than a year after his victory in the Battle of Horseshoe Creek, Jackson led his forces into a more important battle at the Battle of New Orleans. The British hoped to grab as much of the land on the western frontier as they could, especially New Orleans, which had a prominent position on the Mississippi River for trading. With more than 8,000 soldiers aboard a British fleet sailing in from Jamaica in early January 1815, the attack on New Orleans promised to be a significant one, while Jackson’s men defended New Orleans with about half that number. This went on despite the fact that the two sides had signed the Treaty of Ghent on Christmas Eve 1814, which was supposed to end the war.
Despite the fact the French & Indian War had recently concluded, Pontiac led the first major attack of Pontiac’s War in May 1763, when he and 300 of his men attacked Fort Detroit in what is now the city by the same name. Unfortunately for his cause, Pontiac failed to gauge just how strong the British presence there was, and his attack was quickly repelled. On the other hand, he was not a man who gave up easily, so instead of retreating, he and his warriors would lay siege to the British stronghold. In the days that followed, word spread of his efforts, and in short order nearly 1,000 men from various tribes in the area had joined him.

The last volume of Chesterton's collected essays, Gathered from the London Mercury, the New Witness, and the Illustrated London News, it is the only volume from after WWI, and is most serious, philosophical, and socially direct collection.
"The problem is not so much Prohibition with a large P as prohibition with a small one. I mean, I am interested not so much in liquor as in liberty. I want to know on what principle the prohibitionists are proceeding in this case, and how they think it applies to any other case. And I cannot for the life of me make out. They…do not attack liquor; they do quite simply attack liberty. I mean that they are satisfied with saying about this liberty what can obviously be said about any liberty – that it can be, and is, abominably abused. If that had been a final objection to any form of freedom, there never would have been any form of freedom."
"So long as we combine ceaseless and often reckless scientific speculation with rapid and often random social reform, the result must inevitably be not anarchy but ever-increasing tyranny. There must be a ceaseless and almost mechanical multiplication of things forbidden. The resolution to cure all the ills that flesh is heir to, combined with the guesswork about all possible ills that flesh and nerve and brain-cell may be heir to – these two things conducted simultaneously must inevitably spread a sort of panic of prohibition. Scientific imagination and social reform between them will quite logically and almost legitimately have made us slaves."

In this beautifully illustrated book that's Song of Achilles meets Secret Life of Trees, readers will discover the plants cultivated by the Greek Gods–many of which can still be experimented with today–for a myriad of uses.  In Greek mythology, plants were used for tools, intoxication, warfare, food, medicine, magic, and rituals. When Prometheus stole fire from the Olympian gods and gave it to mankind, he hid it in a stalk of giant fennel. Ancient Greeks waiting to question the oracles were given cannabis as part of their cleansing rituals. A quince fruit started the Trojan war. The goddess Demeter was so distraught when Hades kidnapped her daughter that she caused winter to blanket the earth, killing all plants. Mythic Plants focuses on how the ancient Greeks used plants in their lives and loves and conquests—some of which we can still use. Includes tips throughout for bringing these ancient plants into your garden.

In April 1998, legendary southern jam band Widespread Panic held a free open-air record release show in downtown Athens, Georgia, its home base. No one involved could have known that the predicted crowd of twenty thousand would prove to be nearly five times that size. The show, now known as "Panic in the Streets," went on to become a cult favorite of fans and a decisive moment in Athens music history. This event holds the record for the world's largest record release party, but the story of how the it came to be has not been told until now.

Widespread Panic in the Streets of Athens, Georgia places listeners at the historic event, using in-depth investigation and interviews with the band, city officials, and "Spread Heads" who were there. Music journalist Gordon Lamb's narrative takes the listener from conception to aftermath and uncovers the local controversies and efforts that nearly stopped the show from happening altogether.

This deeply researched and richly sourced book follows every stage of the concert's development from the spark of an idea to approximately one hundred thousand people packing the streets of a legendary music town. Taking us back to 1990s Athens through vibrant, on-the-scene writing, Lamb gives us the story of a band on the verge of greatness and a town reckoning with its significant place in music history.
