Beschreibung

Francisco Franco was one of the most controversial figures in 20th-century history. He ruled Spain for nearly four decades, leaving a lasting impact on the country and its people.

This comprehensive biography examines Franco's life and rule from his early years to his death in 1975. It explores his military career, his political ideology, and the impact of his regime on Spain.

Franco's rise to power was fueled by the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), in which he led the Nationalist forces to victory over the Republican government. After the war, he established a dictatorship that lasted until his death.

Franco's regime was characterized by repression, censorship, and economic stagnation. He suppressed all forms of dissent, including political opposition, regional autonomy movements, and cultural expression. He also imposed strict censorship on the media and the arts.

Despite the repressive nature of his regime, Franco also oversaw a period of economic development and modernization. He implemented a series of economic reforms that led to rapid industrial growth and urbanization. However, this economic growth came at a high price, as it was accompanied by widespread social inequality and environmental degradation.

Franco's legacy remains a subject of debate in Spain today. Some view him as a strong leader who saved Spain from communism and brought order to the country after the chaos of the Civil War. Others condemn him as a dictator who suppressed democracy and human rights.

This book offers a balanced and objective assessment of Franco's life and rule. It is essential reading for anyone interested in Spanish history, politics, and culture.

For centuries, Denmark "punched above its weight" and was a major player on the European stage. Many know about the Danish Vikings and their voyages of conquest and discovery, but Denmark is more than just those medieval raiders and traders, even though interest in their adventures is at an all-time high today.
Denmark became the first Scandinavian country to convert to Christianity, though this was likely as much to protect themselves from Christian kingdoms to the south and to increase their trade with Christian nations than any love for Christian beliefs.
Denmark has been at peace since WWII, but its position between the North and Baltic Seas makes it an important part of NATO, allowing it to once more "punch above its weight." But despite its location, Denmark has managed to not only remain at peace but is today ranked as one of the happiest nations on Earth.
You will discover many astounding facts about Denmark's history in this book. Discover the answer to fascinating questions like the following:

    - Does Denmark really appear in the top three of the world's "happiest" countries?
    - Were the Danish Vikings only interested in conquest? And what were their relations like with Europe before the Viking Age?
    - Who was Cnut the Great, and why was he so important in the history of countries like England, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden?
    - Who the current Danish royal family is descended from? (Hint: it is not a Dane!)
    - How and when did Denmark establish the wide-ranging social safety net it is so well-known for today?
    - What role did Germany play in Denmark losing its status as an offensive military power? What was life like for Danish Jews during WWII?
You'll find these answers and many more in Captivating History's History of Denmark!

I hope that you will find the information helpful, useful and profitable.
More people are writing now than at any time in the history of civilisation. This is mainly down to education and more free time. The generation of the parents of the Baby Boomers was the first generation of mass readers – certainly in the West, and probably globally. Their parents could read, usually, but had no tradition of reading books. Instead, they read mostly newspapers. Their children had a better education, and picked up the reading habit from their parents. They were also encouraged to read books at school. The first generation where this happened.
Their children, the post World War II Baby Boomers, continued the progression and became avid readers. In those days, not so long ago, say, between seventy and thirty years ago, people wrote letters by hand. It was a long, but very pleasant, personal experience. Then the home computer, email, and the Internet began to spread among the masses, and pen and ink gradually became replaced with message boards, posting to forums and email.
Before this point, writing had been a special event for most people... thank you letters, postcards, birthday cards, and the odd personal letter home or to a friend. The home computer made it easy to dash off a quick note to someone. It took far less time to write and deliver, or have delivered by the post office. Suddenly, everyone began writing and posting to family, friends, strangers and even enemies. A barrier had been lifted – barriers of time and formality, perhaps.
A high percentage of those Boomers, compared with other generations, have gone on to write some kind of book, or ebook. So, the Boomers are the first generation of working-class writers, and their parents were the first working-class generation of readers.

The first account of the Allied navies' vital contribution to the success of the D-Day landings and the Normandy campaign

The Allied liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe is one of the most widely recognized events of modern history. The assault phase, Operation Neptune, began with the D-Day landings in Normandy—one of the most complex amphibious operations in history, involving 7,000 ships and nearly 200,000 men. But despite this immense effort, the wider naval campaign has been broadly forgotten.

Nick Hewitt draws on fascinating new material to describe the violent sea battle which mirrored the fighting on land, and the complex campaign at sea which enabled the Allied assault. Aboard ships ranging from frail plywood landing craft to sleek destroyers, sailors were active combatants in the operation of June 1944, and had worked tirelessly to secure the Seine Bay in the months preceding it. They fought battles against German submarines, aircraft, and warships, and maintained careful watch to keep control of the English Channel.

Hewitt recounts these sailors' stories for the first time—and shows how, without their efforts, D-Day would have failed.
