Efforts at colorblindness and antiracism have not been very effective in addressing racial tensions in the United States.

Colorblindness ignores the realities of race and the history of injustice. On the other hand, antiracism centers racial concerns and in so doing often alienates people who need to be involved in the process. Sociologist George Yancey offers an alternative approach to racial relations where all parties contribute and are mutually accountable to one another for societal well-being. He provides empirical rationale for how collaborative conversations in a mutual accountability model can reduce racial division. History and societal complexity mean that different participants may have different kinds of responsibility, but all are involved in seeking the common good for all to thrive. Avoiding unilateral decisions that close off dialogue, Yancey casts a vision for moving beyond racial alienation toward a lifestyle and movement of collaborative conversation and mutuality.

Andrew Jackson's rise to prominence began in the backwoods of the Carolinas, where he was born in 1767 to Irish immigrant parents. Orphaned at a young age and shaped by the violence of the Revolutionary War, Jackson's early years were filled with hardship and struggle. These formative experiences instilled in him a fierce independence and an unwavering sense of personal honor, traits that would define his character for the rest of his life. Largely self-taught and known for his fiery temper, Jackson developed a reputation for toughness, earning the nickname “Old Hickory” from soldiers who served under him. Despite limited formal education, he pursued a career in law and eventually moved westward to Tennessee, where he would find opportunity and recognition.
Jackson's military career was the first major platform that launched him into the national spotlight. During the War of 1812, he was appointed a general in the U.S. Army and quickly demonstrated his capabilities as a leader. His most celebrated moment came at the Battle of New Orleans in January 1815. Although the battle technically took place after the war had officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent, news had not yet reached American forces. Jackson’s troops, composed of militia, freedmen, Native Americans, and even pirates, faced a professional British army. Against the odds, they achieved a decisive victory, inflicting heavy casualties while suffering minimal losses. This triumph turned Jackson into a national hero and a symbol of American resilience and patriotism. The victory solidified his image as a man of action who could defend the country against foreign threats.

This recording contains four addresses of Felix Adler (1851-1933) concerning spirituality from the perspective of Ethical Culture, an educational and religious movement founded and first led by Adler, based on the belief that living in accordance with ethical principles is central to a meaningful and fulfilling life. – Lee Smalley “Spirituality is morality carried out to the finish….The ultimate end (of spirituality) itself is to elicit worth in others, and, by so doing, in one's self. The indispensable condition of this attitude is to ascribe worth to every human being before even we observe it, to cast as it were a mantle of glory over him, to take toward every fellow human being the expectant attitude, to seek the worth in him until we find it.

Felix Adler was a German American professor of political and social ethics, rationalist, influential lecturer on euthanasia, religious leader, and social reformer.

A detailed chronicle of a significant opening battle in the Anglo-Zulu War: "The Zulu attack on Rorke's Drift thrillingly retold" (Richard Holmes).

On January 22, 1879, the British Army in South Africa was swept aside by the seemingly unstoppable Zulu warriors at the Battle of Isandlwana. Nearby, at a remote outpost on the Buffalo River, a single company of the 24th Regiment and a few dozen recuperating hospital patients were passing a hot, monotonous day. It seemed certain that the Rorke's Drift detachment would share the same fate. And yet, against incredible odds, the British managed to defend their station.

In this riveting history, Colonel Snook brings the insights of a military professional to bear on this fateful encounter at the start of Anglo-Zulu War. It is an extraordinary tale—a victory largely achieved by the sheer bloody-mindedness of the British infantryman. Recounting in detail how the Zulu attack unfolded, Snook demonstrates how 150 men achieved their improbable victory. Snook then describes the remainder of the war, from the recovery of the lost Queen's Colour of the 24th Regiment to the climactic charge of the 17th Lancers at Ulundi. We return to Isandlwana to consider culpability, and learn of the often tragic fates of many of the war's participants.
