Sinopse

In the vast expanse of post-Soviet Russia, a land of contrasts and contradictions, a journey of transformation unfolds. This book takes readers on an immersive exploration of Russia's political, economic, social, and cultural landscapes, revealing the challenges and opportunities it faces in the 21st century.

Through the eyes of ordinary citizens, oligarchs, and political leaders, we witness the country's struggle to find its identity amidst the ruins of the Soviet Union. We delve into the complexities of Russia's transition from communism to capitalism, examining the economic turmoil, social upheaval, and political instability that have marked this period. Yet, amidst the chaos, we also discover resilience, hope, and a determination to build a better future.

We explore Russia's complex relationship with the West, from the Cold War era to the present day. We examine the country's role in global affairs, from its involvement in conflicts in Ukraine and Syria to its growing assertiveness on the international stage. We also investigate Russia's domestic challenges, including the rise of nationalism, the struggle for human rights, and the ongoing fight against corruption.

This book is a journey through a land of both great promise and great peril. It is a story of a nation grappling with its past, confronting its present, and shaping its future. Through vivid storytelling and in-depth analysis, this book provides a comprehensive understanding of post-Soviet Russia, a country that continues to fascinate and intrigue the world.

In these pages, readers will find a deeper appreciation for the complexities of Russia, its people, and its culture. They will gain a new perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing the country as it navigates the 21st century. This book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand one of the most important countries in the world today.

During a business trip to India, the author made an unexpected discovery, a discovery that was to turn his understanding of our world upside down. He was so shaken by what he learned that he felt unable to simply walk away. More often than not, when people are confronted by a major issue with global implications you will hear them say “What can I do? I’m only one person.” Mark decided that such a response would be unacceptable and he made up his mind to get involved. Rather than just sit on the sidelines, in 2014 Mark took decisive action. As a result, Mark’s inner humanitarian was awakened and the lives of tens of thousands of underprivileged children in India have been changed for the better. This highly inspiring, witty, cleverly narrated book tells the story of that awakening and its impact.

Perhaps not surprisingly given how advanced they were in comparison to contemporaries, the Egyptians invented one of the first writing systems ever, and for centuries, people thought these ancient texts held some sort of secret, be it aliens, advanced technology lost to the world, or mystical cures for all of the world’s ills. Even the ancient Egyptians saw their writing systems as full of mystery and hidden knowledge - according to Egyptian mythology, writing was invented by the ibis-headed god Thoth, the most intellectual of the gods.
Along with Egypt, the cultural and geographic region known as Mesopotamia was home to some of the world’s earliest civilizations and also the first known form of writing, cuneiform. Many different ethnic groups vied for power in ancient Mesopotamia over the course of antiquity, spanning about 3,000 years, and many of them spoke different languages. Despite these differences, the people in Mesopotamia shared many cultural attributes, including similar religious practices, a common art and architecture style, and a shared use of the cuneiform script. The languages spoken by the peoples of Mesopotamia were as diverse as the many ethnic groups, but as those groups asserted their military, economic, and cultural power over the other groups, two languages became dominant in the region: Sumerian and Akkadian.
The greatest irony of the lack of primary source information about the Phoenicians is that their language and writing happened to be the most influential in antiquity, a byproduct of their voyages and colonization, which spread their language across the Mediterranean. It was the forerunner to the Greek alphabet, from which the Latin alphabet was directly derived, and thus most of the written languages of the modern West.
