The Trail of Tears was a harrowing series of forced relocations that took place between 1830 and 1850, impacting approximately 60,000 American Indians from the so-called "Five Civilized Tribes." These tribes, which included the Cherokee, Muscogee (Creek), Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw nations, were driven from their ancestral lands in the Southeastern United States to designated areas west of the Mississippi River, an event orchestrated by the United States government. The forced removal was the culmination of a decades-long process of ethnic cleansing that occurred gradually, as tribes were stripped of their homelands, cultural identities, and livelihoods. Alongside them, thousands of African American slaves owned by these tribes were also relocated, compounding the tragedy.
The Indian Removal Act, passed in 1830, paved the way for the systematic relocation of these tribes. It was during this period that the Cherokee removal in 1838—often considered the most infamous and final forced relocation east of the Mississippi—occurred. This event was largely triggered by the discovery of gold in Dahlonega, Georgia, in 1828, which sparked the Georgia Gold Rush. The prospect of wealth led state officials and settlers to covet Cherokee land, ultimately resulting in the forced march to the newly designated "Indian Territory" in what is now Oklahoma.

    The Socratic Dialogues -...

    Plato

The influence of Plato, his Dialogues and his ‘Academy’, cast a long shadow. Around 35 Dialogues, almost all featuring Socrates as the principal figure, are generally ascribed to Plato and form one of the most important threads in Western philosophy These four Dialogues may fall into the ‘Attributed Texts’ category, but they are of sufficient interest to warrant study in our time and when set against the principal canon.

The recording opens with Alcibiades I. Socrates’ interlocuter is well known as a young, charismatic figure of the time, and appears in the Symposium and Protagoras. The subject under discussion is justice and injustice. Socrates questions the over-confident Alcibiades about his understanding of these issues, which is crucial for someone about to play an active role in public life. It is the longest Dialogue of the four.

Hippias is another young man. A Sophist, brimming with the confidence of youth to the extent of being vain and boastful. He appears in two Dialogues on this recording, the Lesser Hippias and the Greater Hippias. The Lesser Hippias is a witty and lively conversation in which Hippias is keen to display his abilities only to be shaken by patient questioning by the astute Socrates. The Greater Hippias, a discussion about beauty, contains some interesting elements, while also showing how the form became diluted in the hands of lesser followers of Plato.

The final Dialogue, Menexenus is a special case. It was an important form in Athenian society and this is a rare surviving example. It has been included here in a new recording so it can be listened to in the context of ‘Attributed Dialogues’, rather than a fully accepted work by Plato. The background to each Dialogue is set by Benjamin Jowett. David Rintoul continues his persuasive characterisation of the masterful Socrates.

The Bible often remembers and celebrates the names of great men of God. People like Abraham, Moses, David, Paul, Isaiah, and Elijah are well-known for their important roles in the story of God's people. These men are honored for their faith, leadership, and the key parts they played in God's plan.
However, as we delve into the Scriptures, we often overlook the equally significant contributions of women of God. The Bible, while rich with the stories of these men, also holds accounts of extraordinary women whose strength, wisdom, and faithfulness were crucial to the unfolding of God's narrative. For instance, Sarah's faith in God's promise of a son, Ruth's loyalty to her mother-in-law, and Mary's acceptance of her role in God's plan. Yet, these women often remain in the background, their stories less frequently told, their virtues less regularly celebrated.
This book is a necessary contribution to Christian literature, as it celebrates the strength and wisdom of prominent women in the Bible. In the pages you are about to read, you will get a glimpse into the lives of these extraordinary women. Their faith and actions were significant and played pivotal roles in shaping the Biblical narrative. The book is organized chronologically, starting with the Old Testament and moving through to the New Testament, to provide a comprehensive view of these women's contributions.
This book celebrates these 30 women, each embodying unique qualities and virtues that can guide and inspire us in our modern lives. Their stories offer timeless lessons on resilience, faith, leadership, and profound love, demonstrating that the challenges and virtues they faced are just as relevant and applicable in our lives today. Whether it is Hannah's unwavering faith, Abigail's strategic wisdom, or Ruth's selfless loyalty, these women provide powerful examples of how to live with purpose and integrity in our contemporary world.

With The Tiger and the Cage, Bolden uses her own experience as the starting point for a journey through the institutional misogyny of Western medicine—from a history of labeling women “hysterical” and parading them as curiosities to a lack of information on causes or cures for endometriosis, despite more than a century of documented cases. Recounting botched surgeries and dire side effects from pharmaceuticals affecting her and countless others, Bolden speaks to the ways people are often failed by the official narratives of institutions meant to protect them.
Bolden also interrogates a narrative commonly imposed on menstruating bodies: the expected story arc of marriage and children. She interrogates her body as a painful site she must mentally escape and a countdown she hopes to beat by having a child before a hysterectomy. Only later does she find language and acceptance for her asexality and the life she needs to lead. Through all its gripping, devastating, and beautiful threads, The Tiger and the Cage says what Bolden and so many like her have needed to hear: I see you, and I believe you.
