Synopsis

In the heart of Renaissance England, a time of great intellectual and social upheaval, the concept of equity underwent a profound transformation. This book explores this fascinating journey, delving into the literary works, legal documents, and historical records of the era to uncover the intricate relationship between equity and the cultural and intellectual landscape of the period.

At the center of our exploration are the writings of Thomas More and Edmund Spenser, two literary luminaries who grappled with the complexities of equity in their respective works, Utopia and The Faerie Queene. Through a careful analysis of these texts, we shed light on the shifting perceptions of equity during the Renaissance, revealing its multifaceted nature and its profound influence on society.

We examine the ways in which equity was understood and applied in the legal system, tracing its evolution from its roots in ancient Greek philosophy to its application in the courts of Renaissance England. We also investigate the social and political implications of equity, considering its impact on issues of justice, equality, and the distribution of power.

Furthermore, we delve into the literary representation of equity, tracing its development through various genres and forms. We analyze how equity served as a theme and a tool in the hands of writers, shaping their narratives and offering insights into the social and ethical concerns of the time.

This book is a comprehensive exploration of equity in Renaissance England, offering a fresh perspective on this pivotal concept and its enduring legacy. It is an essential read for scholars of law, literature, and history, as well as anyone interested in the intellectual and cultural currents that shaped the modern world.

This program is read by the author and includes a bonus conversation with the author and Paola Ramos, a Vice News journalist, MSNBC Contributor, and author of Finding Latinx.“A love letter to our people—full of fury and passion."— José Olivarez, award-winning poet and author of Citizen Illegal"If you could take Rodolfo Gonzales epic poem 'I Am Joaquin' and explain it through compelling, personal narrative in twenty-first century America, You Sound Like A White Girl would be it.”— Joaquin CastroBestselling author Julissa Arce brings readers a powerful polemic against the myth that assimilation leads to happiness and belonging for immigrants in America. Instead, she calls for a celebration of our uniqueness, our origins, our heritage, and the beauty of the differences that make us Americans.“You sound like a white girl.” These were the words spoken to Julissa by a high school crush as she struggled to find her place in America. As a brown immigrant from Mexico, assimilation had been demanded of her since the moment she set foot in San Antonio, Texas, in 1994. She’d spent so much time getting rid of her accent so no one could tell English was her second language that in that moment she felt those words—you sound like a white girl?—were a compliment. As a child, she didn’t yet understand that assimilating to “American” culture really meant imitating “white” America—that sounding like a white girl was a racist idea meant to tame her, change her, and make her small. She ran the race, completing each stage, but never quite fit in, until she stopped running altogether. In this dual polemic and manifesto, Julissa dives into and tears apart the lie that assimilation leads to belonging. She combs through history and her own story to break down this myth, arguing that assimilation is a moving finish line designed to keep Black and brown Americans and immigrants chasing racist American ideals. She talks about the Lie of Success, the Lie of Legality, the Lie of Whiteness, and the Lie of English—each promising that if you obtain these things, you will reach acceptance and won’t be an outsider anymore. Julissa deftly argues that these demands leave her and those like her in a purgatory—neither able to secure the power and belonging within whiteness nor find it in the community and cultures whiteness demands immigrants and people of color leave behind. In You Sound Like a White Girl, Julissa offers a bold new promise: Belonging only comes through celebrating yourself, your history, your culture, and everything that makes you uniquely you. Only in turning away from the white gaze can we truly make America beautiful. An America where difference is celebrated, heritage is shared and embraced, and belonging is for everyone. Through unearthing veiled history and reclaiming her own identity, Julissa shows us how to do this.

According to Jyoti Bawa's self-statement, the discourse recorded in this book is the result of debates between Amit and her, as well as some debates she had within herself. Amit was her companion—for the world, he was. Physically, he is no longer present, but for her, he remains with her until her last breath. Many times, she has been accused of writing against women. However, she asserts that she is not against anyone or any relationship. Through her writing, she has come to realize that no matter how much one tries, the marks imprinted on a woman's body always narrate a story of their own.

The person saying these simple yet profound observations cut a fragile figure in a crowd filled with a hundred thousand devotees jammed in a stadium. The soothing voice of Sri Sri Ravishankar on International Happiness Day is a balm to the listeners. His face is glowing as he says this and his voice seems to carry the spores of happiness in them. Medieval Monasticism - Centers...

Monasticism, as a religious way of life, emerged from the desire for spiritual purity and devotion. Its origins can be traced to the early centuries of Christianity, when individuals sought solitude and asceticism to deepen their faith. These early monks and hermits withdrew from the distractions of society, dedicating themselves to prayer, fasting, and contemplation. Their practices laid the foundation for organized monastic communities that would later shape religious life in medieval Europe.
Christian asceticism had its roots in the teachings of Jesus and the apostles, who emphasized humility, self-denial, and devotion to God. In the first few centuries after Christ, some Christians chose to live apart from society, embracing a life of solitude in the deserts of Egypt, Syria, and Palestine. Among the most influential of these early ascetics were the Desert Fathers, such as Anthony the Great, who became a model for monastic life. These individuals practiced extreme self-discipline, often enduring harsh conditions to strengthen their spiritual resolve. Their writings and teachings inspired many others to follow their example, leading to the formation of small groups of hermits living near one another.
Over time, these solitary ascetics began to form more structured communities. One of the key figures in this transition was Pachomius, an Egyptian monk who, in the fourth century, established one of the earliest known monastic rules. His guidelines emphasized communal living, regular prayer, and shared labor. Unlike the isolated lifestyle of the early hermits, Pachomian monasteries promoted a balance between solitude and community, setting a precedent for later monastic traditions. This model of coenobitic monasticism—where monks lived together under a common rule—spread throughout the Christian world, influencing later monastic developments.
