Mana. It's a big word. But what is it? Are you born with it, can you earn it, can it be taken away?

For more than five decades, Tame Iti has stood at the heart of Aotearoa's struggle for indigenous rights. From land marches to performance art, police raids to prison cells, his voice has challenged New Zealand to reckon with its colonial legacy.

Once branded as a dangerous and extreme activist, nowhailed as a national treasure, Tame has lived the contradictions and realities of standing with mana motuhake in a modern world.

After being silenced from speaking te reo Maori as a child, Tame went on to champion its revitalisation. He discovered the power of protest and what it means to live with mana in a world that often tries to strip it away.

This is his korero of the road he walked and the people who joined him. The comrades, the supporters, and the ones who tried to take him out.

Mana is the story of a man who has never stopped challenging the status quo. It cements Tame's place as one of Aotearoa's most iconic figures.

Media plays a central role in shaping how individuals perceive and interact with the world. From newspapers and television to digital platforms and social media, mass communication influences nearly every aspect of modern life. Media serves as a bridge between individuals and society, providing information, entertainment, and a platform for discourse. As technology evolves, the ways in which people consume and engage with media continue to transform, creating both opportunities and challenges.
Throughout history, media has been a powerful force in shaping cultural norms, political ideologies, and social movements. The early days of print media allowed for the dissemination of knowledge and ideas, while the emergence of radio and television expanded the reach of information and entertainment. Today, digital media and social networking platforms have revolutionized the speed and accessibility of communication. The constant flow of information enables individuals to stay informed about global events, yet it also raises concerns about misinformation, media bias, and the impact of media consumption on mental health.
The role of media in shaping public opinion is significant. News outlets and entertainment industries influence how issues are framed, which stories receive attention, and how people interpret social and political events. Media has the power to amplify voices, create awareness about critical issues, and inspire social change. However, it can also reinforce stereotypes, promote sensationalism, and contribute to the spread of misinformation. Understanding how media functions, who controls its narratives, and how it affects society is crucial in navigating today’s media landscape.

In 1789, the United States stood at a turning point. After years of conflict during the American Revolution and an uncertain postwar period under the Articles of Confederation, the country was in need of stronger national leadership. The new Constitution, ratified in 1788, was designed to create a more effective federal system while still preserving the ideals of liberty and republicanism. This document was a compromise between those who wanted a powerful central government and those who feared tyranny. It created three branches of government—executive, legislative, and judicial—each with checks and balances to prevent abuse of power. The Bill of Rights, added shortly after ratification, helped ease concerns by protecting individual freedoms such as speech, religion, and the right to a fair trial.
With the Constitution in place, attention turned to the task of putting it into practice. George Washington was unanimously elected as the first president, taking office in April 1789. His presence offered reassurance to many citizens who trusted his leadership and commitment to republican values. Washington worked to establish the authority of the executive branch without appearing monarchical. He formed the first presidential cabinet, appointing Thomas Jefferson as Secretary of State, Alexander Hamilton as Secretary of the Treasury, and Henry Knox as Secretary of War. This team would help shape the future direction of the republic.
The first Congress, meanwhile, worked to set up the basic structures of the new government. They created the federal court system through the Judiciary Act of 1789 and established executive departments. They also passed revenue legislation to fund the government’s activities. One of the early and pressing tasks was addressing the national debt from the Revolution. Alexander Hamilton proposed a financial plan that included federal assumption of state debts, the creation of a national bank, and new taxes.

    Essays: First Series Circles

Nothing stands still. The moment we grasp an idea, it expands beyond us. The instant we define a boundary, a wider one emerges. Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay Circles is not about shapes on a page but about the shifting nature of thought, existence, and perception. Each insight is a stepping stone, each conclusion just another starting point. There is no final answer—only an ever-widening ring of understanding.
Emerson writes with the quiet confidence of someone who has seen the world rearrange itself countless times. He does not dictate; he invites. He does not confine; he liberates. Circles is both a challenge and a comfort: the challenge to let go of fixed truths, the comfort that every ending is merely a new circumference waiting to be drawn. This essay, part of his Essays: First Series, distills the restless energy of transcendentalism into a meditation on the inevitable movement of life.
To read Circles is to be reminded that no thought, no identity, no moment is static. And that is not a reason for despair, but for wonder.
