Beschreibung

In this captivating memoir, Pasquale De Marco takes readers on an inspiring journey of resilience, courage, and the transformative power of the human spirit. Faced with a devastating breast cancer diagnosis, she embarks on a quest to climb Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere, to not only conquer her own mountain but to inspire countless others facing adversity.

With unflinching honesty and vivid prose, Pasquale De Marco recounts her arduous journey, from the initial shock of diagnosis to the grueling treatment that ravaged her body and spirit. Yet, amidst the pain and uncertainty, she finds solace and strength in the beauty of the natural world and the unwavering support of her loved ones.

As she trains for the climb of a lifetime, Pasquale De Marco delves into the depths of her own resilience, discovering a wellspring of inner strength she never knew she possessed. She learns to embrace the challenges that life throws her way, finding purpose and meaning in the face of adversity.

The climb itself is a physical and emotional odyssey, a test of endurance and determination. Pasquale De Marco battles altitude sickness, treacherous weather conditions, and the sheer exhaustion of ascending thousands of feet. But with each step, she draws upon the lessons she has learned throughout her cancer journey, finding strength in her vulnerability and inspiration in the unwavering support of her fellow climbers.

Reaching the summit of Mount Aconcagua is a triumph not just for Pasquale De Marco but for all those who have faced adversity with courage and determination. It is a testament to the indomitable human spirit, a reminder that even in the face of overwhelming challenges, we can rise above our circumstances and achieve the impossible.

This inspiring memoir is a testament to the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity, a story of courage, resilience, and the transformative power of hope. It is a must-read for anyone who has ever faced a challenge and dared to dream of climbing their own mountain.

Most would not expect a book about a stroke to be entertaining, but this memoir will force you to laugh through a tragedy, then cry, then laugh again.Avrel Seale was fifty, did not smoke or drink, had low blood pressure, and had hiked more than two hundred miles the year a stroke nearly ended his life. In an instant, he was teleported into the body of an old man—unbalanced, shaky, spastic, and half-paralyzed. Overnight, he was plunged into a world of brain surgeons, nurses, insurance case managers, and an abundance of therapists.Seale leads us through the harrowing day of his stroke and emergency brain surgery with minute-by-minute intensity. We then follow him through ICU, a rehab hospital, and a neuro-recovery group-living center, where we meet a memorable cast of other stroke survivors and also those recovering from auto accidents and gunshots. Finally home, Seale leads us through a new life of firsts, including returning to work, to driving, to playing guitar, to camping, and even to writing a book—all with one hand. What emerges from his humor (“elegant but devastating”) is a revealing critique of the hospital experience, the insurance industry, and rehab culture. And his nothing-off-the-table quest for recovery shows both the sobering struggles and inspiring possibilities of life after a stroke in twenty-first century America.

Rachel Cusk meets Nora Ephron in this intimate and evolving portrait about the end of a marriage and how life can fall apart and be rebuilt in wonderful and surprising ways.

One minute Elizabeth Crane and her husband of fifteen years are fixing up their old house in Upstate New York, finally setting down roots after stints in Chicago, Texas, and Brooklyn, when his unexpected admission—I'm not happy—changes everything. Suddenly she finds herself separated and in couples therapy, living in an apartment in the city with an old friend and his kid. It's understood that the apartment and bonus family are temporary, but the situation brings unexpected comfort and much-needed healing for wounds even older than her marriage.

Crafting the story as the very events chronicled are unfolding, Crane writes from a place of guarded possibility, capturing through vignettes and collected moments a semblance of the real-time practice of healing. At turns funny and dark, with moments of poignancy, This Story Will Change is an unexpected and moving portrait of a woman in transformation, a chronicle of how even the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves are bound to change.

The Mexican drug war, also known as the Guerra contra el narcotráfico en México, is the Mexican theater of the global war on drugs, a campaign led by the United States federal government. This war has resulted in a protracted, asymmetric low-intensity conflict between the Mexican government and various drug trafficking organizations. The Mexican government’s main objective when it intervened militarily in 2006 was to curb drug-related violence, which had escalated in the preceding years. The government’s stated aim, in collaboration with U.S. officials, was to eliminate the cartels and reduce the demand for drugs trafficking.
Violence erupted after the 1989 arrest of Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, who was the leader and founder of Mexico’s first major drug cartel, the Guadalajara Cartel. His arrest led to the dissolution of the cartel as high-ranking members splintered off to create their own groups. This fragmentation gave rise to the Sinaloa, Juarez, Tijuana, and Sonora cartels, among others, which began to battle for control over lucrative trafficking routes and territories. This marked a new chapter in the drug war, with the cartels becoming increasingly violent in their efforts to secure dominance.
Mexican drug trafficking organizations have been a powerful force for decades, but their power surged significantly in the 1990s after the collapse of the Colombian Cali and Medellín cartels. By 2007, Mexican criminal groups controlled an overwhelming 90% of the cocaine entering the United States. Efforts to arrest cartel leaders, including those in the Tijuana and Gulf cartels, often resulted in even more violence, as smaller gangs competed for control over key drug trade routes into the U.S.

Scion of the great Quaker chocolate dynasty, Adrian Cadbury (1929-2015) was educated at Eton and Cambridge, yet never quite fitted into the mould of the British establishment.
As one of the most influential business personalities of the later 20th-century, he was a committed capitalist, but championed workers' rights and backed numerous social causes. By his death, he had given most of his fortune away. To most people, however, his private life remained a closed book, overshadowed by a string of family tragedies and the eventual hostile take-over of his world famous family-owned business.
The Cadbury Report, his pioneering work on corporate governance remains his greatest legacy, but Adrian Cadbury's career ranged far wider. With 2024 marking Cadbury's 200th anniversary, this is his first biography, and one drawn from interviews with the family and those who knew him. He was a huge public figure of his era – but few at the time understood the tragedy in his life, or how hard-won were the successes he achieved.
