The Habsburg Dynasty, one of the most influential and enduring families in European history, laid the foundation for an empire that would dominate much of Central Europe for over six centuries. The family’s rise to power was not a result of military conquest or economic dominance, but rather strategic marriages, political alliances, and a series of calculated moves that allowed them to amass territories and influence across Europe. At the heart of the Habsburg's success was their ability to use dynastic marriages to expand their reach, securing land, titles, and influence through the marriages of their children to powerful European houses.
The origins of the Habsburgs can be traced to the 11th century, with the rise of the family’s first significant member, Radbot, a nobleman from what is now Switzerland. However, it was not until the 13th century that the Habsburgs began their ascent to prominence under the leadership of Rudolf I. In 1273, Rudolf was elected King of Germany, marking the beginning of the Habsburgs' long reign in Central Europe. This election not only established their position within the Holy Roman Empire but also set the stage for their future expansion.
The key to their continued rise lay in the Habsburgs’ unparalleled ability to form advantageous marriages. Rather than relying on military might, the family expanded its territorial holdings through strategic unions with other royal and noble families. One of the most significant of these marriages was that of Maximilian I in 1477 to Mary of Burgundy, which brought the Habsburgs the rich territories of the Burgundian Netherlands. This marriage effectively linked the Habsburgs with the wealth and influence of the Low Countries, establishing them as key players in European politics.

An insider's look into the largely anonymous volunteers in local party organizations who make decisions in elections with profound implications for American democracy.

Although scholars have long recognized that local American parties play an important role in elections, surprisingly little is known about the individuals who lead these typically small, volunteer-based organizations. As David Doherty, Conor M. Dowling, and Michael G. Miller show in Small Power, local party leaders influence the electoral process in myriad ways: They recruit and support candidates, interface with state-wide and federal campaigns, and get out the vote in their communities. Drawing from a survey of over 850 Democratic and Republican local party chairs, a nationally representative sample of voters, and dozens of in-depth interviews, the authors describe how parties are organized, who party chairs are, and how they serve the party. Leveraging novel experiments that illuminate how chairs make choices about which individuals to recruit as candidates—as well as whether those choices reflect voters' preferences—Small Power sheds new light on how seemingly mundane local decisions can shape party goals, influence candidate pipelines, and affect who ends up winning elections.

Making an American Family: A Recipe in Five Generations is the progressive story of one family, told through five generations, beginning with their journey into the United States during the Mexican Revolution, and culminating with their posterity, attending school online during the COVID19 pandemic. A family memoir, told through a chorus of voices, invites the reader into the multi-sensorial experience of memory and story. The price of “becoming American” in the USA proved to be high, but did the family think it was worth it? With passion and precision, Rodriguez serves the reader a family feast of memories, the perfect recipe for making an American family."Part memoir, part oral history, and part personal exploration on the part of a bi-ethnic woman who never felt Mexican enough, Making an American Family is a love letter to those who have gone, and a prayer for those still to come." ~Elizabeth Gonzalez James, author of Mona at Sea."Janet Rodriguez has poured her whole heart—all her love, all her longing, all her questions, all her tremendous talent—into this beautiful, delicious, deeply moving exploration of family and culture and home, investigating what is lost through assimilation, what is gained when family sticks together." ~Gayle Brandeis, author of Many Restless Concerns, and The Art of Misdiagnosis.“Canta, no llores...Sing, don't cry,” a wonderful, old Mexican song, describes this amazing family memoir. Janet Rodriguez follows her family's line to five generations, including family trees, recipes from her ancestors, and the most marvelous photos. This major new manifesto offers a "clear and compelling vision of a postcapitalist society" and shows how left-wing politics can be rebuilt for the twenty-first century (Mark Fisher, author of Capitalist Realism

Neoliberalism isn't working. Austerity is forcing millions into poverty and many more into precarious work, while the left remains trapped in stagnant political practices that offer no respite.

Inventing the Future is a bold new manifesto for life after capitalism. Against the confused understanding of our high-tech world by both the right and the left, this book claims that the emancipatory and future-oriented possibilities of our society can be reclaimed. Instead of running from a complex future, Nick Srnicek and Alex Williams demand a postcapitalist economy capable of advancing standards, liberating humanity from work and developing technologies that expand our freedoms.
