  Gardening at the Margins tells the remarkable story of a diverse group of neighbors working together to grow food and community in the Santa Clara Valley in California. Based on four years of deeply engaged ethnographic field research via a Participatory Action Research project with the people and ecosystems of La Mesa Verde home garden program, Gabriel R. Valle develops a theory of convivial labor to describe how the acts of care among the diverse gardeners—through growing, preparing, and eating food in one of the most income unequal places in the country—are powerful, complex acts of resistance. 
   
   
   
  The individuals featured in the book are imagining and building alternative worlds and futures amid the very real challenges they embody and endure. Climate change, for example, is forcing thousands of migrants to urban areas, which means recent immigrants' traditional environmental, nutritional, and healing knowledge will continue to be threatened by the pervasiveness of modernity and the homogenization of global capitalism. Moreover, once rural people migrate to urban areas, their ability to retain traditional foodways will remain difficult without spaces of autonomy. The stories in this book reveal how people create the physical space to grow food and the political space to enact autonomy to revive and restore agroecological knowledge needed for an uncertain future.

  The Mixtec civilization, known as the Ñuu Savi or "People of the Rain," emerged in the rugged mountains and fertile valleys of what is now Oaxaca, Mexico. Their origins date back to the Preclassic period, around 1500 BCE, when small agricultural communities began to flourish in the Mixteca Alta, Mixteca Baja, and Mixteca de la Costa regions. These early settlements were shaped by the challenging geography, with steep hills and limited arable land requiring innovative farming techniques. Over centuries, the Mixtec people developed sophisticated agricultural systems, including terracing and irrigation, which allowed them to sustain growing populations and establish permanent communities. 
  Mythology played a central role in Mixtec identity, reinforcing their connection to the land and legitimizing the rule of their elite class. The Mixtec creation story, recorded in their intricate codices, tells of divine ancestors emerging from a sacred place known as Apoala, a cave associated with the origins of humanity. These ancestors, believed to be both human and divine, established the first Mixtec lineages, which would later claim authority over the various city-states. This mythology was not just a story but a political tool that reinforced the power of Mixtec rulers, linking them directly to the gods and the forces of nature. 
  The early Mixtec communities were organized into small chiefdoms, each ruled by a hereditary elite. These leaders controlled land, resources, and religious ceremonies, ensuring stability and continuity within their societies. Over time, as populations expanded and rivalries grew, these chiefdoms evolved into larger political entities, forming the foundation for the powerful Mixtec city-states that would dominate the region in later centuries.

He says, 'From as early as I can remember I had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, and a desire to understand the true nature of man and this world we live in. I was also always seeking out people who could answer all the questions I had about life, the universe, and everything.' After studying film production in the early nineties Prana was able to fulfill his lifelong desire to travel to India. admittedly his first trip changed his life completely and forever. 'At that point,' He recalls, 'my thirst for material knowledge turned to a desire to understand the spiritual side of life. For the next six years, I returned frequently, where I studied many different paths of Hinduism, Buddhism, and other forms of yoga and meditation. However, even after learning and experiencing so much I was still left incomplete.' in 2001 during the young man's sixth trip to India, he traveled to Vrindavan, a holy town associated with Lord Krishna south of Delhi. It was there he met his spiritual guide, and mentor Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Goswami. Some twenty years on, Prana has been resident in his teacher's temples all over the world, particularly in India, Australia, America, and Europe. A wonderful audio adventure for everyone to enjoy!
