  Geoffroi de Villehardouin was born in the 1150s, the son of a nobleman of Champagne. He became Marshal of Champagne in 1185, a position whose duties included administration, overseeing defense, arbitration, arranging campaigns and, in the absence of the lord, taking command. He was honest and religious, a good statesman and a brave soldier, qualities that enabled him to play a leading role in the Fourth Crusade. 
    
  Christians made pilgrimage to the Holy City of Jerusalem, freely practicing their religion there until 1076, when the Turks assumed control, killing and imprisoning the Christians, and desecrating their holy places. 
    
  The First Crusade was undertaken to avenge these evils. An army led by Western European noblemen joined forces with the Byzantine Emperor in Constantinople and entered Asia Minor. They defeated the Turks and took Jerusalem in 1099. The Holy City was again threatened by the Turks in 1144, inspiring the Second Crusade. Jerusalem remained in Christian hands until falling to the Moslem Empire in 1187. The Third Crusade immediately followed, but ultimately failed to recapture the Holy City. 
    
  The Fourth Crusade, launched at the dawn of the 13th-century, degenerated into a war against fellow Christians—Frank against Greek, Roman Catholic against Orthodox. Villehardouin provides this first-hand account of that famous campaign.

  "Protagoras" is a dialogue by Plato, believed to have been written in the 4th century BCE. The dialogue centers around the character of Protagoras, a renowned sophist who claims to be able to teach virtue and excellence to others. Socrates, the main character and interlocutor in the dialogue, engages with Protagoras and his followers, challenging their ideas and methods. Throughout the dialogue, Protagoras and his followers argue that virtue can be taught and that all knowledge is relative to the individual. They use a variety of rhetorical techniques and arguments to defend their position, including the famous statement, "man is the measure of all things." Socrates, however, challenges their ideas, arguing that virtue cannot be taught and that there must be some objective standard of knowledge and truth. Read in English, unabridged.

David Schmidtz argues that the reverse is true: the question of how to live in a community is more fundamental than questions about how to live. This book questions whether we are getting to the foundations of human morality when we ignore contingent features of communities in which political animals live. 
   
   
   
  Schmidtz contends that theorizing about how to live together should take its cue from contemporary moral philosophy's attempts to go beyond formal theory, and ask which principles have a history of demonstrably being organizing principles of actual thriving communities at their best. Ideals emerging from such research should be a distillation of social scientific insight from observable histories of successful community building. What emerges from ongoing testing in the crucible of life experience will be path-dependent in detail even if not in general outline, partly because any way of life is a response to challenges that are themselves contingent, path dependent, and in flux. 
   
   
   
  Building on this view, Schmidtz argues that justice evolved as a device for grounding peace in the mutual recognition that everyone has their own life to live, and everyone has the right and the responsibility to decide for themselves what to want.

   In my 10 plus years of teaching, I have found that students struggle with two major challenges in writing a quality capstone paper. First, they have difficulty creating a rigorous analytical framework. Too often, the papers tend to be more descriptive in nature, which means that the final policy recommendation may be flawed. This book attempts to fill that gap by discussing in detail the various components of the framework as well as their interdependence.
