Beschreibung

In Beyond the Gallery of Shadows, Ron Slate embarks on an extraordinary odyssey through the intersections of art, technology, and humanity. With eloquence and insight, Slate delves into the heart of artistic expression in the digital age, unveiling the transformative power of technology as it merges with the canvas of creativity.

Prepare to journey into dreamscapes where imagination reigns supreme, where the boundaries between reality and fantasy dissolve, and where the colors of emotions ignite the soul. Slate's words paint vivid tapestries of longing, love, and the boundless realms of possibility, inviting readers to explore the depths of their own subconscious landscapes.

Beyond the Gallery of Shadows transcends the traditional confines of art appreciation, delving into the profound impact that artistic expression has on society. Slate deftly weaves together a narrative that reflects the triumphs, struggles, and complexities of the human condition. Through art, he reveals the beauty and fragility of our existence, the intricate tapestry of relationships that bind us together, and the hidden narratives that shape our collective identity.

With each chapter, Slate masterfully intertwines art and science, demonstrating how these seemingly disparate disciplines converge to unveil the mysteries of the cosmos and the enigma of time. He takes readers on a journey through the vast expanse of space, where celestial bodies ignite the imagination and inspire awe. He unravels the threads of history, unearthing forgotten stories and illuminating the hidden connections that shape our present.

Beyond the Gallery of Shadows is more than just a book; it is an invitation to transcend the boundaries of conventional thought, to embrace the unknown and explore the unexplored. It is a celebration of the human spirit, a testament to the transformative power of art, and an ode to the infinite possibilities that lie within the realm of imagination. With eloquence and grace, Slate invites readers to embark on a journey that will forever change their perception of art, technology, and the human experience.

Let the Children Play - How More...

Play is how children explore, discover, fail, succeed, socialize, and flourish. It is a fundamental element of the human condition. It's the key to giving schoolchildren skills they need to succeed—skills like creativity, innovation, teamwork, focus, resilience, expressiveness, empathy, concentration, and executive function. Expert organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Centers for Disease Control agree that play and physical activity are critical foundations of childhood, academics, and future skills—yet politicians are destroying play in childhood education and replacing it with standardization, stress, and forcible physical restraint, which are damaging to learning and corrosive to society.

But this is not the case for hundreds of thousands of lucky children who are enjoying the power of play in schools in China, Texas, Oklahoma, Long Island, Scotland, and in the entire nation of Finland. In Let the Children Play, Pasi Sahlberg, Finnish educator and scholar, and Fulbright Scholar William Doyle make the case for helping schools and children thrive by unleashing the power of play and giving more physical and intellectual play to all schoolchildren.

An autistic feminist author looks at women's history, in search of her 'weird sisters.'

It seemed to me that many of the moments when my autism had caused problems, or at least marked me out as different, were those moments when I had come up against some unspoken law about how a girl or a woman should be, and failed to meet it.

An autism diagnosis in midlife enabled Joanne Limburg to finally make sense of why her emotional expression, social discomfort and presentation had always marked her as an outsider.

Eager to discover other women who had been misunderstood in their time, she writes a series of wide-ranging letters to four 'weird sisters' from history, addressing topics including autistic parenting, social isolation, feminism, the movement for disability rights and the appalling punishments that have been meted out over centuries to those deemed to fall short of the norm.

This heartfelt, deeply compassionate and wholly original work humanizes women who have so often been dismissed for their differences, and will be celebrated by 'weird sisters' everywhere.

Though it went largely unremarked in the Islamic world at the time, the First Crusade has since become a contentious symbol of European imperialism in the Middle East. Debate over whether the Crusades can truly be perceived as an early example of European colonialism continues in medieval historiography, though the evidence for this is thin. The territory taken by the Franks from the Turks had previously belonged to Eastern Christians and had only recently been seized by the Turks themselves. The Crusader States were relatively small and weak, and they were reconquered centuries before modern European colonialism began. The Crusaders themselves saw it as a holy war of reclamation of previously lost (albeit almost-mythical) territory. To them, the Muslims were the first aggressors, and they were somewhat bolstered in this view by the support that they largely held from local Christians.
The Crusader States were relatively small and weak, and while they tried to be a bulwark of Christianity in the Holy Land, the Crusader States were reconquered centuries before modern European colonialism began. Nonetheless, the Crusades and the Crusader States galvanized the Christians of Western Europe to expand their world. While it remains unclear how much that world expanded in practical terms such as trade, or how it affected later attitudes during the expansion to the New World and other regions, it definitely engaged the European mind in both positive and negative ways. As such, the crusades soon achieved near-mythic status in the European literature and remain among the most important events of the Middle Ages.
At the same time, the Crusader States were not one homogenized region but actually several distinct territories that had their own unique histories and interests. In fact, many of them were founded a century apart.

THE TRUE STORY OF DAVID HENRY WHITE, A FREE BLACK TEENAGE SAILOR ENSLAVED ON THE HIGH SEAS DURING THE CIVIL WAR, WHOSE LIFE STORY WAS FALSELY AND INTENTIONALLY APPROPRIATED TO ADVANCE THE LOST CAUSE TROPE OF A CONTENTED SLAVE, HAPPY AND SAFE IN SERVILITY.

David Henry White, a free Black teenage sailor from Lewes, Delaware, was kidnapped by Captain Raphael Semmes of the Confederate raider Alabama on October 9, 1862, from the Philadelphia-based packet ship Tonawanda. White remained captive on the Alabama for over 600 days, until he drowned during the Battle of Cherbourg on June 19, 1864.

In a best-selling postwar memoir, Semmes falsely described White as a contented slave who remained loyal to the Confederacy. In Kidnapped at Sea, archaeologist Andrew Sillen uses a forensic approach to describe White’s enslavement and demise and illustrates how White’s actual life belies the Lost Cause narrative his captors sought to construct.

Kidnapped at Sea is the first book to focus on White’s actual life, rather than relying on Semmes and other secondary sources. Until now, Semmes’s appropriation of White’s life has escaped scrutiny, thereby demonstrating the challenges faced by disempowered, illiterate people—and how well-crafted, racist fabrications have become part of Civil War memory.

“In this fast-paced narrative, Andrew Sillen uncovers the astounding story of David Henry White, a free Black teenager kidnapped from a US ship and forced to accompany the Confederate raider Alabama. Through a haunting account, Sillen restores White’s humanity and, in doing so, provides a timely examination of the necessity for addressing historical crimes.”—Caroline E. Janney, author of Ends of War: The Unfinished Fight of Lee’s Army after Appomattox

The borderlands of the paranormal include some bizarre stories. However, none are more strange or unsettling than the tale of what became known as the Philadelphia Experiment, an alleged effort during World War II to make a US Navy ship invisible by using electrical power.
The purported experiment gained international fame with the publication of a book by Charles Berlitz in 1978 and has now entered the lexicon of popular imagination. More than one movie has featured this experiment, but even as more people have heard about the Philadelphia Experiment, there are a number of different accounts of just what is said to have happened. The most dramatic accounts involve the brief teleportation of a US Navy warship and its crew into another dimension, with subsequent and horrifying effects for the men on board when it returned. Other versions are a little more mundane, but all seem to agree that something very odd happened to a US Navy ship in 1943.
This is a complex story, first emerging in the late 1950s before coming to international attention in the 1970s and developing in the 1980s and after. It involves some of the foremost scientists of the 20th century, and while it is a truly fascinating tale, it is one that has caused (and continues to generate) a great deal of debate. Is the Philadelphia Experiment a hoax, a myth, or somehow partly true, and how did this story first emerge? Readers may be more than a little surprised at the outcome.
