  The early 1930s were a tumultuous period for German politics, even in comparison to the ongoing transition to the modern era that caused various forms of chaos throughout the rest of the world. In the United States, reliance on the outdated gold standard and an absurdly parsimonious monetary policy helped bring about the Great Depression. Meanwhile, the Empire of Japan began its ultimately fatal adventurism with the invasion of Manchuria, alienating the rest of the world with the atrocities it committed. Around the same time, Gandhi began his drive for the peaceful independence of India through nonviolent protests against the British. 
  	It was in Germany, however, that the strongest seeds of future tragedy were sown. The struggling Weimar Republic had become a breeding ground for extremist politics, including two opposed and powerful authoritarian entities: the right-wing National Socialists and the left-wing KPD Communist Party. As the 1930s dawned, these two totalitarian groups held one another in a temporary stalemate, enabling the fragile ghost of democracy to continue a largely illusory survival for a few more years.  
  	That stalemate was broken in dramatic fashion on a bitterly cold night in late February 1933, and it was the Nazis who emerged decisively as the victors. A single act of arson against the famous Reichstag building proved to be the catalyst that propelled Adolf Hitler to victory in the elections of March 1933, which set the German nation irrevocably on the path towards World War II. That war would plunge much of the planet into an existential battle that ultimately cost an estimated 60 million lives.

  Many people wonder why Jo starts a school for boys..even though Little Women mentions how much Jo loves boys many times. In Little Men, we can see how Jo and Friedrich wish that their boys grow to respect women, so could Jo starting a school for boys actually be a feminist act? 
  There are lots of people who say that Friedrich forced Jo to start a school or Friedrich forced Jo to become a teacher. None of that happens in the novel. So have these people even read Little Women? In the book, Jo is the one who says that she wants to start a school. Her exact words are Quote "even before I met my Fritz, I used to think how when I made my fortune and no one needed me at home, I'd hire a big house and pick up some poor fore-long little lads who hadn't any mothers and take care of them and make life jolly for them before it was too late. 
  I see so many of them going to ruin for want of help, and at the right minute. I love them, so to do anything for them, I seem to feel their wants and sympathize with their troubles. I know I should so like to be a mother to them". End quote. In the scene in the book where Jo explains her plans on starting school, she clearly says that what she wants to do is to have a flock of boys that she can nurture, she can take care of them and can be a mother to them and love them. A lot of people erase the maternal elements from Jo's character.

  The greatest controversy in the history of the US Navy of the early American Republic was the revelation that the son of the Secretary of War had seemingly plotted a bloody mutiny that would have turned the US brig Somers into a pirate ship. The plot discovered, he and his coconspirators were hastily condemned and hanged at sea. 
   
   
   
  The repercussions of those acts brought headlines, scandal, a fistfight at a cabinet meeting, a court martial, ruined lives, lost reputations, and tales of a haunted ship "bound for the devil" and lost tragically at sea with many of its crew. The "Somers affair" led to the founding of the US Naval Academy and it remains the Navy's only acknowledged mutiny in its history. The story also inspired Herman Melville's White-Jacket and Billy Budd.
