  "To understand ourselves, we must live with ourselves and know all about ourselves. The mind for that matter is flickering, fickle, difficult to guard and control and flutters like a fish taken out of its watery abode and thrown upon the land. Somebody causes you hurt and although the aggressor has disappeared from sight, the hurt grows within you and every so often keeps surfacing with an overpowering intensity to give you a warp. Then again, you see something that has captured your attention and your mind has instantly photographed it from every conceivable angle with a see-through lens, developed it in your mental dark-room, brought out the prints and enlargements with the skill of an expert cameraman and processor rolled into one. Similarly, all the sense faculties and the mind are of high sensitivity and respond to anything and everything exciting. If the degree of excitement is not sufficiently satisfying, you step it up with the use of drugs, intoxicants and poisons. This activity goes on unabated and makes of you a human derelict. A wise person living in his mind protects himself holding himself dear. Such a person whose senses are subdued, whose pride is destroyed and is free from corruptions, is calm of mind, speech and action and rightly knows, and is perfectly peaceful and equipoised."

  South of the Norman city of Caen, the twin features of the Verrières and Bourguebus ridges were key stepping stones for the British Second Army in late July 1944. To capture this vital ground, Allied forces would have to defeat arguably the strongest German armored formation in Normandy: the I. SS-Panzerkorps "Leibstandarte." The resulting battles of late July and early August 1944 saw powerful German defensive counterattacks south of Caen inflict tremendous casualties, regain lost ground, and at times defeat Anglo-Canadian operations in detail. 
   
   
   
  These defeats and the experience of meeting an enemy with near-equal resources exposed a flawed Anglo-Canadian offensive tactical doctrine that was overly dependent on the supremacy of its artillery forces. Furthermore, weaknesses in Allied tank technology inhibited their armored forces from fighting a decisive armored battle. Confronted with the full force of the Panzerwaffe, Anglo-Canadian doctrine at times floundered. In response, the Royal Artillery and Royal Canadian Artillery units pummeled the German tankers and grenadiers, but despite their best efforts, ground could not be captured by concentrated artillery fire alone. 
   
   
   
  This is a detailed account of the success of I. SS-Panzerkorps' defensive operations, aimed at holding the Vèrrieres-Bourgebus ridges in late July 1944.

  The Black Death - Plague and...

  The story of the Black Death begins long before it reached the shores of Europe. At the heart of the devastation was a bacterium called Yersinia pestis, the microorganism responsible for one of the deadliest pandemics in human history. This pathogen is believed to have originated in the arid plains of Central Asia, where it lived in a natural reservoir within rodent populations, particularly marmots. These animals, though mostly isolated in remote areas, became the starting point for a chain of transmission that would eventually span continents. 
  Early outbreaks of plague-like illnesses were recorded in China and other parts of Asia as early as the 13th century, suggesting that the bacterium was already circulating in the region. However, it was the growing network of trade routes, especially the Silk Road, that allowed the disease to move rapidly from one community to another. Merchants, caravans, and travelers unknowingly carried infected fleas and rats from one trading hub to the next, creating a direct path for the disease to follow. 
  One of the most significant early episodes linked to the Black Death's arrival in Europe occurred during the Mongol siege of the Crimean city of Caffa (modern-day Feodosiya) in 1346. According to some historical accounts, the Mongols, after suffering an outbreak in their own ranks, used the infected corpses of their dead as biological weapons by catapulting them over the city walls. While the historical accuracy of this account is debated, it symbolizes the critical role Caffa played as a point of transmission. From this port city, fleeing Genoese merchants are believed to have carried the disease back to Italy by ship, bringing the plague directly into European trading centers.
