Sinossi

Prisoner Exchanges explores the intricate world of negotiated releases, delving into the history, political motivations, and human costs behind these complex transactions. It examines how prisoner swaps have been used as tools of statecraft and their impact on international relations. Did you know that prisoner exchanges can serve as confidence-building measures or, conversely, sources of renewed conflict? The book reveals how these exchanges reflect broader geopolitical dynamics, offering insights into the strategies shaping global events.

The book begins by introducing core concepts and defining different types of prisoner exchanges, then progresses into a historical overview with key case studies. From Cold War spy swaps to modern-day hostage negotiations, the book analyzes the political and diplomatic ramifications of these exchanges. It draws on archival documents, government reports, and personal accounts to offer a nuanced understanding.

Highlighting the role of non-state actors, the book argues that these negotiations are crucial indicators of the shifting dynamics of power and evolving norms in international relations. This book stands out for its comprehensive scope and rigorous analysis, focusing on the human dimension of prisoner exchanges. It aims to provide a balanced account of a sensitive topic, making it a valuable resource for students, academics, policymakers, and anyone interested in international relations, diplomatic history, and human rights.

This book contains the following four titles:
Anger Management - Anger is a powerful emotion that can impact our lives in profound ways. It can arise in moments of frustration, disappointment, or perceived injustice, and, if left unchecked, can lead to regrettable actions and damaged relationships. While anger is a natural and normal response, learning to manage it effectively is crucial for maintaining healthy connections, achieving personal growth, and finding inner peace.
Jealousy - Jealousy is a complex and powerful emotion that affects everyone at some point in their lives. Often described as a blend of fear, insecurity, and possessiveness, it can stir intense feelings of inadequacy and resentment. While jealousy is an emotion that can arise in various forms, ranging from mild discomfort to full-blown emotional turmoil, its impact on individuals and relationships is profound.
Porn Addiction - Porn addiction is a complex and multifaceted issue that extends beyond mere exposure to explicit content. It involves a compulsive behavior pattern where the pursuit of pornographic material starts to dominate an individual’s daily life, affecting mental, emotional, and even physical well-being. Understanding this phenomenon requires a holistic look at how modern technology, societal influences, and neurobiological factors converge to create an environment in which such compulsions can take root.
Stress and Anxiety - Stress is an inevitable part of life, and everyone experiences it in different ways. It can be triggered by external factors, such as work pressures, relationship challenges, or financial difficulties, or it can stem from internal thoughts and perceptions. Understanding stress and its triggers is the first step toward managing it effectively.

For nearly a thousand years following its foundation, there was only one Christian Church. Centered in the city of Rome, the Church expanded and grew until it became the dominant religion in Europe and beyond. The early growth of the Church had been suppressed by the Romans until the Emperor Constantine became the first to convert the empire to Christianity, and from that point forward, the growth of the Church was inextricably linked with the Roman Empire, the most powerful military, economic, and political force in the ancient world.
However, once the Western Roman Empire collapsed, Rome’s preeminence was not a situation that was welcomed in Constantinople, now the center of the Byzantine Empire and a thriving and wealthy metropolis. After being sacked by outsiders, Rome had become a virtual ghost town, partially ruined and inhabited by a small number of hardy survivors, yet in the center of the crumbling city was the Vatican Borgo, the Palace of the Supreme Pontiff and the heart of the Church. In retrospect, it is easy to see that this was a situation that was bound to lead to conflict and disagreement, with the Greek-speaking Eastern Orthodox Church centered in Constantinople and being governed by Latin-speaking popes in a faraway city.
To many, the pope is the embodiment of godly love in its purest form. No matter the weather or the inconvenience, millions upon millions of fervid devotees brave the congested streets of their cities, all for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to welcome the beloved Vicar of Christ. However, the modern perception of the pope is a far cry from how things were just a couple of centuries ago. There was a time when the holiest men of the world were constantly at each other's throats, willing to go to any lengths to secure the coveted papal title. By the late 14th century, tensions within the Church reached its breaking point, resulting in the Western Schism, an infamous split of the Catholic Church.

Volga Blues - A Journey into the...

    Winner of the Estense Prize

A risky undercover reporting trip along Russia’s great mother-river, the Volga, reveals the tortuous history and frightening current fantasies of a nation.

Since the invasion of Ukraine and ban on foreign reporters, Russia seems to have sunk into an even deeper shadow than in the darkest times of the Soviet Union. Only by presenting himself as an historian was Italian journalist Marzio G. Mian able to penetrate the Russian heartland, leading to his groundbreaking cover story for Harpers’ Magazine, “Behind the New Iron Curtain.”

In Volga Blues, Russian history and literature inform every step of Mian’s revealing and perilous journey along Russia’s most culturally significant river, the fulcrum of its history, “the mother.” Along with Alessandro Cosmelli, his photographer; Vlad, their translator and fixer; and Katya, Vlad‘s girlfriend, Mian manages to gather firsthand accounts from ordinary Russians. They discuss not only the impact of the war, Western sanctions, and their country’s isolation, but how Russian culture has changed as a result. Stalin is back in favor, Lenin has been downgraded as a “Europeanized intellectual.” Newly sophisticated local and seasonal cuisine is all the rage. People cite centuries-old grievances to explain their fear of Western invasion, as they claim a willingness to accept nuclear apocalypse to save Russian pride. Talking with contemporary Russian intellectuals, entrepreneurs, priests, widows, mercenaries, and pacifists, Mian discovers how little the West knows about Russia and Russians. Deeply distrustful of democracy, yearning for the ideological and spiritual purity of the Orthodox Church, betrayed by and fearful of the West, and reassured by the brutal, fragile, ancient dream of an imperial civilization, they make clear that the Cold War has not yet ended.

In visceral prose, Mian takes us across the floodplains where the Russian Orthodox faith first took root, where the Soviet empire asserted itself, and where the neo-imperial project of Vladimir Putin’s post-Soviet autocracy is currently being consolidated. The result is a harrowing, haunting vision of today’s great clash of civilizations—between Russia and the West—including a United States that at times seems uncannily similar.

"Volga Blues blends history, myth, and comedy with the paranoia of a nation in which Stalin seems to be rising from the dead, minus the communism but with brutality intact. Marzio Mian is Alexis de Tocqueville in what has once again become a land of the czars, a Joan Didion for the new authoritarianism's absurdity and sorrow."—Jeff Sharlet, New York Times bestselling author of The Undertow: Scenes from a Slow Civil War
