Synopsis

Social vs Solitary delves into the fascinating world of animal behavior, examining why some species thrive in social groups while others prefer a solitary existence. Exploring the evolutionary advantages and disadvantages tied to different lifestyles, the book reveals how factors like resource availability and environmental pressures shape these contrasting behaviors. Intriguingly, the evolution of altruism, where animals act selflessly for the benefit of others, is a key focus, alongside understanding how competition impacts social structures.

The book adopts a comparative approach, using case studies from insects to mammals to illustrate core principles. It synthesizes established theories in behavioral ecology and evolutionary biology, highlighting the physiological adaptations that come with different lifestyles. By integrating ecological, evolutionary, and physiological perspectives, Social vs Solitary presents a holistic view, moving beyond simple comparisons to explore the intricacies of social and solitary behaviors.

The chapters progress from fundamental concepts to specific examples, culminating in a discussion of implications for conservation biology, offering a valuable resource for students, researchers, and anyone fascinated by the natural world.

Canada must prepare for an isolationist and unpredictable neighbor to the South should a MAGA leader gain the White House in 2025.

The American-led global order has been increasingly challenged by Chinese assertiveness and Russian revanchism. As we enter this new era of great-power competition, Canadians tend to assume that the United States will continue to provide global leadership for the West.

Canada Alone sketches the more dystopian future that is likely to result if the illiberal, anti-democratic, and authoritarian Make America Great Again movement regains power. Under the twin stresses of a reinvigorated America First policy and the purposeful abandonment of American global leadership, the West will likely fracture, leaving Canadians all alone with an increasingly dysfunctional United States. Canada Alone outlines what Canadians will need to navigate this deeply unfamiliar post-American world.

The level of Earth’s Oceans have changed many times over the millennia.Global sea level rose by a total of more than 120 meters (360 feet) as the vast ice sheets of the last Ice Age melted back. This melt-back lasted from about 19,000 to about 6,000 years ago, meaning that the average rate of sea-level rise was roughly 1 meter per century.Since many early cities and civilizations were built near the coast, there must be many submerged ruins around the world we are not yet familiar with. The study of these ruins is one of the great unmapped needs for future archeology. We do know about a few of these ruins and are learning much more. This book is a summary of what we know or think we know today about these lost civilizations, cities, and towns.I’ve also included the stories of many legendary cities or locations like Atlantis and Lemuria.

Though it started as a 300 person settlement in 1832, Chicago’s location near the Great Lakes and its access to the Mississippi River turned it into a major trading city overnight. The city became even more important when railroads were constructed to connect the country, making it the first major city in the “West” during the mid-19th century. By 1871, the original 300 person settlement was now home to about 300,000 people, and Chicago had become the first major city built by Americans rather than European colonial powers
Thus, it had taken less than 40 years for the new settlement of 300 to become a city of nearly 300,000, but it only took two days in 1871 for much of it to be destroyed. On the night of October 8, 1871, a blaze in the southwestern section of Chicago began to burn out of control. The popular legend is that a cow in Mrs. Catherine O’Leary’s barn had kicked over a lantern and started a fire. The story blaming the cow was a colorful fabrication, but the fire itself was very real, lasting almost two whole days and devouring several square miles of the city. The fire was so powerful that firefighters could not put it out, due to dry conditions, stiff winds, and the fact the city was mostly made of wood.
Walking around Chicago today, it’s easy to forget about its past as a rural frontier. That’s due in no small part to the way Chicago responded to the Great Fire of 1871. Immediately after the fire, Chicago encouraged inhabitants and architects to build over the ruins, spurring creative architecture with elaborate designs. Architects descended upon the city for the opportunity to rebuild the area, and over the next few decades they had rebuilt Chicago with the country’s most modern architecture and monuments.
Chicago recovered well enough within 20 years to win the right to host the World’s Fair in 1893.

Welcome to the house of fun.
It's the early 1980s and Fiona Neary and her family have recently moved back from England to the family farm. Fiona's huge-hearted mum decides to take in foster children – a decision that will change all their lives.
Over the next decade, a procession of faces passes through the house. Every child has their own story, and each story claims a little piece of Fiona's heart. Some stay a few weeks; some months, and then years. All these children, as well as Fiona and her family, must pass through a chaotic system: where a judge's decision can alter a child's life, for better or worse; where emergency placements can break up siblings; where the foster family are often left in the dark and with little back-up.
Filled with pathos and humour, Parcels in the Post is both a memoir of a loving household and snapshot of the fostering system in Ireland, from someone at the very heart of it all.
